Looks like a great job there never an easy task . Couple of small tips i could pass on from my experience of industrial ship painting . If your using the Dft comb to check the thickness dont scrape it along the wet paint just gently place it in the wet surface till it touches the substrate . Secondly using rollers are great for courage and finish but its so easy to end up with a thin coat , brush application will give far better wetting and film thickness of coating . Im sure RR is looking great with her new clean bottom best regards and keep the videos coming ........ Ps finally an additional coat on the leading edges of the rudder fins bow and where transoms meets the side shell will help protect any edge paint thickness loss as corners are always difficult to get adhesion and thickness on
@garymckeown8105 жыл бұрын
Some good points just to add if correct estimation of required coating is achieved and at least random WFT checks carried out per coat in line with the product data sheet then you shouldn’t go wrong. As you will know a roller will give a more even coating if after first coat if you have over half of the material left then you applied the first coat too thinly . Apply a thicker 2 nd coat until all the paint is used. Making an allowance of a stripe coat and appropriate losses and not forgetting leading edges as suggested. From my experience of both standard anti fouls such as micron extra vs Coppercoat the the latter comes out on top in terms of performance and economy by a long shot. I’m sure there will be people who disagree. All the best shipmate.
@PSMarinecoatings5 жыл бұрын
Hi dean You’re right at all points in my opinion, however roller goes faster but you may rol a extra coat antifouling. Also the most red/brown color versons are better.

Trust Terysa to do the fashion statement at the end and have an outfit that matches the anti foul :-))

Nick, there is a third option for bottom paint...silicone products. Hemple´s product is called SilicOne but there are others out there. The concept is simple....it makes your bottom so slick, any growth that attaches while the boat is stationary falls off once it moves through the water. Barnacles and other growth simply cannot attach firmly enough to stay. Bonus points...adds about .5 kt in hull speed and is 100% non-toxic. I put it on my 17m sailboat last spring, while in the UK, then sailed to Spain and had her hauled. After 6 months in the water, 2 in an English estuary heavy with growth, the bottom was totally free of growth except for a few spots where paint wasn´t applied (top of the rudder). Like copper coat, it also lasts about 10 years. Though the yard charged me about 20% more than a conventional anti-fouling job, I feel it was well worth the money. I know it´s too late for you this year, but think about it for next time. If you go with it, I think you´ll be happy.

Nice work. Always surprised me how many new to boating people hire out this task. It is one of the easiest and hard to mess up. And I’m not saying that to provoke the trolls. It is an easy job you can learn just by watching KZbin. Nick. We will be in your area next summer. Any yards from France to Gibraltar that you would recommend and are Catamaran friendly? Obviously need them to allow the owner to do his own bottom paint. For those that don’t know. Not all yards let the owner do there own bottom or repairs. But these yards tend to have no cruisers and just mega yachts or charter boats.
@sailingrubyrose5 жыл бұрын
So far my friend, we haven’t found a yard that wouldn’t let us do our own work. I think that is normally the remit of the UK. In all fairness, we love Lagos in Portugal. Would happily winter there, although I’m not sure they do a cat lift out. But Portimao may.

I have used copper coat - I put five coats of epoxy and then five coats of copper coat - took an afternoon to apply this a was 10 years ago and still going strong. Whoever you have been talking to about copper coat may have not been that accurate in their advice ... best wishes
@MrJudgementday995 жыл бұрын
Darrel Walters yes we put on copper coat 5 years ago we live in the UAE and normal anti foul will last 1 year. We diver down with a soft cloth once a month to keep it activated, it takes 10 minutes for a 60 footer and there hasn’t been a bean in her. Copper coat was expensive but only 3 times more than normal. I suspect for a lifting keel it would be perfect because it is so solid, it is bullet proof. For us it was worth the investment
@rjtumble5 жыл бұрын
Cheers from Georgia, US. Do you find, after you've been back in the water for a while, that those spots where the boat was supported get more noticeable growth than the other areas? I don't imagine it makes much difference, just curious if you see rectangular spots that grow a little more than other areas.
@sailingrubyrose5 жыл бұрын
They will wear out earlier as they only get a single coat of antifoul. It is slapped on, but none the less it’s still only a single coat.

Nick, do you do the bottom work yourself to reduce the cost of labor of having the marina staff do it or is it because you prefer to do the hands-on work yourself so that it meets your standards? Are there any boat projects that you just won't tackle and leave to the marina staff to handle?
@sailingrubyrose5 жыл бұрын
Hey Natalie, I’ve always done the jobs myself where I could. Part of the reason is that antifouling and the preparation makes you really examine your hull and fittings. It’s good practice. The other reason is to do with quality and the value for money you get from contractors. As we travel the world, the only guarantee about quality of workmanship is if I do it myself. Hope this helps

Another tip for bottom work. When painting the bottom with ablative paints you always apply your first coat with a hard non ablative bottom paint with a bright color. The first coat with the bright color acts as a signal to you that your paint “ Ablative “ has worn out and it’s time to recoat. After this first signal coat is applied then you apply two coats of you ablative paint. As for the bronze hardware under the water, just painting it with a bottom paint is counterproductive. You need to apply a few coats of epoxy primer before applying the bottom paint. The epoxy acts as an insulator for the bottom paint and allows the paint to work at its full potential. As for the type of bottom paint to use on the bronze hardware especially the propeller, you can’t use ablative you need to use a hard high copper paint like “Pettit Trinidad” I hope this helped some people out. Do your research on the type of paints that will work for the areas that you are sailing in, much like Nick said. I personal would stay away from ablative type paints because of how the work and how toxic they are. These type of paints cannot be good for the environment.
