breathing on both sides was watt i observed most competitive swimmers did when i was a teen ager, i'm now in my late-50s. i notice swimmers who breathe on both sides tend 2 deliver more power. Maybe its just my perception.

Do you mean breathing on ones (the drill technique in the video ) or bilateral breathing?

Absolutely! Bilateral breathing, whether consistently or not, plays a crucial role in maintaining symmetry in your stroke. When swimmers breathe on both sides, it helps distribute the workload evenly between the arms, promoting a more balanced and efficient stroke. Even if bilateral breathing isn't a constant practice, incorporating it into your routine can contribute to developing a more proficient and well-rounded swimming technique. It's a fantastic way to enhance stroke symmetry and overall performance in the water. If you have more questions or experiences to share, feel free to let me know! Happy swimming! Excellent. Nice clear video with excellent superimposed graphic lines. Relating the legs to over rotating the body, and over rotating the head, is great analysis. Usually we look at the legs as separated from the rest of the body. Breathing ones is worth a try, but look out for dizzy swimmers!

Great lesson. This is a huge problem for me…lifetime swimmer, but I was in a car accident. Both legs injured. One foot was severed and reattached, the ankle/ foot are fused with no flexibility. If I i kick too hard the fused foot actually acts like a pump and pulls me backwards with tons of splaying. I have a wonderful coach who works with me exploring all types of options and drills. 1.use a pull buoy, getting used to feeling legs and knees together. Take the buoy off and consciously think of the knees hanging out together while swimming. 2. straps are available to wrap around ankles but puts strain on arms. 3. Catch-up drills. One hand/arm stroke reaches and touches the other before starting arm stroke on the other side, and 4. My favorite: we study and try a variation of the Ledecky kick (my surgeon recommends this too). I use the good leg to kick (either flutter or two beat kick depending on speed.). I Don’t kick with my bad leg at all. It just gently rolls around the kicking leg. I feel like a cake mixer with just the one attachment. lol. This has helped a lot. over rotation always a problem…so actively thinking about only one goggle out of the water when breathing. Just sharing here. Hope my challenges helps anyone out there. ❤

Your videos are among the best on swimming. .. Please remind about legs and hands movement synchronization in freestyle and butterfly... How do you keep legs and hips flat position while body is rotating? Do you do kick the same side when hand is beginning to pull.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for subscribing! I'm glad you find the swimming videos helpful. Great question about the synchronization of legs and hands movement in freestyle. For maintaining a stable position of legs and hips while the body is rotating, focus on engaging your core muscles to control the rotation. It's crucial to keep your body streamlined. As for the kick, try to coordinate it with your hand movements. When one hand enters the water, the opposite leg should kick down. This helps to maintain balance and efficiency in your strokes. I also wanted to let you know that I have a full two-beat kick course (Kick start) inside the SWIMVICE program. I have it all detailed step by step inside the course, providing a comprehensive guide for learning it the right way. Feel free to check out all the details plus more at swimvice.com/. Thanks again for your support, keep spreading the word, and happy swimming! 😎🔥💪 -Coach Mandy

Not sure if I have seen that leg splay in the pool before or not. What I do see is many will do more of a scissor kick, particularly with the back side foot which more resembles the back stroke flutter kick, but seldom with the front side leg, which would have your thigh way out in front creating huge drag. That is the disadvantage of the scissor kick, huge thrust, but also huge drag. Fine if you can't use your arms like in life guard side stroke. I guess this is like swimmers who are at a stand still in the pool. If they start to swim again, if they can do the whip/frog kick used in breast stroke, all of them will do that first to build momentum. For those of us whose feet do not turn out, it is more of the scissor kick.

Can higher core strength contribute to better balance in the water? your body really moves in a streamlined position with minimum flutter kick. I tried to minimize my rotation and ensure a quick breath but i still seem to sink, and in response my body instructs the legs to do a quicker flutter kick in the moment of taking a breath to stay afloat :D. As a beginner, finding that balance appears to be a tough one. Another alternative is to kick harder from the leg just before rotation to have more momentum and glide during the breath, and avoid sinking

Really helpful video! I'm struggling with the splay :( Do you have only half of your mouth out of the water? to minimize rotation? Do you take in some water in your mouth when you breathe and then when you are back in the water, you push it out of the mouth?
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your question! I'm glad you found the video helpful. In my technique, achieving proper positioning in the bow wave allows for full clearance of the water from my mouth, even though it may appear low. Maintaining a streamlined position and efficient rotation minimizes any water intake during breathing. I don't intentionally take in water; instead, I focus on a smooth breath in and out without any water entering my mouth. Consistent practice and refining your technique can help improve breath control. If you have more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask! Happy swimming! Coach Mandy 😎🏊‍♂️🌊

I work young swimmers (6-10y) and some are natural breaststrokers. Some will draw their legs up, as if to do a breaststroke kick while doing freestyle and it kind of looks like, what I would call, a bicycle kick but its wide like a breaststroke kick. How do you avoid that kind of splayed kick? Thanks
@SWIMVICE
@SWIMVICE 7 ай бұрын
Great question! In addressing the splayed kick issue, particularly with young swimmers (6-10y), it's essential to consider the role of proprioception, or the awareness of one's body in space. The tendency to splay the legs outwardly during freestyle can often be linked to a lack of proprioception from the feet. To address this, my upcoming Breaststroke Online Program will focus on enhancing proprioceptive awareness, offering targeted exercises and techniques. Signing up for our newsletter ensures you'll be the first to receive updates on this program and valuable insights. Stay tuned for an effective solution to refine your swimmers' technique!
