Getting a DRIVING LICENSE IN GERMANY is one of the most difficult bureaucratic hurdles that you will go through if you consider making Germany your home. It is not only very expensive, but time consuming and challenging if you do not prepare right from Day 1.
In this video, I have shared my experience and tried to give a Detailed STEP BY STEP guide to getting a DRIVING LICENSE IN GERMANY if you already have a drivers license back in your home country.
Right from securing an appointment at the Fuhrerscheinbüro to register for driving license conversion, to walking out from it with the actual license, I have covered all the know hows and how you SAVE MORE THAN €100 easily. I got mine after 6 months and spending around €1000.

If you are from Australia, NZ, Canada, USA, Japan, Israel & South Korea,
Documents you need to apply for Driving License conversion:
1. Passport
3. Residence Permit
4. Original & Copy of your Native Driver's License
5. First registration in Germany, i.e. Meldebescheinigung
6. Biometric Photo.
If you are from a country other than the ones listed above,
Documents you need to apply for Driving License conversion:
1. ID Card
2. Passport
3. Residence Permit
4. Original & Copy of your Native Driver's License
5. Confirmation of registration at a fahrschüle, i.e. driving school
6. First Aid Course Certificate
7. Eye test certificate
8. First registration in Germany, i.e. Meldebescheinigung
9. Biometric Photo.
Steps you need to master for Practical Test:
1. Reverse Parallel Park
2. Perpendicular park in between 2 cars
3. Driving on Autobahns
4. Driving in City Conditions maintaining speed limits, wherever applicable
5. Driving in residential areas keeping in mind of Rechts Vor Links, i.e. Right Before Left rule
6. Emergency Brakes
7. Shoulder checks to check blind spots

Those coming from California. No school, no written test needed. Apparently new regulations directly transfer the license to a german one. This may apply to other states as well.

Yes, there is no link between the app and the driving school. You can prepare whenever you want. But you can't give the theory test without enrolling in a driving school.

I have US license , can this be transferred or do I have to take the test . Like in Canada US license is accepted and transferred and no test is required. Read somewhere that even Germany has such options

US license can be transferred without the need for any Tests.

1. You can also ride motorcycles with a regular German driving licence for cars (class B), given that you're at least 25 years old, have had your driving licence for at least 5 years. 2. Yes, you drive all over Europe

You need International driving licence to be able to drive in India, i.e. If you don't get back your Indian DL along with your German DL. I got mine back. A few others did not.

Theory test is available in multiple languages! Theory lessons are only available in german! If you understand German 70%, i would recommend you take it in German!

Cheap rentals will not be possible in the M zone in Munich. I would look towards Ismaning, Unterföhring, Haar etc. As a new expat, initially I would recommend WG options. You share an apartment and divide the cost.

Depends on how many practical classes you take. If you convert your native DL to german DL, and pass theory and practical in 1 attempt and not take more than 2 - 4 practical classes, you can do it in and around 1200. This amount can vary 10-20% depending on the place as well since the registration cost and fahrschule costs vary depending on the city.
