Interesting video and definitely a topic I've struggled with! I've approached it slightly differently using the Pareto principle. I acknowledge that out of all actionable advice I come across there will be a tiny minority of things that lead to the greatest amount of value for me. I focus on those 5 simple things every day (Reading, Writing, Walking, Exercising, and Meditating).

Thank you, and that's absolutely right. If you get those right, you have a strong pillar for anything else that comes along, small or large.

Good advice, it applies to experimental work also when writing a proposal for example and one needs to read through many references!

Yeah - For any videos I save for learning, I wait until I can sit down, focus, pause after important points, rewind to hear things again, talk through the points myself, etc.

Such a relatable video, and with actionable advice. Your channel has become one of my favourites! Being a reader, I used to go through books but not retain much information, defeating the very purpose of reading. Later I started highlighting sentences and saving them in Google Keep, a fresh note for every book. It had two benefits, firstly because I was writing the highlights down they became more ingrained in my memory, and secondly, I now have them all organised in the same place so its easier to look them up when needed.

Thank you, and that sounds like a solid system. Simple but effective.

I like to watch the video to see if it actually resonates THEN add it to a notes playlist that I occasionally go back to take notes on. This is bc I like the first pass to be engrossed in the video and the second pass I know vaguely where to pay attention more closely.

I think the problem isn't that most people need to incorporate new systems but that they need to use their own system long enough to actually get the benefit out. Hopping on different systems gives the illusion of competence but sticking to one good system, in my opinion, creates flow. Great video as always brother!

Thanks and yes I agree. I figured out it was because the wire was rubbing against the chair -it won't be in the next video.

Hello, I wanted to know how do you access/sift through your Zettelkasten once you are ready to start ‘the work’? A lot of videos on KZbin about creating and organizing the zettelkasten but few (or perhaps none?) on how to actually USE it practically. I have already accrued well over 400 notes and am ready to start, but find it difficult to parse and use the way I think it was intended to be used. Obsidian seems to be better but I want to use both. I have a physical and Obsidian Zettelkasten with the same data. I'm taking the physical notes and laying them out but I feel that somehow I'll miss that 'nugget' of information that may make the project better precisely because it may be in a completely different index. Thanks for the vids. - Joe

That's a great idea and you're right with it getting no attention. In honesty, it's one of my sticking points too. I tend to remember that a relevant note exists for the project, then search for it. The notes linked to it tend to be relevant, so that's mainly what I rely on. Otherwise, I have a flick through the tags and the index to see what's important. Definitely needs a whole video though.

@@odysseas__ I feel better now that you also seem to be having the same issue. I really want to make it work, specially since I'll be attending a monastic retreat in a few weeks and wanted to take it and explore some topics I want to address in my work. But I also think that the indexing is the springboard if you will. Mine is VERY simple; I have five top "fuzzy" categories , each has A-Z sections and the index for each is a general topic. Perhaps looking at exactly how Luhmann or Zertillanges did it themselves. I've been thinking of making a global index of all the topics and then criss cross topics like an idea alchemy of sorts.

The example you used at 3:48 looks very interesting. If you don't mind, what was the source of those notes? I want to learn to be a better listener so this seems very useful to me
