On first use and subsequent uses...pull back on the plunger to get it loosened up. The compound will be easier to expel from the syringe.

EXACTLY! Just pull back a hair to get it unstuck, and no more splats. The rubber seal will stick to the wall if it sits in one spot for long.

Sorry for the delayed response, youtube notifications don't always work. I use 3 and 1 micron almost exclusively. You can use one, or the other, or both, as a progression depending on what stones you coming from. Hope this helps 6 months later! Sorry about that!

What’s the best way to remove diamond compound and clean and maintain your strop ? I applied 3000 grit diamon compound on my kangaroo leather strop, , stroped two knives and its already turning very black. ( slight noob here obvi lol )

I would like to know this as well. I heard some black is good, on the smooth side of the leather it almost gets a sticky feel once some friction and heat is created after a few minutes working the knife over it. How much I'm unsure, but I have yet to clean mine and it seems to still perform just fine.

I've stayed away from diamond loaded strop pastes because it's very difficult to clean them off the blade without causing unsightly scratches. One time after stropping a Wusthof chef knife with diamond paste, I washed the blade with soap and water. The blade looked very clean, but when I proceeded to wipe the blade dry with a clean paper towel, the numerous invisible diamond particles still left over on the blade marred the brushed stainless steel finish. Ever since that episode, I stopped using diamond pastes.
@knifepointgear5851
@knifepointgear5851 2 жыл бұрын
Not all pastes are equal by any means. Some are water based, some are oil, and have WAY more diamond in them meaning you meed less, etc. If you have residual paste on the blade you applied WAY too much. If applied correctly it remains on the strop. Very little is needed due to the diamond content of our paste.

I just got my knifepointgear strop delivered to my doorstep today! Looking forward to learn to properly strop/fine tune my blades, I have a few D2 knives and one Kershaw with 20CV blade, all my knifes are scary sharp already, however, I know they are not shaving sharp. First thing I need to do is Apex to 17⁰ then I will attempt to strop to mirror edge. Question is should I practice on my cheap knives first before attempting to polish my more expensive blades?(cheap knifes are Kershaw and Gerber with Japanese/Chinese/Skandi steel) Thanks Alex for your videos and your stropping gear. Happy 2022

First, thanks for the support! I really appreciate it! Im not sure I understand the question...The thing to remember is, some steel and heat treatments will respond differently to sharpening/ stropping. Some "cheap" steel a bad heat treatment can make a knife super difficult to sharpen or even impossible it get super sharp. Even good tool steel like d2 with a bad heat treatment can make it difficult to really get that hair whittling edge. I wouldn't look at it as what to do first but try and figure out what ones are going to take a better edge and go from there. Hope this helps! Again thanks for the support 🙏🙂

i like the 3 and 1 micron. it depends on what stone your finishing with though. 1 micron is a good all around compound.

I know its an older video but, any tips on rehydrating diamond compound? I bought a pack of various grits a couple years ago, went back to use some on a new strop and its tough to get out and has a crumbly rough texture that doesn't adhere at all to the leather on the strop it just flakes off. Thanks
@knifepointgear5851
@knifepointgear5851 4 жыл бұрын
different compound uses different bases. some are oil and some are water. it would depend on what the base is. Ours are oil but the best way it to just scrape off the old with a razor and apply new. The base helps hold the diamond on the surface of the strop so if it flakes off so will the diamond. Applying a VERY small amount is recommended and you wont get any flaking if you apply in the correct amount. Basically the excess is whats flaking off in the first place. hope this helps🙂

@tbrew8222
@tbrew8222 4 жыл бұрын
considering that it evaporated, it is likely water based. However, Put a small bit in a clean shotglass, water bottle cap or whatever (clean is what matters) and add some water and let it sit a few hours. If you see beads of oil separating (check in sunlight if you can, full spectrum helps show oilslicks) it may be oil based that somehow dried.

@OUTDOORS55

It will last a while. As you use it it will remove steel and will load up the strop. When you notice decreased performance scrape off the old and reapply. Apply the compound as thin as possible. Less is more🙂

Idk about knife sharpening compounds, but for plain leather strops (just to correct/polish a razor edge before/during use), it's reccommended to use some kind of animal fat every few months- a year to keep the leather from drying and cracking. Can't imagine it would hurt for the wood backed ones too I'd presume a similar
