The application of a Robert Jones Bandage on the hindlimb of a Golden Retriever is demonstrated in this video. Dr. Sylvestre then explains why she does not use this bandage and what she prefers to use in its place.

Thanks for the video and explanation. I know nothing about vetinary medicine but was able to use your video to apply a temporary Robert Jones bandage to my dog's front leg. He injured his leg and the bandage from the vet slipped off a few hours before his vet appointment. One question, what are the stirrups for, are they just to try to stop the bandage from slipping off?

Thank you for your comment. A Robert Jones bandage is not the easiest one to apply! Impressive. The stirrups are meant to ensure that the bandage does not completely prevent the owner from seeing the 2 toes that should be visible and that allow you to monitor the comfort and appropriateness of the bandage. The purpose of a Robert Jones bandage is to immobilize a fracture, so if the stirrups are actually holding the bandage on the leg then it is probably not fulfilling its function very well... I hope your dog is healing well!

My dog has broken ankle and was treated at emergency vet for shock etc. And i cant afford surgeries so what is best for me to do to help save his leg and let this ankle heal to best of its abilities ? PLEASE HELP...

Hi Caryz919. That is a very tough situation. Without having seen how bad (or not bad) the break is it is hard to give out any information. With a fractured joint (ankle or other) surgery is always the best option and can carry a very good prognosis (again depends on how bad/not bad the fracture is). But if surgery is absolutely not an option then I think the most important thing is to make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible. For that he will need pain medication and to have the leg immobilized (splinted bandage). Be aware that bandages need to be changed regularly and can/will cause problems if they are not. It can take about 2 months for a fracture to heal (maybe a bit less or a bit more depending on age of patient and the fracture itself). So the bandage changes will also cost money. I really can advise not having seen the x-ray or the patient but sometimes amputation is the better alternative as it can be less expensive and carry fewer complications but I think the best way to find out is to at least get information from a specialist, a veterinary surgeon. It will be well worth the consultation fee. Best of luck with your dog and I am so sorry that you and he are dealing with this situation.

@@focusandflourish5168 I have ordered the plastic rear leg quick splint & I hope that will be enough to atleast allow to grow back as natural as possible, I've also thought of the Upet full rear leg brace ...
@focusandflourish5168Ай бұрын
Ok. The full leg brace is not necessary, the brace should go to just below the knee. Watch my video on bandage follow-up and bandage errors so that you know what to look for if there is an issue. Speak with your vet also so she/he can help you with this good lick
