I have to say that your videos have been extremely insightful when it comes to GarageBand and it has actually given me a fair amount of confidence in using GarageBand as my DAW especially since I play multiple instruments myself and I'm going to mostly be recording original material if not all original. Thanks to your videos it has showed me that it is possible to produce a high quality sound using my iPad which is invaluable to somebody like me who does not have a whole lot of resources at the moment. I cannot thank you enough for these wonderful videos and the information that you have provided you have truly done a service for all of us trying to get started especially those of us starting late.

I just put up a video last week where I explain that I got a copyright claim on my song in a video and I never used loops or even the drummer, hand played everything, but the robot claimed it because I used either the stock organ (hand played) or my guitar (still played with a real guitar but using the guitar amp model) - after some research I found out it was basically a scam to try to monetize any video and they just try to wait out the 30 day claim period since probably most people give up fighting the claim. The song they claim sounds NOTHING like the song I made, not even the same chord progression.
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I probably need to talk more about these “manual claims”. His is happening a lot, especially to KZbin accounts with a lot of views, both legitimately (where songs are being used), and illegitimately like these cases. It does pay to be vigilant and dispute and bogus claims, but it’s a pain in the butt having to manage his because some lazy and greedy people want to profit form the work of others.

PETE! This is a shout-out for you Pete Johns! My song just dropped onto iTunes and all the rest, and you are my go-to teacher for all the GarageBand know-how. I would have been lost without your generosity, openness, and bright spirit. Keep delving, and keep us informed. If it’s not too cheeky, the song can be searched for as ‘Hot Woman Cool T-bird’ (cos that’s it’s name) and I used my pseudonym of Richard Getts. Now, less about you and me Pete! On loops, I noticed when uploading to CDBaby - other Apple-approved aggregators are available - that they actually specify you cannot upload Apple Loops. Period. Now, I thought, and you seem to be correcting me because your version makes more sense - that meant ANY use of Apple Loops. I was beginning to think ‘Hey, people must work with loops then somehow copy it over in some basic way’, breaking the loop down or something, but I prefer the sense and logic of what you’ve laid out in this video Pete. Yes, the more involved and creative your use of the loops, the less risk you will run of fouling some rule or other. Of course my own preference, is to use loops as an idea, as suggestions, then build the track at somewhat of a tangent away from that starting point? Hot Woman Cool T-bird, just gained a life of its own. In the end, in the nicest possible way, I felt like I was just doing what the song demanded, sussing what seemed ‘right’ and doing that next step to the very best of my ability. It grew organically on its own really, I felt like a technician sometimes just doing the flaming obvious that was right in front of me. Just keep going, run all the gremlins down. So, by all means delete my comment if it’s aa bit forward of me, but I genuinely turned to your vids every time I hit a wall, and you invariably had it covered. You Pete, are my GB Hero. Good luck and good fortune to you. Of course, I’ll be back in due course - there’s always some little nugget or a piece of inspiration you imbue, or just your convivial ‘get stuck in’ approach. You helped not only with technical guidance, but importantly made me feel, that darting off in my own direction was a good thing, and you helped me be confident about doing it. Salut for now Pete, and thanks! OH PS, I actually did PROPERLY copyright my song. I went via my aggregator’s suggested route, but it turns out I could have saved $29.99 by not bothering with them as the middle-man for copyright, because the only value is if you have another party to split the copyright and royalties etc with? And, it was a single, with a solitary songwriter and (ahem, cough) ‘Artist’ which means going direct was the best way! Ah well, I will know next time. Oh, and you have to fill in a US Tax Form. I don’t think my daughter kindly buying my track out of pity, is going to prove too much of a tax liability. Copyrighting for this for me, It’s an abundance of caution, but there are many people out there who consider it perfectly ‘professional’ to steal your work, and copy chunks discretely into their own - and some of my most peculiar and singular lyrics, appeared three months later, in a chart single, after I sent an audition tape away. The PO Box responded with someone else’s tape, and said my work was ‘not really what we are looking for at the present time’. Yet - there the lyric was, in a chart song by a big name producer, grafted into their odious and forgettable beat-mash. POINT of LAW - apparently, from reading up reliable sources, if you copyright eg with the US Copyright Office (where else) then the onus is on the ‘other’ party to prove they have a copyright to use whatever it is that is flagged up, as opposed to YOU having to prove THEY DO NOT! In the legal world, the deepest pockets often win, and that won’t be me! For $34.99 it’s probably worth it, this time around, even though the rule in the UK, USA, and maybe down your way too, is that if you drop it onto any media, it is your copyright there and then. I think, Hard Disk counts. SSD, etc is media, but I’d put it on a CD or something just to be sure. It’s not precisely clear what ‘putting it onto media’ is, these days, to me anyway.
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend. I needed to grab a beer and settle in to read your comment but we got there! 😄🙏 Always happy to hear that folks are releasing music and checking it out. I get questions about this a lot but have just never worried about it. Pete Johns You are too kind, you are a gent. Yes Pete, a wider experience of the world of ‘aggregators’ than I do. So, I was hunting around, as you know, some reviewed list of organisations from four years ago is pants, so I found this review called ‘Ari’s Take’, and this guy has released some tracks deliberately to do the research. Even, a ‘dummy’ track - the mind boggles - thank God there’s no quality-assurance, what would the pop charts do?! So, Ari seemed pretty thorough and neutral, and after pondering his pros and cons of these - like your distrokid, etc, I came to the conclusion that the closest thing to a one-stop shop was CDBaby HOWEVER PLEASE don’t take my guidance as really sound advice - I’ve done this ONCE! BUT I started, with Apple’s approved aggregators - just search for that, but some are strictly China etc, hence me relying on Ari. Yes, my discourse is long and weary, lecturers used to hate marking it. They know exactly how you felt. I just wore the bu**ers down until they marked me highly to make me not re-submit.

I've had a number of copyright notifications on some travel videos on KZbin. I put some loops together for some simple background music. Since they're not monetized it doesn't make any difference but I always object to the notifications stating it was created by me in Garageband. The people who object have 30 days to answer back but they never do. I'll use your recommendations to see if it makes any difference in the future.

Once again Pete’s on it, great info! I would like to add a tidbit on “copyrighting” your own material for next to free... We used to call it a ‘country boy copyright’! @PeteJohnsMusic Жыл бұрын
It really comes down to whether someone else has used it and protected their song. The more popular the loop; the more likely. So have some fun. Chop it up. Change the key. Change the tempo. Add some filters. Make it your own! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6C4kotuZqaHors

URGENT info for all us GarageBand users - I just saw a user on one of the web pages of Mac something or other, he says UPGRADING TO IOS 12.4 STOPPED HIS AU3 AND IAA PLUG-INS FROM WORKING. I have sent Apple an urgent request for clarification, pointing out I simply cannot update from 12.3x until they specifically give me the all-clear on this front. I literally bought Apple kit for this software and two other DAWs, it is critical for me. This guy seemed legitimate, and was regretting his update because he said his GB was useless unless he could access his instruments properly. So there you go, caution is the watchword Pete and friends, I cannot afford to chance it unless categorically Apple get back to me saying they fixed the issue. Hi mate, first of all, am hoping you and your family are safe amid the savage storms Australia is experiencing. Second, I have a question. Here’s the background: I put an unlisted video set to private on a KZbin video using GarageBand LiveLoops. I recorded a song with the LiveLoops in my own style although I used some of the “scenes” (combos of loops that came in the LiveLoop arrangement by default. KZbin said I got a copyright claim on the song. I also read somewhere that anything with a GarageBand loop in it cannot be monetise (not my purpose with the video I uploaded). So my question is, why did my song call a copyright claim???
@PeteJohnsMusic2 жыл бұрын
Hey there. Yes, all good over here. I live on the South coast and it’s the East coast that’s getting hit right now. Not good for folks there but we Aussies are a resilient bunch. So… here’s the deal. You can use free GarageBand loops and sounds in your track and not have copyright issues. However… if someone else has used those exact sounds AND has submitted them for Content ID, it could result in others getting a copyright claim from them. If you dispute this you will almost always immediately have it removed however.

Apparently, KZbin has this policy, which so far seems to have made my music ineligible to be on KZbin: “Contain any ambient sound effects (like nature sounds), production loops (such as GarageBand loops) or samples from audio libraries (like Musicbed and Audiojungle)”
@PeteJohnsMusic2 жыл бұрын
That’s odd? If you have the right to use the samples it’s generally fine?
@1974dormouse2 жыл бұрын
@@PeteJohnsMusic I am with TuneCore, which a publisher and they distribute the music to Spotify, Apple, and everything else, including KZbin. That section I copied and pasted for you is in their section and what can make your music not qualify for KZbin. It seems a little vague to me, because they don’t get specific on what kind of loop, cause, correct me if I’m wrong, but there are loops that you can change and “create your own”, and there are pre made loops. Do I have that wrong?

PETE!! I do not use loops of any kind, but I do use midi to record original drums using their stock kits, midi to record original keys, original bass through plug ins, and original guitar through plug ins, will content ID flag me for those or does this only pertain to loops? Thanks in advance

Hey there. Nope. Anything that you create won’t trigger any copyright issues unless you’re unlucky enough to create exactly the same profession using the exact same instruments as someone else who has released a song with Content ID.

If you have multiple channels on youtube and you share it on the private channel for a select few before releasing to the other channel (different login), would that trigger a content id violation ? any way around that ?
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hey there my friend. You would be totally fine doing that. (And I have done that before myself). Content ID is only activated when you release through a distributor who separately uploads your track to KZbin. Some distributors, like DistroKid, charge an additional fee for KZbin Content ID, while some like Amuse include this as a free service. Here’s a link to what these sort of videos look like on KZbin. This is the Amuse release of my song “Goats” - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZjGf4eYmLhlnMk And here’s my lyric video on this channel, which was flagged as Content ID, therefore any ad revenue from this one goes to the artist, which thankfully is me, it if t were another artist and I was using their music, it would go to them - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXa0eWmDeKp2eZY
