I am currently building my first dvd library and have just begun the process of organising and cataloguing my dvds. I like the suggestions presented in this video. Firstly, the technique suggested here is a manual technique and is therefore low-tech and inexpensive to implement. It is also very straightforward to make and is a low maintenance method. As to low-tech, one can, of course, resort to technology and use a computer to create a catalogue of dvds as is suggested in the video and as I am also doing. There are problems with this, however, especially for large numbers of dvds. In the end I may resort to creating a manual catalogue, but I'll try a computerised catalogue first. Another aspect that I like is that the video suggests a variety of different ways to organise the dvds, with the choice being left up to the preferences of the owner of the collection. These suggestions certainly gave me a number of ideas. However, for the moment I have chosen to sort my collection by genre/sub-genre. As I have not yet watched all of my dvd collection, I have to use the internet for suggestions re genre etc. These suggestions I adapt to suit my own needs and preferences. For storing my dvd collection on bookshelves, I plan to colour code by genre/sub-genre. For this I will use different coloured dots and stick them on the spine of the dvd case. So, for example, I may chose a red dot for a Thriller and, say, a blue dot for Comedy. Therefore if I have a film whose genre is Thriller and sub-genre is Comedy, the dvd case will have both a red and a blue dot on the spine, the uppermost being red for the main Genre. I'll see how that works for now. Anyway, a good video with clear, sensible and practical advice.

My organizational system is actually none of these: I go by the number of ratings a movie got on the IMDB (in my case, these currently range from more than 1 million votes to barely more than 5). To keep track, I have logged all of them of course and try to update at least semi-regularly. It still works rather well for me because I usually have at least a rough idea of how "popular" or "well-known" the movie is.

I keep my DVDs in vertical wire racks, they take up a bit of room but at least the DVDs are kept in excellent condition.

Finding so hard to choose and categorise my Blu-ray / 4k / DVD collection. I want to put in order of favorite actors but also in alphabetical order of actor, but watch should I do with movies with multiple actor or series like transformers ???!!!!

To be honest I'm not totally sure but maybe I can try to help. If you really want to organise by your favourite after, don't.

Alphabetical order, genres and sub genres never work, just divide by letter and Thats it, i used to do the genre/sub genre thing and it was always a headache because nowadays films have different genres in 1, let’s say the fiasco Suicide squad: Crime, comedy, fiction, drama, action…what is it right?. Note: When using the alphabet method, Do not count ‘THE’ also if the film is a # or symbol, catalogue as such in the same row, also the criterion collection is it’s own row, i learnt this buying at Amoeba music, that’s how they organzie their dvds.
