This is a perfect video because you never quite know just what you might come across with any project. That said, the hull was in decent shape, I wonder why someone would even bother painting it in the first place, let alone using latex? I was expecting to see some hidden damage. Sheesh! I subbed right away. I know this is a bit of an older video, but I'd still like to offer condolences to your family. Love the baby hand print tattoo on your palm, that's cool.

I'm stripping bottom paint off with qua thinner. Could i use the on and off hull cleaner to get rid of any paint stain residue on the hull?
@HoldFastMarine Жыл бұрын
You could try it. But on off isn’t good at removing paint.

Great information AND very entertaining, infotaining. Our 2004 Kawasaki Jetski 1200 STX-R we’ve had since 2008 is getting a new gelcoat application. Sanding the 3rd layer gelcoat (with wax) revealed some thin spots that need a correction. Is it safe to re-coat spots after sanding and before compounding? Also, this ski started taking on water via the driveshaft opening boot in the hull, ouch. This boot appears to be factory mounted to the hull with some type of epoxy paste that failed. The service manual says nothing about how to reattach this boot. Any ideas?
@HoldFastMarine2 жыл бұрын
It’s tough to do “spots” and have it all be level and pretty. It’s better to recoat the whole thing. As far as the boot, I have no idea. I avoid Jetskis like the plague 😂

I did paint them, and I’m sorry but I didn’t film any of it.

You may want to try using a "Heated Power Washer" instead of the Xylene. Way better, faster and cheaper!

That’s good but it dosent take paint off lol

@@HoldFastMarine it takes Latex off. I stripped waterproofer from a 2-story office building last year and I can guarantee that 200°F water at 3500psi will definitely strip it. ;-)

Thanks for the video. One other option buy, beg, borrow or otherwise acquire a Gelcoat peeler, it should clear all the crap with minimal cleanup. The only downside is the price.

Yup, also called a marine shaver lol. Thankfully I don’t have to remove the gelcoat on these boats! What’s job that would be!!

Hi, just found your channel and love it. Curious as to why you said you don’t like using chemical stripper on the hull. I have a 31’ center console which I’ve put a few coats of ablative without a barrier coat on the hull bottom so I could wet slip it with the plan to eventually strip it all down to lift store the boat. What do recommend to use to remove the ablative paint. Is the total boat strip capable of doing it without harming the hull
@HoldFastMarine Жыл бұрын
The total boat stripper will work, and I’ve used it for that exact purpose. It will not remove the gelcoat underneath. However it’s a huge pain in the butt. And it’s extremely messy. The best way is to hire a company to come media blast the hull. Make sure they are qualified and use the proper medium, which is usually a soda medium. This could remove the gelcoat, or damage it. I personally would rather repair or re gelcoat the hull just to avoid the paint stripper.
@doug2202 Жыл бұрын
@@HoldFastMarine Thank you for the reply. Would re gel coating still require me to completely stripping the ablative.

Yes. It would.

Sorry for you loss man. Hey I got a jet boat I was thinking about painting with a 2k automotive paint and a spray gun. But after watching your videos Im not sure. What do you think? Just re gel it?
@HoldFastMarine2 жыл бұрын
Good morning and merry Christmas! I always avoid automotive paint for anything marine. You could spray a marine paint there are dozens of two part paints on the market. I would recommend awlcraft for your jetski.

Well at least you had the door open. Wearing a mask with carbon filters is a pain and you sweat! You can get away with it for now but each time it adds a little to your lungs so IF you make it to your 40’s you may be wearing an oxygen mask. I’m 78 and have had tinnitus for 40 years bc real men don’t wear ear plugs when shooting or running loud equipment!
