Nice video! Thank you! Quick question, can you save the mixture? If I mix too much is it okay to put a lid on it and save it for the next project??

I do piano restorations, and I’m always looking for new materials for refinishing the case and case parts. I’ve been using Pre-cat lacquer because it goes on quick and hardens fast. Of course I have to rub out the finish to get a flat smooth patina that gives a closed grain finish. So…..would this work over this kind of finish to give it more luster?

I’ve used quite a lot of Rubio and have no issues except for the cost. Now, if there were no alternatives, then it’s pay the price. But I was very interested in the comparison review undertaken recently by the Wood Whisperer. The final conclusion was that you could get the same finish at a much reduced price by getting Natura Onecoat. Now, Natura Onecoat is not available yet here on the UK but I trust the Wood Whisperer and so will be getting some as soon as it comes here. For you lucky people on the US, I think you can get it now (but I don’t know how widely). If it were me, I would ask your normal supplier to get some.
@EverydayBuilds Жыл бұрын
The cost can be a tough pill to swallow. There are a lot of competitors popping up at lower price points. So hopefully that will make wax/oil finishes more affordable in the future.
@theofarmmanager267 Жыл бұрын
@@EverydayBuilds it does seem that the consumer has been taken advantage of here. If you want a premium brand, then your product must excel above all others. It does seem that the market take up of 2C over 1C is quite low. That surprises me as, for me, the jock curing of 2C allows me to safely move coated timber (essential in a smaller shop) and prevent dust ruining the finish. I would think that there are quite a few innovations yet to come in the HWO market giving us, the consumer, better choice of better product at less cost

If you want to keep the natural color of the white oak, I would recommend Osmo clear or Rubio Pure (this will add an amber hue). Osmo clear will change the appearance the least.

@glacialimpala Жыл бұрын
No no, NO, Pure darkens a ton and gives a lot of warmth! Natural is recommended shade for white oak, but in my experience some other options should be considered. There are several subtle shades, like cotton white, sky grey etc. All shades darken and deposit a bit of pigment at the same time (since Pure is base for ALL shades, so all shades have that darken+yellow effect, which is then topped by accompanying pigment), cotton white has a ton of pigment that is very light beige, like yellowish white so it makes white oak look naked. Sky grey has ever so slight grey pigment that won't make the white oak look grey at all... @@EverydayBuilds

The way I see it, you pick the maintenance oil that matches the base tone of your finish. If your finish has more of an amber tone, go with the pure maintenance oil. If the finish has a lighter white tone, go with the white maintenance oil. And if the finish is dark/black, go with the black. 👍

These types of products are a weak version of the old solution to bond with wood cells for a more natural looking limited protective finish. The old solution is two part epoxy thinned with acetone. The protection increases with the thickness of resin in acetone solution.

I've not used Rubio monocoat, but I've heard that you can't repair it, meaning reapply it, if you've used the maintenance oil. Doing a spot repair won't blend in if you've used the maintenance oil.

I have heard that as well, but I don’t have any personal experience with whether it can be done or not 🤷🏻♂️ Maybe others can chime in.
@jaderene Жыл бұрын
You actually can repair Rubio Monocoat, because it’s an oil finish, you just have to sand the area in need of repair, basically a spit repair, compared to polyurethane finishes, we’re you have to sand the entire surface before re-applying the finish!

Respectfully I disagree with needing plastic syringes. Eyeballing the ratio in a paper-cup is sufficient and saves our planet from more plastic. I’ve applied gallons this way. Rubio is my go to finish! My one trick is coffee stir sticks. Super cheap and work great! Also always water pop before final sanding!
@EverydayBuilds Жыл бұрын
Completely understand. And thanks for the great tip, I’ll have to pick some of those up 👍
@aaronblackford981 Жыл бұрын
I would say, having used it limited, starting with the syringes isn’t horrible idea to limit mess ups. Which will cause less harm caused to the planet in remaking same thing three or four times. Once people get used to it, the change to coffee stirs. Or maybe just popsicle sticks, or maybe chop sticks. They are small, made of extremely renewable wood, and not plastic.
