The Sailing Frenchman

Күн бұрын

More than 2 months I sail around the carribean with no engine. Close quarter manoeuvering, anchoring, docking...etc under sail have become the norm.
Here is the way I do it, by no mean this is the reference or I'm trying to pretend it is the best method, it's just what works for me.

It is different for me, with a two masted junk rig. I raise the foresail about half way up, and the ship then wants to turn downwind, I weigh anchor then run back to the cockpit to steer out of the anchorage. An important consideration that some people might not think about if they haven't lived without an engine, is planning your anchorage and position in the anchorage so that entering and leaving is safe in the prevailing winds. But things can still be tricky if someone anchors downwind of me, especially single handed as I have to get the ship under control in a short space of time after weighing anchor.

Another advantage to having a small boat when single handed sailing. I doubt you would have been able to handle a main sail like that on a bigger boat! And yes, washing your hands. Very important! It doesn't seem that long ago that you were still sailing in the Carribean! I guess you're still in the Phillipines at the moment. I didn't realise the Clipper race was going up that way.

Another great video as always! You appear to have your anchor connector on the wrong way around. I have a similar one fitted to my anchor (osculati I think is the brand) they have that funny shape for a good reason; If you swap it so that the swivel is on the chain end, then it will flip over the right way up as it comes up over the bow roller, so no need for leaning out over the bow! Hope you're well! Fair winds and greetings from the UK 👍

as an aside, could a drone in follow me mode make pathfinding shallows easier, Ive asked others too in addition: If the drone was teathered to the top of the mast with a power feed (the same height as mast). Duration and recovery are sorted, Set drone proximity and use realtime footage to give another set of eyes. Using off the shelf drone with a fly lead connection. Some fishing line and a spare masthead pulley. Could it be of use? cons: another flapping halyard to contend with. another wifi device, I'll forward other channels replies soon. J
