An alternative can be messing with exposure inside an editing software

There's a blender addon called real camera and it has an auto exposure feature that does just that

Doesn’t work for animations tho since it auto exposes only when you manually go into camera view. Use a node setup in the compositor instead. EV Compensation is what it is called.
