And in that few people only very small amount people know what triggers Financial Review. Having two PayPal accounts is against PayPal’s terms of service, also, sending money to yourself can also be seen as abusing the point system. Him having two PayPal accounts were mentioned in the letter.

I have 3 credit cards and the Amex green card. I have to keep the number of credit cards under 4 at most. One of the 3 is a business card as a sole propritor.

I recently was put under FR by Amex for my Skymiles Platinum card after requesting a credit limit raise from $32k to $36k. I did not think this was unreasonable, and I have never had a limit increase denied before over the 7 years I have had this account. I was told I needed to sign some documents giving Amex access to my previous 2 years of taxes, which I did. I was under no impression there would be an issue until only 2 days later my credit limit was decreased without warning or notice from $32k to $20k. I am now awaiting the letter from Amex explaining the decrease, and I plan on appealing. I think what happened is that my income that I reported to Amex was about 40% higher than what is reported on my taxes, because a large portion of my income comes from tax exempt sources, and therefore not reported at all. There wasn't a mechanism for me to report that on the form that they had me sign, so I am assuming when the letter of explanation comes in I will be able to call Amex and work this issue out. Anyway, I wanted to share a relevant experience.

Yeah, I'm actually the same. I have one AMEX Blue Cash Preferred that I use for groceries and gas, but otherwise, most of my spending goes on my Chase cards. 🤓

I also heard having too much of a total credit limit may trigger a financial review. Somewhere between 25k to 35k! Also, some data points say Chase will close accounts for too much of a credit limit but don't know what triggers this.

Doesn't matter I have amex blue with a 5k limit I barely used but used my capitalone & discover with 15-17k limit both was almost maxed and amex limited my credit limit to 1k stating I was at risk. Due to other card limits.

What pisses me off,is that I'm going through this because greedy people. Who ever did it, tried to buy hundreds worth in electronics online and some more at Walmart. I could understand if someone tried to buy food or pay a bills, but no, they went for the heavy stuff.

Purchases using PayPal should be ok. It's only when you are paying a non-merchant account where things seem to get flagged (e.g., paying another person).

It's a good question. If possible, I would just avoid putting obvious non-business expenses on your card to avoid getting a financial review.

Yes, they are separate companies. However, sending large amounts of money to another person can be flagged as suspicious activity by the issuer, especially if the person isn't suddenly starts sending large amounts of money.

While it's unlikely to happen, it is always a possibility. I always recommend carrying a few cards from different issuers when traveling to be safe. Whereabouts in Panama do you live? I visited the country in 2016 and absolutely loved it. I went to Panama City, Boquete, and Bocas del Toro. 😎

if self-employed your gross is a lot different than your taxable how does it work for them you can have losses on paper but still be making money so you can gross 60k and have 50k in deductions total annual income is before expenses is gross so AGI does not tell whole story bank statements can be more accurate and if uber diver your millage is not a real expense especially if you drive a hybrid car

Are you trying to use a service like Paypal or Venmo to pay via an AMEX card? If so, it might be problematic and put your account at risk (depending on the amount). I would avoid using a credit card to pay someone else as it often triggers a red flag.

It shouldn't be an issue. It seems like AMEX is more concerned about weird spending patterns (or at least purchases that may look like a red flag). As long as you're not making out-of-ordinary purchases, you should be safe. 👍

Amex has recently changed their policy to where you can transfer limits however you must leave $1000 behind. If your limit is 2000, then you will be able to reallocate only 1000.

The Check Spending Power does not lead to any Financial Review. This is an urban legend. You have a limited number of checks you can try in a 24h period. That is all. Getting a FR because of Check Spending Power checks is an Urban Legend. It makes no sense for a credit/charge card company to penalize customers checking beforehand whether a purchase would be approved. The function is only useful anyway on charge cards with no predefined spending limit - as it does alao show the American Express anti-fraud team that a huge charge is planned.

It sounds like a lot of folks have had to submit a Form 4506T. However, I don't remember having to do so when I went through the process, and it sounds like Kanniappan was only asked to submit some past monthly checking account statements to show that he could pay off the balance. The Form 4506T seems to be situational, but to be honest, it's probably the easiest way for AMEX to get a full picture of your tax and income profile. 🤓

It depends on the circumstances, but if they ask you for something, it has to be sent in, no exceptions. If they want a 4506T, but your income increased from your last tax return, you still have to send in the 4506T, but you can ask them to consider your recent paystubs, a letter from your employer, etc. Sometimes, they only want bank statements, but if they want something, you can't substitute it for something else.

Trip Astute thank u sir, I talked to a rep yesterday from Amex, after I calmly explained to her that I’m 1099 and don’t want any part of the irs and I pay my balance in full early they will review @ the end of the 2 week financial review and no other info will need to be given. As some advice to anyone listening... Do not buy bullion or coins on ur Amex it will trigger a review.

Hmm. I've not heard that before. To be honest, I would think that the opposite might be riskier (i.e., using your business card for personal expenses). I can see how a credit issuer might deem some charges as being not quite "business-related." On the other hand, since a lot of business expenses tend to be larger and more obscure, I could see how that might trigger a red flag to issuers if they were placed on a personal card. Though before I registered my businesses as LLCs, I was using my personal credit card for the expenses, and it never seemed to be an issue for me. 😊
