Thanks for the tip about not mixing products. I did that today using a Varathane pre-stain conditioner and a Minwax stain. It came out more blotchy than if I hadn't used a conditioner at all!

I'll buy a poly stain mix but I wouldn't try too mix them on my own

Home Depot only sells the Varathane pre-stain wood conditioner, of course they place it on the shelf right next to the Minwax wood finisher.😅🤣😂

As long as you stick with oil-based conditioner for oil-based stain, and water-with-water, brand plays very little into the effectiveness of said wood conditioner. You probably used a water based conditioner with an oil based stain. Read your labels beyond the brand name!

Thanks for the great video! do you recommend raising the grain with damp cloth and sand it down before using the water based pre stain and stain?
@BOCraftsman Жыл бұрын
I do not. I’ve never been in the practice of doing that and never had any problems not doing that.

Can says to not let pre-stain dry before wiping off excess(?)

So after Preston wiped off, what if a couple of areas of wool look darker than others?

So then do you go back and put several more coats of stain and if you have a piece of wood a long piece of wood you just do it the whole thing or do you do part of it turn it over then do the other part

Is there a temperature requirement? It’s 40 degrees F in my garage where I’m working. I can find zero information.

I didn't use this on some birch plywood and my minwax poly stain didn't come out even.on first coat. Anything I can do to fix with starting over?
@BOCraftsman11 ай бұрын
You would be best to start over. Trying to get it level now would be very hard .

Looks like you got basically no stain absorption.

Why do some people say wait 10 minutes, others 15-20 minutes, and even others say 45min - 1 hour before wiping back the wood conditioner? Such a large window. I’ve always rubbed it on, waited 5-10, wiped off, stained. Is there any benefit to waiting longer??
@BOCraftsman Жыл бұрын
As long as you don’t wait over 2 hrs (which is the max time stated on the can). Than you would be fine

Do I need prestain on rubber wood ?
@BOCraftsman Жыл бұрын
I’m not entirely curtain however, you could try staining a test piece if you have one or just use the pre stain conditioner regardless. It can’t hurt the wood but only help the stain.

Maple is a “softwood?” When did that happen?
@joed1901Ай бұрын
Soft maple will tend to blotch if you don’t use wood conditioner.
