Thanks for the video. It would be beneficial for your audience to know that Davinci Resolve Databases is not the same as Archive Project files, which is the one you are explaining here. Resolve Backup Database, (Disk or PostgreSQL) includes all created project files available in that particular Database. The Archive Project only refers to that particular selected project. You are mentioning Databases indistiguishable of Archive Project. Thanks once again for your contribution to this community.

Thanks for this. So if I understand correctly, the archived .dra file is everything that you need to be able to recall the entire project years later from a backup? So in effect, I could send that .dra archive (plus media folder) to a friend and they'd be able to load up the entire project without any missing files? I ask because I'm currently backing up all of my files and one problem I often encounter when loading up projects years later is that my voiceover files are missing.

Hi there, the DRA file if you send the media with it then yes. A DRA file can also be used like a EDL without media attached - the files will show as offline. If you choose to export media with the project archive then your audio files should be the with the all the other media files. If it is a thing where years later you intend on pulling up old projects I would go as far as EDL, XML, DRA (will all media) and Database archive.

@@cinechimp Thanks for that. I did give it a try but something weird happened. The archived DRA file required about 8 times as much disk space as the original folder that contained my source footage. I'm wondering if that's because my project has some lingering attachments to media files that are no longer part of the actual project I'm trying to archive? I can't think of any other reason the archive space requirements would be 8 times the size of my project materials. If that's the case I'll have to figure out a way to detach any unused media files from this project before I'm able to archive.

Will it only backup the media that was put in the timeline (rather than *all* source files put in the bin)? Suppose you want to come back later and cut in a clip not previously used, would it be present in the archive?

So, if my intent is to transfer the archive to a new system, which may not have access to all the source media, should I render cache or use optimised media? The way you describe it makes it sound like the answer is no, but if I'm mailing my archive on physical media, doing it wrong would be a bit of a delay.

Hey Samuel, If your mailing a physical drive you would be better of archiving the project an EDL or XML and sending out a separate commercial workflow set of proxies of all the used media. If they require the original media, (like Netflix) then provide that instead of the proxies. In other words hedge your bets. But yes the way that I have described it will do what your asking but, never hurts to absolutely make sure. You could also load the project on a separate system before mailing.

@@cinechimp try this yourself. I have my projects and cache on a different drive. 1TB SSD. So its a completely different drive letter. I set this up when I created a new database. If that drive letter changes, there is no way to relink the database. Huge flaw in the software. I actually forgot the drive letter, I had to look at one of my KZbin videos to see what it was to fix it. It was Drive O:. I have many drives in my workstation. Not the normal user. ;)

@@Joeteck I also have my cache on a separate drive, did you select to save the cached material as part of the backup? Sorry its unclear what you can not reconnect. If its the cache media, let resolve recache it. If its the project material are you sure you are importing it correctly or you saved it out correctly. The whole point of backing up the database or the project files is so that you as a power user can have multiple databases to connect projects from and back up too. You should just be able to select a drive, no matter the drive name to load a project or a database from.

Thanks very much for your vid. I'm working on an iMac with 1 TB internal drive. I've been editing my video work on that drive. I'm about to begin using a 2 TB Thunderbolt external SSD. What is the easiest way to get the Davinci Resolve files to the new drive? Some of these are completed projects and some I'm still working on. Some of the media files are also stored on that drive and some are on other external drives (where it's fine they stay). Thank you!

Hi Scott, great question. Most of what you're asking is covered in this video. Just make sure that you back everything up, each project with EDLs /XML which ever you prefer and then archive each actual project and select all the media and cache files. Set your save destination as your new drive. Then export your entire Database to that same drive as a BU. Then when you open resolve reset your saving and cache destinations, to your external drive. This will unlink your media files. So you will need to relink your media files from the new destination. Hit me up if you have any problems at all.

Hey there Epicon, I totally missed your question. The archive is independent from the project so you can delete the project and media files from your system. For safety I would advise that your project archive is on a separate disk.

I get errors on some projects "Failed to archive CsharpLogo.png" (or other media files) however even when pressing on "Relocate", to tell him the folder that contains that file, he still complains he cannot find it.. It seems that archiving images doesn't work at all no matter the file format...?

Would it not be easier to simply export the project to the folder where the original files reside? That backs up the project and allows for later importing back into DR. Then the folder containing all original media and the exported project can be stored on external drives. [ The problem with a database backup is that databases can get corrupted and you lose everything inside of the DB. ]

Hi Marc, Yes you absolutely could do it the way that you are suggesting, but then your media, project and archive would be in the same location on the same drive. This means you only have data one drive or one folder. I would recommend to duplicate the project and media via a project achieve to a separate destination. This can be as you suggest on a external drive for sure. But you should always have a minimum of two copies. And you should always make sure you export an EDL with your project archive which is a totally different thing to a resolve database archive. Then you are covered if you have a minimum two copies in two locations. Hope this helps.

Have you ever archived a project and then when you went to restore you get a pop up that says it does not appear to be a project?! The archive folder has folders for media, but DaVinci says there's nothing there!

No, not as of yet. But that sounds like one you should get help from the resolve team at BMD in your country. They will want a resolve log but they will talk you through what to do. This will help them understand how it has happened and hopefully make a change to whatever causes it.

The system you have built sounds good. It should be way faster than my Macbook Pro! Resolve works best when the cache files are stored on your scratch disk, render files can be set to an external drive like your 3 NVME's if you have them say set to a RAID for optimised playback and speed. The settings are really important and there are many ways to optimise your system, just depends on what you have and how you want to work. Thats one of the main reasons why resolve is so powerful.

I’m currently running into a storage application problem when I’m working on a current project in DR16. It’s showing DR with 60gigs. Is this because I have all my projects still saved on DR. Hi Joel, no probs. It could be a number of things like cached media, proxies etc. But yes the smart thing to do would be to archive off your finished projects and reimport them when needed. Hope this helps

Hi, there is a tricky pitfall (or a bug ?) in Davinci Resolve (free version) when doing archives. When I wanted to create an Archive to transfer to another computer i did like you demonstrated. BUT : I have Sony AVCHD files as footage. Its a container format that hold multiple MTS files about 2.1 G of size. Now i "archived" a large project (42GB) on an external disk. When checking the size the archive was much smaller. Checking the contents showed that only the first 0000.MTS file was stored. The other were missing. Did someone else observed this issue ?

Hi there really sorry to hear that you have had a problem, did you have any handles set? The media type shouldnt cause the problem. Red files are the same, split into segments and I have never had an issue with R3D files. Try tweaking some of the settings - luckily your project is only 42GB. I shoot my R5 for a minute and the RAW is 42 GB. Anyway let me knwo how you go and if you discover a fix for what really does sound like a glitch. CC

I just updated to DR 16.1 Beta from DR 15. I did not know about exporting project files. When I open DR 16.1 it is asking about "upgrading" the database. I am not sure how to upload (?) my old project files into DR 16.1. I can see my old project files in the Library menu but that have .db extensions. How can I make the project files work on DR 16.1? Thanks.

Hi Will, even if you had deleted Resolve 15 and then installed 16, which is the correct procedure, your database and project files should appear automatically. You should be able to just double click them to open them. If they dont you should be able to open them once inside resolve 16. If not there maybe some sort of conflict - I would contact BMD in your area and request a resolve technician. Worst case scenario the will ask you to send them a Resolve log and help you get it working from there. Reach out and let me know how you progress. Seriously if they are not working BMD will resolve it (pardon the pun) very quickly via their product support page and your country selection. Hope this helps CC

And for Premiere, we save Premiere project files every day and make backups of these, since these files takes no storage and will only link to the media. How do you do daily backups of a Resolve project? Because when I work on a project, it's on a local database.

Hi there Jian, thanks for reaching out, firstly a project file in Premiere isn't a backup, its more like an XML EDL. Resolve is actually backing up the entire project as in all the media files to relink too. You have to look at Resolve backups as more of a project redundancy, archive or project clone, not a Edit decision list thats storing the files elsewhere. The way that I do it is a three step redundancy. Create versions of my project within resolve itself, then create a project archive to a separate external disk or NAS, then clone that project archive each day using a media copying tool which only writes un copied data. Then any changes to the project daily are small, but all the media is safe. Hope that helps.

So at my workplace, we all work on a NAS server. All the iMacs are connected to this server and this is where we keep our footage. So we also store our Premiere projects files on this server, so that everyone can open the project no matter what iMac you're using as long as you have Premiere of course. So I work as color grader at my work and I use Resolve for this. When I open Resolve and create a new project, it will be saved on the local database right? I then import a timeline from an XML file. This XML will refer to the footage we all have on our server. But what do I do when I want to open the Resolve project on another iMac? I won't find it there, cause the project was stored on the local disk on my iMac. That means, in case my iMac went missing or got destroyed, then I'd lose all my grading projects, right? I've read that you have to create a PostGreSQL, but this seems so confusing to me. Really sorry for the long comment, but I'd appreciate if you could help!

@@jianzhizhang8333 The way you are using Premiere, hosting the footage from your server, you can do exactly the same thing with Resolve. Then you could eliminate roundtripping and integration errors.You can actually be color grading while your other workers are editing and sound mixing the project. Yes when you open a project or start a project it is saved to the database, wherever you have designated that to be. You can always set up your database on the server. So yes currently if you "lose" your machine and have no external backup the project work you have done is most certainly lost. I think that the bigger issue here is that there sounds like a potential business time loss - roundtripping from Prem to Resolve. There aren't two many features that Adobe suite has left that can not be done in Resolve. And with Resolve being more of a industry standard, its never to soon to make the move.

@@jianzhizhang8333 I work the same way you do, and really like to backup the actual app file so I know if something happens I will have. The footage is always backed up, and can easily be relinked if you have the application file to organize in the NLE. I have found that if you right click on your database, Resolve opening screen that lists all your projects, you can select "show in folder" and it will take you to where all your project files are stored. For me, it is in [C:\Users\Jonathan Grijalva\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\Resolve Projects\Users\guest\Projects] ----- I think grabbing these files and transferring them onto a different or backup drive will be the same workflow as backing up Premiere files. I just switched to Resolve and have to get use to this whole Network workflow. Hope this helps. So, I found this while searching for tips on how to MOVE your Davinci Resolve database - not archive projects/renders. I have a question...I've started using it, over iMovie, on my MacBook Pro. My setup is new and still being built so currently, everything is stored locally on my MacBook but that's not long-term. I'm going to get external storage soon (probably thunderbolt 3 as I work with long/large files for my KZbin gaming channel) but what I'm trying to find out is, can I move the entire production database to a new drive, getting it off the internal one on my machine, or do I just have to work locally and then create an archive of each project once it's been uploaded? And I'm right in saying that the application will move the project database itself plus all the associated media files to the external storage when it's archived - I don't have to move them manually? Just want to check I understood you correctly..

You can shift your entire database by creating a new database on a different drive. Personally as I am old school, I would go through and do each project individually to the new system or clone the existing drive to a "the new destination" using a tool like Hedge for Mac. In terms of whether you have to move them manually, it will depend on whether all of those projects still exist in resolve or not. Resolve can only archive out what is already there as an active project file. For example if you had deleted a project from the database because you had archived it to long term storage, you could simply reopen it in a new database and it should all be there. However as with all computer systems, test before deleting anything. Hit me up if you have any other questions. CC

I would probably say yes Simon, it would make it much easier for them to relink/load the project if they ever need to. Plus the easier you make it for them the more likely they are to rehire you. When I outsource grades or VFX I always ask for the digital work/project files for archiving. Its good commercial practice.

Hi Wouter, well assuming you don't want to keep your originals you would just delete the source files from your hard drive. Personally I would copy them to an external disk with a DaVinci Exchange file, like an EDL or something. Just in case. You never know with digital media. Better to be safe than sorry. Trust me on this.

I have run into a problem that when I do the export project archive, I get a dialog box message that states "FAILURE: Failed to create temporary folder!". with an Abort button as my only option. This error messages appears 3 times (after hitting abort each time). There is no archive created where specified. I am running Davinci 16.2.7.010 on a Mac running MacOS Mojave (10.14.6). I checked that permissions for the target disk/location is set to be ignored, and also have 'everyone' set to Read & Write. I have seen this issue reported many times but never saw a solution to it. Any idea? PS: I tested archiving in the past, and it seem to work fine. Since that time I did have an internal HD failure and I restored to a different, external SSD. Davinci otherwise working fine, but keep getting this error message when trying to archive projects. Help!

Hi apeel2008 sorry for taking so long to reply. It's the time difference. Yes I have heard of this , but mainly from when people change the name of their drive name and then not being able to find their project or database archive on the same drive. For now I would advise to create a EDL / XML which ever you are used to using - or works best for you - save this and the media files on a separate disk. Do this manually. Then reinstall resolve 16, and make sure that you follow these steps kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6exc6mVl7Z9pcU then, launch resolve create a new database (so a second database) on your system then import your project and try the archive again. Let me know how you go. I am sure its because you have swapped the drive name because of the disk failure and trying to save to a space that isnt properly recognised anymore. BMD should fix this.

@@cinechimp OK. I think I have it resolved. Here's what I did (in case it helps someone else). I tried exporting projects using the EDL / XML approach that you suggested, but every project seems to report one or more errors. Did not understand what this errors were (probably an incompatibility with FCP?), but I wasn't sure so did not want to trust this files. What I did was make copies of the Davinci Resolve folders that were in the Library/Application Support/BlackMagicDesign figuring if I had a problem, I could just restore them and all would be back to where I started. I figured it was an issue with permissions, and I tried changing them in MacOS (to 'ignore permissions'). That did not resolve the issue. So I went to the Preferences / System / Media Storage and removed all of the Media Storage Locations from the list, leaving only the external SSD that I use for the CacheClip folder (i.e. the top item in the list). Then I added the Root level of my /BootSSD and below that /Users/MyUserName. This would make sure that my entire user account profile would be accessible to Davinci. I was not sure if every folder under that username would also receive permissions to not, but I tried it anyway, figuring I could add more folders as I go along. Since I had a copy of the Databases and also the Application Support files, I figured I would cross my fingers and UNINSTALL Davinci 16.2.7 as you suggested in your video. I downloaded that same version and re-installed 16.2.7 again (hey ... did you know that there is now a 16.2.8?). Then I tested it again and exported the Project Archives and I did not see the error again. SO I think that solved the problem! Thanks for your help!

@@apeel2008 Hey thats great to hear. As I say in the video I directed you to, this resolves most issues in Resolve. Uninstall and reinstalling the program properly. Yes he permissions thing can be an issue but mostly come from PostgreQl resolve databases. Because you have to set permissions and grant access to work folders. And really only should be used for businesses like post houses where there are multiple users accessing a NAS. Separate to this if you are using a NAS even if you are not usin POSTGRESQL you will have to set up similar permissions on a NAS level. This is why I use a series of DAS's for now. Even though your experience hasnt been a good one, at least its fixed. On a side note how many drives are you running, are they internal, external or network and what is being saved from resolve to each destination?

My internal late 2015 iMac 5K Retina Fusion drive failed (SSD portion) and so now I just have a 5400 rpm drive as internal. I do not trust it (as it is 5 years old) and very slow so I bought a NMVE PCIe USB3.0 enclosure and a 2TB NMVE card for it and I am using that as an external boot drive (about 4 x faster than the internal 5400 HD). One day when I get the nerve up I will open up my iMac and replace the internal HD with a SSD. I also have a separate usb 3 to SATA enclosure with 1TB Samsung 860 EVO drive that I use as the location for Gallery Stills and CacheClips. I have a number of other external USB 3 drives for archiving media storage and time machine backups, but no NAS drives.

Great video, but one quick note. I watch everything with a headset. This was difficult to watch because your voiceover leans so heavily to the left channel. It would make you video a lot more watchable (at least for people like me) if the voiceover was mono, or at least evenly balanced.

So do I, but if you also export a EDL / XML you wont require the structure to be preserved, you will just need to select that folder as the new source folder.

This is awkward af. Every project should have its own folder, you back up that folder and it's all there to use later on. Pro Tools and Vegas Pro works like that for instance and it makes it super easy to just back projects up or transfer them to another user or computer.

Hey there, every project does have its own folder. The thumbnail is a visual representation of a folder structure before you even archive it. But when you archive a project in resolve 17 you are given options of what you want to keep and discard to save disk space. You can move this to any machine at any time. The same as Premiere FCP and Avid. But hey, not every program structure is for everyone. I cant stand FCP or protools, they are clunky. Just stick with what works for you brother. Thats the beauty of diversity. Theres no perfect program, thats a castle in the sky.

This video was shot on a 5dmkii in 1080P which isnt all that sharp. So it wasnt shot with the best tools. It was shot with the available tools. And it still looked good enough for you to think it was shot on a better camera. ;)
