Reel should be .005” or .02mm from the bed knife. Check out my tips video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3_XdJ-Hq9Snfqc

Dude I have so many questions... 1st, have you changed the bedknife yet and if so how was it? 2nd, do they recommend 80 AND 120? Or do you just prefer to fine tune it? And lastly if your drill overheats too much, Lowe’s sells a 1/2 in corded hitachi still for 40 bucks that works awesome for backlapping.. just thought I’d share since one of my makita drill literally got so hot backlapping.. the chuck snapped off lol don’t make that same mistake I did
@SunnyBermuda4 жыл бұрын
Ask away! 😎 No, haven't needed to change the bedknife, but it looks simple enough. I did the 80/120 from my wood working days. I figured the concept was similar - use a higher grit for that pristine fine edge. 😉 I'll keep that in mind about the drill. The one I used seemed to handle it just fine, barely got warm.

You’ve motivated me to sharpen my 6 and 10 blade cartridges. Nice pop-up table too. Who make the table? Looks like your bed knife is newer that the reel. Who is your parts supplier?
@SunnyBermuda2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s really easy to maintain the real. Quick backlap and wipe some Fluid Film on the reels before each mow. The table is by Keter: amzn.to/3KTZ0Zq I use AllettUSA for parts.

Goo day sir, do you do all of the service for your reel mower? If not how do you get it serviced if I don’t want to do it? I’m in newnan Georgia
@SunnyBermuda2 жыл бұрын
🌞 Yes, I do all the service on my reel mower, every thing from engine to repairs, if any. Any local small engine/mower shop can service the engine. They may can backlap the reel for you, but you will have to find someone to grind the reel if it really needs it. You can also mail your reel cartridge to Allett USA for grinding if you can't find anyone local. Reel Rollers in Buford, GA may can help, too.

I knew you had one of these videos, thank god, now I can order from Amazon for my Allett Liberty 43 sharpening. Do you need a 120 and 80 and do you have to use them everytime you sharpen?
@SunnyBermuda2 жыл бұрын
No, some people only use 80 which is what I recommend if you only want one. Yes, I would use the compound each time you backlap. If you get a gauge like I use in my tips video then you may only have to backlap once a season. Don’t forget the Fluid Film.
@mikedelta987 Жыл бұрын
Did you switch to the 120 after while? Or kept using just the 80?

Back lapping does sharpen the bed knife. It restores the interface between bed knife and reel.
@thompwa14 жыл бұрын
So, swardman reels come from the factory with a spin grind and they say you're technically not supposed to backlap a spin grind. I'm not 100% sure why but they say unless it has a relief cut into the blade it doesn't really have the same end result. I don't know enough to argue one way or the other, but I was just curious if the Allett manual says differently?
@SunnyBermuda4 жыл бұрын
The Allett cartridge does not have a spin or relief grind on them. 🌞The manual didn't mention backlapping so I consulted my Allett buds from England. In fact, I think they recently release a similar video. I know the grass cut like butter and the reel action was quiet like scissors after doing this. Not sure about a Swardman.

Dude, only turn your reel backwards while there’s compound on it. You turning the reel into the bed knife with compound still on it is no different than driving it into a pile of sand while the machine is running. Worse, actually, because silicon carbide is way harder than sand. Only turn it backwards until you get the compound off.
