How do you choose what size μm compound to use? Can you do a video with the pro's and cons of each? I see you suggest 1μm, but is there a reason? For someone who is very much an amateur and doesn't need bleeding edge sharpness, would something larger be better? Thanks.
@connormunson54488 ай бұрын
I know hearing "it depends" is a lame answer but I'll try to provide more context. The smaller the micron, the smoother your edge is going to be and the sharper it will be but cutting performance is always a trade off. The smoother the edge, the more suited your knife will be for push cuts because it is sharper but it will be less good at draw cutting because there is less aggression to the edge. Think about using a serrated knife on a tomato. It is able to cut through the hard skin even if it's not very sharp at all. Sharper, finer edges are also less durable. I would recommend a 3 micron generally as it's freakishly sharp and still leaves a bit of bite to the edge.
@UnCoolDad8 ай бұрын
@@connormunson5448 thanks for the reply. Yes, I was thinking 3 or 4 - I don't need a bleeding edge - just a serviceable one that cuts quickly and efficiently.

Hi, thanks for you video. I would like to buy and try this new emulsion. I have a doubt: is it correct, after using a stone, going with 4um then 1um and then 0,25um? Is it strong enough for super steels like Elmax and Cpm-3v? 🙏
@jeffhicks8428 Жыл бұрын
1. Diamonds abrade everything, including other diamonds. 2. You don't need that many abrasives for whatever it is you're trying to do. Fix your learning disability. Going from a broken, chipped knife, to repaired, razor sharp and with a mirror edge requires how many abrasives? Three. If you think you need 15 stones to sharpen a knife, then you have a learning disability. WTF do you even need a quarter of a micron diamond powder for? Certainty nothing related to a knife. Even for a straight razor it's questionable if that fine of an abrasive has utility. 3. Just buy a small little tube of industrial diamond powder or already mixed into a compound for about 300x less than these idiotic retail items targeted at knife bro idiots. You're getting like 10 cents of diamond powder for $30. It blows my mind how dumb knife bros are. You can literally order this stuff anywhere, right off Amazon, for like $10 or less for enough to last an average knife bro a lifetime. 4. If you insist on getting 3 grits for your diamond powder for sharpening knives, I suggest You get something like 10 um, 5 um and 2 um.
@stroppystuff641 Жыл бұрын
Hey! sorry for the late reply. I'd suggest just using 1um. You don't need a handful of compounds and yes it's diamond so it will work perfectly on all steels :)

How often do you recommend we load our strop with this compound? Every time we sharpen? Also how many sprays for an average strop when loading?
@stroppystuff64110 ай бұрын
2-4 sprays for a 200 mm x 50mm area is plenty. I would reload when the polishing gets slow or when the strop loads with swarf and turns gray/black

Just ordered some. Do you use leather conditioner before? Also, do you sand the basswood? Gunny recommended sanding to 800.
@stroppystuff6412 жыл бұрын
I don't condition my leather first, 800 is a nice finish on basswood but make sure you break in your paper first, when it's fresh it loses grit quickly and you don't want it stuck into the basswood.
@dandildarious48492 жыл бұрын
@@stroppystuff641 Okay thanks, I always vacuumed the basswood. Hoping gritomatic doesn't cancel this order, like they do for venev products!
@stroppystuff6412 жыл бұрын
@@dandildarious4849 vacuum is a good idea but certainly try and avoid depositing grit in the first place, the fibers hold onto grit quite well. Good luck and I hope you like the compound!

I go back and forth on which I prefer. I get nicer edges off basswood but it's more punishing, it's easy to make a mistake and when you do it will mess up your apex pretty fast! I suggest trying loads of substrates and figuring out which you prefer but basswood is great.

@@JTZIII Hey! I'll have to make a video on this but no, you'll need to strop at the exact same angle, if you go at an increased angle you'll end up rounding the edge or putting a micro bevel on it. It takes a lot of practice but in my opinion is much better than leather. I'll do a video on it
