Interesting comments about GMP in the 90's. My late father was a PC in Cheshire but was moved across to GMP when it was formed in 1974. We lived in a Police house, which we subsequently purchased as GMP didn't want it. He used to regail me with stories of how summary 'justice' was served long before the 'suspect' was brought into custody. The excuses used by officers appear to range from 'These are career bad 'uns who understand one thing only' to 'The Criminal Justice System is a waste of time and all they will learn in Prison is to be better criminals'. He alleged that the Police had a good relationship with medical staff at the hospital who would patch up the 'suspect' without enquiring too deeply how they became injured. Again he alleged this was because medical staff were often threatened and a call from them would cause officers to arrive very quickly, even if they were on a meal break! Of course this might not be true and that the medical staff would report any unexplained injuries to their colleagues for investigation. Of course I cannot validate any of this and it might all be lies and that the officers treated suspect with respect and followed the process to the letter. He did go onto to get involved in training, firstly at Bruch near Warrington, then at Peterloo House before the GMP Training school moved to Sedgley Park. He then went on to work on training nationally at Pannal Ash near Harrogate before returning to frontline duties ending his career as an Inspector in Moss Side. His views on ensuring Justice occurred never changed but according to conversations I had with him in later life he did work hard to ensure the practices of the past were amended. I hope in some way he help create the better GMP. and perhaps influence training at a national level. He did say that during the miners strike, if he thought GMP was a bad force then SYP was on another level. Again I cannot corroborate these opinions and South Yorkshire Police may have always been a fine upstanding organisation which was well led. Dad was a senior officer when the Hillsborough match was replayed, I think at Old Trafford. He had ZERO interest in football and was 100% focused on helping police the event and ensure everyone stayed safe.
