This lesson just popped up on my cell phone. Thanks for posting and sharing. Though I write a lot of music, I’m not an improviser though I’d like to be one. I’ve recently been looking into arpeggios and benefited from your suggestions.

How do manage to mute those strings when you sweep?
@PaulHofreiter
@PaulHofreiter 3 жыл бұрын
Personally I use the thumb part of my palm because it sticks out quite a bit. This part of my palm is usually lightly touching the strings to reduce feedback anyway (not needed in the living room but still something that is muscle memory from louder playing). This part of the palm is usually naturally one or two strings behind whichever string the pick is on so it naturally muted as I go. However this isn’t needed because you can deaden strings as you sweep purely from slightly letting the pressure off of each string after you play it. So for example if you were sweeping a minor triad from string 4, the fingering being 3 1 1 1 with one not on each string, rather than leave the pressure down as I sweep I would life the pressure off of each string as I go, or add pressure if it were an upward sweep (notes descending, arm moving upward). This is easiest to start practicing with a maj7 arpeggio from string 4, fingered 4 3 2 1 with one finger on each string because there aren’t any barres to worry about and you can focus on the pressure of each string as you go individually.

What about up-sweeping? I find that much harder, perhaps due to how I hold the pick.
@PaulHofreiter

Sweeping upwards is harder in execution but essentially the reverse of sweeping down without the benefit of gravity helping (and actively working against you sweeping upward). Any pick angle sweeping down would be reverse for upward sweeps, any arm or wrist movements etc. - a mirror or device recording can help so that (if your downward sweep is ok) you can mimic the downward sweep while going up with all of these things just reversed. It will take some adjustment and getting used to it eventually with focus both will feel equally natural.
