Some time ago I published a video on unjamming a Dewalt keyless chuck.
A viewer, Geoffrey Herman asked:
"I'd be curious to hear your comments on what steps an owner of cordless drills can do to reduce or eliminate jamming. What sort of cleaning and lubrication might be helpful."
Here is my answer. No magic trick, just don't jam it.
The video is here:

Ben I actually ruined my first Dewalt drill I guess by doing it the No-No way. I've been much more gentile with the replacement Dewalt drill. Thanks for the video brother.

Short and sweet. And you're right - I'm a terrible man for tightening the chuck with the torque setting too high. I'll make it my New Year's Resolution. Again.

I did watch this one when you released it Ben but I was using a smart TV so no ability to comment and all that - now I'm back to normality (whatever that is) I can catch up a bit. I think there has to be a bit of luck and possibility some chucks stand up to the punishment better than others. I always use mine the correct way and I've never had any problems, apart from on one drill, which was borrowed by someone who does it the incorrect way, and the chuck has never been the same since!!!! As for the tighten the chuck, then giving it one click backwards - from what I can tell, this is one of those hoax bits of advice that's spread round social media like an unwanted rash - if this was a real thing it would be in all the user manuals (I'm prepared to be proved wrong, but not by one of these "miracle" KZbin videos that the algorithm loves to promote).

Great vid Ben I think if you tighten the chuck and give it one click back it locks in place and stops your drill bit coming off, works on the parkside drill as well 👍🏻

I’ve always done it the way you said don’t do it & I’ve never had a Chuck Jamed , Most of my drill/drivers are dewalt & I hardly ever use any clutch settings , unless I’m screwing screws in soft stuff like chipboard I always have the setting on the drill setting, Are you sure there isn’t another reason for it happening?
@BensWorkshop
@BensWorkshop Жыл бұрын
There may be an element of luck. The manufacturers recommend the way I suggested. I've always gotten away with it on Parkside drills and never thought about it till someone asked me to fix the DeWalt I fixed. Clearly it's a problem because the video has had so many views. Many thanks for watching!

You may be right. It's entirely possible the problem only occurs if you keep hanging onto it for dear life as you tighten it.

Best way is to buy a Parkside drill for £29.99 from Lidl. Beware of expensive imitations! But your point stands, don't buy DeWalt.
@diavalus
@diavalus Жыл бұрын
The chucks in DeWalt are not made by them. If you go for other brand, it won’t be much of an improvement in this department. Most tool manufacturers supply their chucks from only two manufacturers. Milwaukee is sourcing their chucks from the same supplier as DeWalt, for example.
