Also, I once was running a vacuum cleaner on the floor in a bedroom I was trying to rent out over the summer semester when the doorbell rang. I backed the vacuum pipe right into a 20 gallon aquarium full of African Mbuna cichlids that already must have had a crack in it, because it's smashed right open and all the fish fell out on the floor. I ran to the front door, grabbed the girl who was coming to see the house, and demanded that she come and help me pick up the fish and throw them into the guest bathroom toilet tank, figuring since it hadn't been flushed in several days it would not be chlorinated anymore. All the fish survived, and she rented the room!

When I was about 11 yrs I had MTS in a big way! I had plenty of tanks in my upstairs bedroom with everything from seahorses to gar fish. I used what ever I could find for the stands. Well, one "stand" gave way and the 10 gallon crashed to the (hardwood) floor. I tried to break it's fall and cut my ankle tendon. My dad was downstairs and raced upstairs to see what had happened. He was so cool about it and helped gather up the fish, wrap my ankle (he was a doctor) and attempt to dry the floor. He never got upset with me about this tragedy. Still to this day, worst day in fish keeping for me! I still have tanks, only on the first floor, only on tile.

One day, I walked out of my living room, across the deck, and down the gravel driveway to my car. There beside the drive, easily 100 feet from the front door, was my giant fire engine red clarkii crayfish, Sister. She was in the weeds, well on her way toward the creek bed about another hundred feet away! I never would have seen her, except my fox terrier was barking at her through the fence that runs along the driveway. Sometimes I would hear her get out at night too, and one morning, my dog brought her to me in bed! Believe it or not, after giving birth to many generations of little clarkiis, sister died of old age!

@@GirlTalksFish I know this is an older video, but my worst day was 50+ years ago. I had a 15 gallon tank that I did all the work on. One day my brother and I were fooling around and he threw a matchbox truck at me and hit the aquarium in the lower right side of the front glass and put a hole in it. Well everyone was running around grabbing bucket's and pot's too save the fish, and we did. Fortunately I had several 3 gallon bucket's for the fish tank with no soap's or chemical's in them. Afterwards we had a pretty good laugh and I went to my favorite pet shop and bought a new 30 gallon tank. I got even with my brother, I stole his girlfriend.

I lost a betta in the dumbest way. I knew they were jumpers and had bought mesh to cover the holes in the lid. This little buddy, Spirit, was on my desk at work and I had fed him by removing the plastic over the feeding hole at the front of the tank. I didn't replace the plastic but though 'oh, I'll just be a second', went to the copier, and when I came back he was dead on my desk. I was heart broken.... he was one of the first fish where I started to feel like I was getting a good handle on the hobby!
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Holy cow, I can't believe Spirit found an escape route in the little time it took you to go to the copier! I've definitely had my lid off for much longer when doing water changes, but so far Soundwave has stayed in his tank. I'll definitely be more careful from now on... thanks for sharing!

I acquired too many fish at once at an auction and did not have enough quarantine tank space to house them all, so I put one batch of fish directly into my 100 gallon tank ... looked good for about a week, then those fish and many rainbows, yoyo loaches, tetras, and clown loaches died within a week :( lesson learned - do not buy more fish than you have quarantine tank space for ;)

It was my fault but also something I didn't expect my betta to do. I had a 10 gallon with a Halfmoon female inside of, the day prior I topped off the water sense it was getting low and figured having the water level a bit higher would be fine..... it was not. She noticed the water level was close enough to the open space in the lid (which was there for my HOB filter) and jumped through it and behind my dresser. I have to specify that space was not very large but she noticed it and took her chances with it.

@Dovietail5 жыл бұрын
Man, depression can be an expensive condition to deal with if you also have fish fever! It's possible to put hundreds or even thousands into a small tank and then suddenly lose the interest and passion that triggered your hobby and find yourself barely able to take care of your investment. I find it easier to keep things pretty low maintenance, just in case. That way, when you're down, things can pretty much take care of themselves until you come out of it and can rejoin your hobby and feel the love again!

More like “never lose interest in the hobby when your parents are still in the picture”. Adults who don’t live with their parents don’t have to worry about not being allowed to have fish lol.

My first 10 gallon was on my dresser. The dresser didn't have a enough support and started bowing under the weight very gradually. Then I noticed a tiny crack forming at the back of the tank in the center. I went to start emptying the tank and as soon as I put a pitcher in to scoop some water for the fish to wait in the crack shot all the way up and started seeping out. Luckily I was able to drain it fast but I lost a few fish in the ordeal and now I am SUPER paranoid about where I put my tanks and I have to be absolutely sure it can support the weight.

I overstocked my 10 gallon tank and I did not that know I should put bio media in my hang on back filter. I am having algae problem for 2 weeks and daily 50 percent water change is helping. I am wondering if I attach another hang on back filter with proper filter media will help or not.
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Algae is a pretty common with new tanks, so no need to stress about it yet. I would just buy some filter media and add it to your existing hang-on-back filter. No need to run two filters. If you haven't cycled your tank yet, you can always ask a friend or a local fish store if you can have some of their used filter media, which will be full of beneficial bacteria. Hope that helps!

A guy I watch lost about $1000 in African Cichlids after a 50% WC because his utility added extra ammonia when heavy snow and rain in his region caused potentially harmful runoff (he called the utility to confirm this). Not a bad idea to test water before you add it if there's an extreme weather event that might affect drinking water.

My worst day happened last week, actually 😭 I scaped a low tech, planted tank..... I put a planted substrate in, poured the water in, and was SHOCKED by how much sediment it stirred up! It had so many clay-sized particles that it wouldn’t settle and legitimately looked as though I was going to have to scrap everything 😭 four water changes and two days later I got everything under control, but those days were filled with so much panic that I’d rather not go through it again!

So this took plays 2 days ago actually, i have a 220L fresh water tank that i fill with substrate, live plants, and rocks. This story started of when i buy 6 dollars (90k rupiah) worth of plants thats, i know it not a lot but considering the plants in my country is just 1 cent a plant, its good enough for me. So i just realised that the plant arrived and I didn’t notice so it stayed on my drive way for a day, but thankfully still alive after i soaked it for 3 hours or so. So its the middle of the night, i just finished my college assignments then I decided to plant them with fish in it. The fish i have is 2 alligator gars, albino bichir, RTC, and an oscar tiger, and yes i dip my hands in the tank to plant :). After 30 minutes worth of planting some java fern, java moss, amazon swords, rotalas, and some other plants that i dont know the name. I was happy and excited to see my plants and my aquarium look beautiful, so i went to bed feeling joy. Sadly i woke up soaked because i put my aquarium near my bed, and my bed is just the mattress on the floor. The sight i see is heartbreaking since there is the water level is droping, my fish panicking, my plants floating cause the fish uprooted them, im just stressed because of it. After cleaning it up and every thing i noticed a huge crank from end to end at them bottom part of the tank. Just today i glued it and wait till it dry. At the time my fish is living on a huge bucket and some small 12L aquarium i have from my junior high years :). The lesson i got is, have the table that is equivalent or bigger than the aquarium, because i used a small table with a plank of wood that is widder than the aquarium it self and some styrofoam on top if it. Thats my story, im sorry about my bad english cause im not very good at it hehe :)

My worst day in fish keeping happened three days ago. I started a siphon a to drain one gallon of water from my shrimp tank to do a 10% water change. Because I'm cheap, I've just re-purposed a catheter tube to use as a siphon. It takes forever to drain anything. While, normally I stay close by until the gallon jug is full, this time I was scared away by someone entering the room whom it's best to avoid (let's just say my family could write an Asian-American novel just as sad as the best of them). I completely forgot about the siphon... You know where this is going. Any ways, six+ hours later, I happen to come by the tank, and I see that half the tank is empty. 3-5 gallons of water had soaked into the carpet and into table under the aquarium, ruining its wood. I learned that day that Bissell is a trash company, because my parents' Bissell wet/dry vacuum cleaner barely pulled a suction and then spewed out a foul, yellow liquid accumulated in the hose from the last time someone tried to use it to no avail. Now I had 3-5 gallons of dilute unthinkably disgusting solution soaking into the floor. So I started using any bits of scrap cloth I could find to soak up the mess, wringing out everything into a bucket (and trying not to think of the fluids). After getting barely any water out but soaking my hands in unthinkables for an hour, I finally gave up and found 4 fans (2 crappy ones that were actually a space heater and an air purifier), and ran them pointed across the carpet for three days. Now the carpet has a yellow stain on it but seems dry enough. It is bone dry, but only the people who tear up the carpet will know how much the floor is damaged. There wouldn't have even been a stain if I hadn't bothered with that Bissell. :( Don't buy a Bissell :(

My worst day: I had a fluval canister filter 207. I was going to clean out the tubes so I took the connector off to let the tubes drain into a bucket. But I left the intake and outtake pieces in the tank, so 70% of my 37 gallon tank siphoned out onto my wooden floor for 20 minutes while I was cleaning the rest of the filter...

I think the only worst story I have was I shattered a fish tank and it wound up cutting me up a bit. the biggest thing that I found difficult about the hobby was I must have had over 100 male betas that died. finally figured out how to fix the water and I don't even need water dechlorinator it's amazing basically what I do is I fill up a 5 gallon water dispenser it's made of plastic it sits for 2 days and the water is completely drinkable then when I do my water change whether it's weekly or a full water change I put a piece of almond leaf into the water because I like the tint and also it keeps my fish healthy I officially have two community tanks and one female beta who has her own tank. My goal is to get another large tank and what I want to do is I want to attempt can't believe I'm saying this to use aquarium soil because there are other plants that I would really like to grow Finally the water is cool enough where I can actually keep other types of plants I tried water lettuce again I got four for three US Dollars and they were beautiful and they need 6 hours of light so they get 2 hours in the morning and 4 hours at night and hopefully by the end of the week they won't be yellow in any way shape or form What I did discover was my medium size tank needs two capfuls of liquid fertilizer and my largest tank needs three. I've got very good fish food and like I said I don't need any water deflorinator I have a container of messing blue just in case yeah I just feel happy that after 3 years my tanks don't look like war zones and my fish are alive and I mean really alive and thriving What I'd like to do is set up another community tank with a few more female bettas and a fish that they seem to get along with . I like guppies but they're not exactly peaceful fish sadly oh my guppies chewed each other's tails and so I need about I don't know maybe three to four months for the tails to grow back

I haven't had any terrible, terrible mistakes yet, but I learned the importance of quarantining fish when I bought two female Endler's livebearers to add to my existing colony and ended up killing three of the fish that were already in the tank with an unidentified disease likely fungal in origin. Another time, I killed my Amano shrimp after I added Neocaridina to the tank, not thinking that they could cross-infect. The lesson learned is to avoid aquarium smallpoxblankets.

Over a month ago I noticed I had a camallanus worm infestation in my 29 gallon all planted tank. I took one of the fish to the vet to confirm my diagnosis (which was correct) I had 2 guppy females, their 50 fry, 10 kuhli loaches, 11 amano shrimp and 7 females bettas (all from the same spawn). There were hundreds of dollars worth of plants in the tank. My vet gave me directions to use Levamisol. He said to throw everything in the aquarium away (including the 60lbs of sand and fluval stratum), scrub and clean all the hardscape, then boil the wood and bake the rocks in the oven. I took the fush and put them in a 10 gallon aquarium and put all the shrimp and snails into a separate aquarium (since they might complete the worms life cycle) to treat them once every 2 week for 6-8 treatments!... the whole thing was a complete disaster! I lost several bettas, most of the fry, both female guppies for reasons you might not expect. I was having to do daily water changes on both tanks because I couldn't use anything to help balance the cycle of the tank (I could not keep the nitrites under control! No matter what I did). I've had nightmare after nightmare. My story is too long to finish on here but I just want to say I'm still in the hobby, I've learned many lessons, I am a better fish keeper and I still have more plans for the future.

We have some new fish now but I wish we still had him. Now I am nervous to get my own fish tank ( the saltwater one it my parents) I hope my brother don’t dump all the fish food in! Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that! To clarify, I would recommend removing the eggs and adding methylene blue to the container they're in. In other words, don't dose the entire main tank with the adults and other animals in it. If you're putting the eggs in a breeder basket, dosing also wouldn't work since the medication would spread to the rest of the tank with the shrimp in it.

Me and my cousin were fighting and we accidentally shattered the glass to our 5 gallon tank, he tried to stop it from spilling but instead it gave him a huge cut, next thing you know my bed was soaked

Hello Gamer’s Wife: I like your videos - they are practical, pragmatic and infused with excellent advice. My worst experience occurred over 30 years ago when a thermostat for a heater in a 75 gallon tank malfunctioned it did not switch off) and killed three magnificent albino Clarias Batrachus and a Plecostomus. I was very distressed and almost quit that day. Fortunately, I have had no disasters since, although I have an irrational fear that a silicon seal will fail one day and one or other of my tanks will explode. I can’t explain why. More power to you. Oh my goodness, that sounds terrible! I bought a heater controller recently to try to prevent that kind of thing... and then the controller failed on me! Glad that you stuck with it and haven't had any major disasters since then. :)

Never buy a used tank that has been dry for more than a few weeks. Good silicone could hold your tank up more than 10 years but when u change from wet to dry to wet again the silicone will die.

So full disclosure . My day job is a safety coordinator for a major print company . So i was doing water changes on the 55g and 20g tall tanks in my kitchen and my tubing on my python popped out spraying water all over my kitchen floor. So idiotically as a safety coordinator my extension cords where on the floor and I electrified myself. Thankfully GFCIs are a thing but it was weird and it took a day for my feet to feel normal. TL;DR Make sure all of your electrical stuff is off the floor.

New fish in uncycled temporary tank. 8/10 neon tetra fish died. I thought Adding prime everyday would be enough.. ive since talked to people and they say it was probably weak fish and that prime should have been enough. Idk what happened, but now i have two lonely neon tetras and one of them is sick

I enjoyed this look inside Zenzo's personal life! 😂🤣 Aquaman role playing can be ugly! I "met," Bentley over the horrible loss video, a great man and I still feel very badly about it. Escaping animals scare me. We lost a Salamander one year decades ago, the kids called her Carly. I kept the tank level low, we did not have HOB'S yet, all undergravel filtration yet she disappeared. Years later I found her little dried up body in a hide - a - bed, what??!! I always appreciate Aquarists sharing the bad times. I know it is difficult but we can learn more this way than if we only see the good times. I was first in the hobby in the 1960's I had Angels, I loved them. Got out in 1978. Last year, due to extended illness I decided to get back into it. The changes in equipment and especially available fish species is staggering! Really enjoying your work on aquariums, I hope to catch up on all of your work and yes, if you think we can learn from bad things that happen to you and your fish,I will never insult or ridicule you for sharing. Blessings!

The same thing happened to me and my first amano shrimp Panko! She went missing for half a year and I found her body under our bed when I went to clean out the dust bunnies. Guess I should sweep under there more often!

@@GirlTalksFish that is awesome! I use silly names. My Betta is "Spot," but it could be Frank, Chuck etc. Hey I sent you a pic on Instagram, I thought it appropriate. I do not expect an answer, I just know that not everyone checks Instagram messages. I had never seen an aquarium like it before. Still enjoying your videos!
