How to apply gelcoat * UPDATED VIDEO * -Part two-

With the success of my original how to apply gelcoat video, I still get asked "How do you roll and tip gelcoat" You asked for it so here it is! In the original video I showed you how to apply gelcoat with a roller and brush to cure some polyester resin. This video focuses on a finish gelcoat application that you can use to get your boat looking brand new.
In the video I cover rolling and tipping. I show you how to roll gelcoat onto your sub straight and to tip it smooth. Just like in the how to spray gelcoat video you need to get some thickness before you can get that mirror finish. Applying one or two layers of Gelcoat Without Wax, and then finishing with a layer of gelcoat with wax, you will be able to sand and buff to a mirror finish.
Remember to mix small batches and overlap as you proceed. Use the minimal MEKP you can so you have a longer working time!! You can always come back the next day and apply more

Well said on the non wax primary coats of gel coat topped off with the gel coat with wax. I purchased TotalBoat gel cost without wax and thought I had made a mistake (corrected by purchasing wax addititive for the final coat). Novice - getting there. I did manage to use the TB wax remover on the very first step. Thank you for the tight information.

Thank you for the presentation. I am part way through a plywood boat build and starting to react to epoxy (despite taking all possible precautions). I still need to use epoxy as a adhesive, so my question is can I fibreglass a hull with polyester and mat over places where epoxy fillets are used (between keel and hull), will the polyester bond to epoxy and plywood sufficiently?.

The polyester will not bond with the epoxy. Why not use polyester fillets?

You can use Vinylester as an interface. Apply a coat of Vinylester over the epoxy. After it cures, you can carry on with a polyester.

I have a question, if I where to roll on Gelcoat for exterior fix, should just roll multiple layers as they dry without sanding between coats then just sand or should I sand lightly between coats?

Yes you can, if you do several layers with laminating gelcoat; then a final coat with gelcoat that contains wax. You cannot sand gelcoat without wax.

Can this process be used on the deck of a boat? I'm not terribly concerned about finish as i will be using some sort of "Sea Deck" to cover after soft spot repairs. And also?..Do you have any deck repair videos you'd recommend..Thanks

You could use this method and gelcoat for the deck, but paint would be much easier in the long run. Soft sand is a great product and can be used with gelcoat or paint, however it world better with paint. Ive seen a few deck repair videos but nothing id recommend to you. id be happy to talk you through it if you'd like.

Made the mistake of getting gelcoat WITH wax, I need a few layers on the engine room I’m coating. How can I dewax it now to prep it for the next few layers of unwaxed gel coat? Thanks man! Love the videos!

Just sand with 100 grit and you’ll be good to go. Make sure you run some acetone over the gel after you sand it.

Try tipping with an golden Royal & Langnickel Taklon brush, MUCH cheaper. than Badger hair, and you can just throw it away when done.

Is there anyway I can build up using with wax gelcoat? I have an area that's literally 1" x 4" that I'm repairing, and I'd prefer not to buy both when I'm only going to use about 5% of it. Or should I just take the hit and buy both? Thanks.

You can but you need to sand between coats.

@@bdeana2961 No, you can not! I used gel coat (without wax or in my case paraffin) for the first layers and top coat (with wax or in my case paraffin) for the last layer. Also, looking back at my project, I do recommend 3 layers of rolled gel coat and one layer of top coat - so in total for layers. I only did three layers in total and sanded through some spots ...
