At some point, most bass fishermen have been to a bait shop and purchased a few dozen very expensive baits called "shiners". While I am all for supporting the local tackle shops, sometimes we're on a budget and we just need to go get our own shiners. This video will show you just how easy it is to catch your own wild shiners in south Florida.

Sweet man!!!! We used to use hog feed - cheep and apparently edible!!! Sometimes they just don’t come quickly to just bread in our canals - we found that vanilla extract gives a little extra draw! Thanks for the compliment!!!

I enjoyed this video! Do you ever get any snakehead Fry whilst cast-netting? Up North here off Lake Michigan by Chicago, I chum for bait fish (Alewife, Rainbow Smelt, Round Goby and Emerald Shiners). Since castnetting is illegal here on most DNR owned & Managed lakes (private or public), cast-netting is frowned upon. There for I have to use dinners, Seine nets or sometimes - Sabiki rig them up.

Hey man. Sorry to hear that cast nets are illegal up there. Why is that?? We do get snakehead fry in the spring. They are actually really easy to spot. They stick together in real think pods and bubble on the top of the water. I’ve caught several hundred before. They actually make great bait

@@watchyourlip3209 I usually fish saltwater and we use them to catch pilchards, greenies etc out of Port St Lucie. But I was thinking of hitting a couple bait spots on Lake Ida and hone in on a few bait balls on the sonar and try a sibiki off the back of the boat. I'm sure you could also cut up some night crawlers and put them on the hooks to get the shads attention... Your thoughts?

Sounds like a plan. To be honest, I’ve never heard of anybody catching shad on rod and reel but it works for pilchards and greenies so it makes a lot of sense. I’ve just never tried it. I definitely bring a cast net as back up. If you can find them on the fishfinder it is really super easy to catch them with a net

I got steel cut oats from quaker oats. they're granules. regular white bred and pure vanilla extract and sugar. YOu said sugar in the video. It got really thick. I used a whole loaf of bread sinc ei kinda added too much water hahaha. a whole container of oats too. whoops. Lets see how it works. :) Thanks man! Greetings from KCMO. How much vanilla extract is a little? That could be a few drops, or a tablespoon. Same with the sugar. Also, do you cook the oatmeal and add the sugar, Vanilla, and bread afterwards, or just mix the uncooked oats and other stuff with a little water?

I looked this up because this baby fish appeared in the upper tank of my stock tank pond filter/ waterfall. My mystery fish appears to be a golden shiner. All I can figure is a fish egg carried to this empty tank by being stuck to a frog?

Absolutely. We are in Broward county but I believe they live all over the state. Look for canals with eel grass in So Fl. They also live near banks of lakes as well

to be honest, we are having a harder time recently getting wild shiners readily. Not sure if its the time of year or what, but its been thinner for sure. We are still catching them but, its not "1 - N - DONE" like it used to be
