I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again: An accommodation at work saved me and my mental health. ❤ At this very moment I am sitting in my home office, being able to control my environment, which helps me prevent overstimulation. 😊

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS EPISODE!! I was diagnosed late in life in mid-2020 at age 36, and the very hardest part of the whole process for me has been coming to terms with my diagnosis and consistency of use with the various tools and strategies I’ve learned thus far that can help to mitigate the negative effects ADHD has on my life. My second biggest roadblock since being diagnosed has been around the concept of “outing” myself in the workplace by making my diagnosis and related personal issues known to my leadership team and also stand up for myself by asking for accommodations in the workplace because I wasn’t sure what was reasonable versus unreasonable, plus I have majorly struggled. I am very appreciative of this episode (and this channel as a whole) for addressing all of the above issues specifically, but I also wanted to say thank you so much for all you do in general to help both ADHD’ers and their family/friends to understand and support one another better for mutual benefit!!

I feel like I’m in the same position with my workplace, having been diagnosed after being signed off with stress and depression, my company haven’t made any allowances since I’ve been diagnosed and shared it with them. I found myself “jobless” within the company and having to put in a grievance to get a reasonable job, so I’m just so scared to try and make anymore progress with my workplace to help me cope. I’m kinda stuck, like mentioned previously I burn through my work quickly and then end up with nothing to do and worrying I will loose my job, because I’m seen not working when I’ve just completed the work requested quickly.

I only got diagnosed last feb aged 46 and had to wait to be titrated until this May. I don’t think I would have got a single graphic design job I ever applied for if I asked for adjustments at interview. In fact most of my employers have been looking for you to say that you’d be willing to go beyond what is legally expected of you as an employee really. They want me to say that I will work beyond my contracted hours if at all necessary, that I will be flexible with them etc. Even Job centre advice is to oversell yourself really. The whole work culture will punish me for my ADHD however I play it, if I’m honest, if I mask and struggle etc. Many people roll their eyes if I even say I have ADHD.

Ok this is making me realise how supportive my company is! We have multiple soft fidget toys for meetings, I was given a standing desk and I am always welcomed to doodle or stand when a meeting gets too long. We have a colleague on the spectrum (I am assuming) who can take meetings (internal) lying on his back on the couch because that helps him think. We also have company mental health program. More advocating for companies to normalise this! Thank you for talking on this topic!

@EmsLionheart In South Africa yes😄 Thank you, I always feel really lucky. I hope this does become the norm. In the tech industry this is staring to become a thing, hope it will keep trickling into other industries as well.

I am in the process of being diagnosed but the problem is that I am a personal assistant. I literally have to "sell myself " as being organised. It's been exhausting over the years. I am 45 and have found multiple ways to (just about) cope with work - I have excelled in some jobs and absolutely bombed in others but my constant forgetfulness is extremely embarrassing and I try to hide it as much as possible. I don't whether I will ever be able to admit to any issues given the area in which I work. I am an expert at running away from certain jobs and finding new ones in which I can cope. I work well with very disorganised bosses who don't notice (or mind?) my scattiness 😂. If they work in politics or the health service (areas around which I am passionate) I find it easier to remain focused.

They should be legally required to provide accommodations and if they won't they should be heavily penalised.

Hi ive as alot of us have been down the mental health route. Ive been prescribed medication that was never going to work because i was undiagnosed at that point. I cut myself off from the world and people were a no go. I was on the brink of being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and bipolar but i knew i didnt fit that box. Eventually i got a combined adhd diagnosis and im currently on 80mg of methylphenidate. My life is now manageable however the world still dosent fully understand the full picture for people with ADHD and that mental health route is unnecessary and very damaging

I haven’t been able to work for over a decade. It’s killed what was left of my self esteem. I’m trying to scratch & crawl my way out, but I cannot find work, I’m able to do, to save my life, literally. What shortage?! I’m not on medication cuz I cannot find a dr taking new patients. 🕊️

I find myself in a really tricky situation as an elementary teacher. I dont even know what I need. Even if I asked for more planning time, that wouldnt help me actually be able to use that time. I already show up early and stay late and come in on weekends just to get planned and organized for the week. Thats not even including grading. Inreally want a position where Im in a co-teaching environment. Not a para. An actual licensed co-teacher.

Maybe being a teacher for a cyber school would help. If you work from home and can take notes from students at your desk as they ask them that would help. Then you could use that extra time that you used to use for commuting and use that for preparing and grading papers.

Can you file a grievance in the US if you don't have a union? I've only filled grievances in union shops. I'm dealing with a third shift security position that is cracking down on headphone use.

What would be the best course of action for an individual who feels they are being targeted for discrimination, for whatever reason, and the grievances they attempt to provide are ignored dismissed, or used as ammunition against the individual?

its weird i have this internal mechanism which just immediately stops me from being myself... in high school i somehow got the message that being happy nice free spirited and sort of quirky and funny was not really that cool or acceptable and i had to try harder to be more serious and fit in... now i am only remembering what my true nature is like.... i really like being me.... but somehow the world doesnt want me to be me....not sure why it causes such disturbance in society... why can people only be cbild like, relax and be funny silly and goofy when skunk drunk?
