Some things to note about POR15: -It's a very finicky coating. It will only stick to either completely rusted steel (as in absolutely no paint and no bare steel), or completely sandblasted steel. It sticks incredibly well to those two surfaces, and will peel off of anything else. -You need to topcoat anything that will see sunlight (using an etch primer on the bare POR15 first). It will fade and break down in any UV light. I reccomend either POR's topcoat or SEM Trim Black for that. Cover your skin completely, and wear nothing you like. When it sticks to your skin, even Acetone won't take it off, so you're stuck with any spatter on your arms for a few months. -When storing the can, put a piece of plastic sheet (like a ziploc bag or grocery bag) sandwiched between the can and lid. Otherwise you'll be cutting the lid off because of the liquid that pools in the seam and acts like a glue.

Great info! Question: will it adhere to VERY roughed up existing paint? I have a 60 gallon fuel tank with areas of rust, perfectly bare metal, and paint that is still adhering good enough to not come off with a grinder and wire wheel at 12500 rpms. It is very roughed up though! So I'm hoping it will provide good adhesion?
@howabouthetruth2157 Жыл бұрын
POR 15 does NOT "stay stuck on your skin for a few months". A few days at the most, because your skin emits perspiration, plus skin cells are always dying off & being replaced by new skin cells continuously from within. Ask me how I know.........yes.......I got POR 15 on my arms in a few places.......and like I said, after a few days, it was all gone.

I’m no expert on the science...but, I drove and maintained, 40,000 pound lifeboats in the Coast Guard. We kept our boats standing by in saltwater. So, I have a shit ton of experience maintaining running gear. First....good job! Most people don’t bother to care. Second, you should consider brushing to cut in where you can’t get above with a gun, and pushing that product thinned with por-15 thinner at 5%. Spraying is so very much the best way. A cheap Husky gravity fed HVLP gun from HD does well. Cleaning is not pretty, I only use guns I’ve worn out shooting epoxy. Trust me, it’ll never be pretty again. But, the results... The springs, bushings, etc. with surface rust are simply saying they are grade 8 steel. That’s vital for strength, but very prone to oxidation. Hit those with a product called Ospho. It’s a surface rust converter. WD40 makes a silicone water resistant lubricant that’s a great product for shock boots, and CVS joints, fuel plumbing, etc. Love it...it last

Apply an oil based undercoating over the POR 15. NH Oil undercoating is a fabulous product.
@garymorris58443 жыл бұрын
@@JohnPonce I am new to the product, but have all the confidence in it. I have a 2008 Ford F350 Super Duty truck that I bought used last year. Lots of rust throughout the underside. I had a shop replace the bed cross members that were rusted through. They then cleaned out the rust and applied SEM to protect it. It does the same thing as POR 15. I have another shop doing the front end underneath to replace parts, clean it out, and then they are going to apply POR 15 underneath. This same shop will then spray NH Oil throughout the entire underside of the truck. The POR 15 or SEM will react with the rust and seal it, but the NH Oil undercoating provides that oil based product that will seal it from water and oxygen. It is better than rubberized or asphalt based undercoating. It doesn't drip. Apply it once a year before the winter. I believe this is the best way to protect the underside, just as you did by using POR 15 or a similar product, but then apply an oil based undercoating like NH Oil.

So where he made a BIG MISTAKE is after the first coat he let it cure until the next day and didn’t scuff it (320 grit) before doing the second coat. You need to do the 2nd coat when it is still tacky or if you let it cure, scuff, clean, then apply the second coat. His second coat WILL delaminate. When it does he can scuff the base coat and do it again.

@nickolaspickard26202 жыл бұрын
Im looking to do this on my FJ Cruiser. My concern is that between powerwashing off the degreaser and metal prep, you are introducing moisture bak into the rusted parts. Therefore, using the POR 15 will only seal in the moisture, which will only lead the rust deaper into the metal. Is this thinking accurate? Will the POR 15 displace moisture enough to seal the rusing once and for good? Also, When using this on bare metal and or paint, the metal prep should be enough for the product to stick, correct? Awsome vid btw, im seeing alot of pepole complain that POR-15 doesnt work, but in reality they are not going through the necessary steps.
@JohnPonce2 жыл бұрын
Im not entirely sure about the thinking I honestly followed what the directions recommended me to do. But yes with bare metal should be fine with just metal prep. I’ve had issues with it flaking or peeling off of bare metal before but that’s because I didn’t properly clean it and metal etched it well. POR15 adheres really well with surface rust when your using it on bare metal it needs to be etched for it to adhere onto well I think it would be better if it was scuffed and metal etched but that’s majority of the flaking or peeling I’ve seen was on the bare metal surfaces I did have some on some surface rusted areas as well, but again I didn’t properly knock out all of the loose rust first and over a year it starts to show signs of the areas that weren’t properly prepped. What I will say is that if your vehicle rust is at a point where it’s eating itself inside out, there’s no cure either than cutting and replacing the metal. I’ve had a spot on my frame rail where everything held up POR15 wise but over a year time I’m getting holes on the frame rail even with the paint still intact. POR15 isn’t a cure it’s more of preventing measure than anything to slow the process of it from spreading or prevent it from happening if your using it on bare metal. So with my case the rust was eating itself inside out on the frame rail and there’s nothing I can do either than replacing the metal at that point

Great video! In hindsight, would you have gone with an aerosol rust converter?
@supersportimpalass3 жыл бұрын
Most important part is getting the scaled rust off first. A hammer works great or a cheap Harbor Freight needle scaler if you have an air compressor. Then spray with Rustoleum Krud Kutter rust converter before you apply paint. POR 15 works well when the surface is prepared correctly but should be top coated as it's not UV resistant.

if you open the can take a nail and make holes all around the rim of lid so the paint can drain so you can seal and use again...

@randyeging9713 Жыл бұрын
Just spray Fluid Film black once a year…. 30 mins, zero prep and no disassembly. Plus, FF creeps into seams and joints

I expect sadly that the rust will continue under the POR15 and create a bigger mess. You must treat the rust first with wire brush, sander and Phosphoric acid to get rid of it. There are other videos posted showing a completely rusted frame underneath the POR15 because the cleaning and treatment was not performed.

Wait, I thought you only were supposed to wait 2-4 hours between each coat? Would two people have made it go much faster of would you have been in each other's way? What about POR 15 spray in wide areas and sponge brush in tight areas?

You're right. Supposed to put 2nd. coat and/ or topcoat on as soon as 1st. has finger drag. Hope his 2nd coat doesn't peel.

Did any drip on your driveway?
@JohnPonce2 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly I did not! I was super careful about that I’m not so sure if the video shows it or not, but I did lay down towels I didn’t care about to pick up any paint when applying or just from it settling that could have potentially dripped.

@@AmbientMelancholy I got a replacement rocker panel from lmc truck I was going to cut to fit but my buddy that welded it on recommended we make it like a slip on so we cut it a little bit over to save us hours from having to cut it to the exact fit. I had recorded everything and was going to make a video on it but unfortunately that was one of the videos that got accidentally deleted when I switched from pc to mac
