Thank you so much for this video 🙏🏼 it helps a ton. I just accidentally deleted 56 GB of Data I had and lost all of my vocal samples on all of my unfinished projects from the last 3 years 😅 kind of got smacked in the face by the universe. But now I’m on a fresh start and can go in now knowing how to back up my projects so thank you 🙏🏼 and I believe everything happens for a reason so no time was wasted it’s all part of the journey and we are always growing and getting better every step of the way. It was very stressful letting go of all of that but I have now fully accepted it and I’m ready to recreate these projects even better and start more new chapter with the peace of mind of having back ups 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

So if I want to have my files organized by project folders I would need to select a folder per project every time I create a new project? I feel that FL Studio needs to improve this. When you use Logic Pro or Ableton, once you save a project, all contents from that folder will be on a dedicated project folder of that project itself automatically. If FL manages to make this automatic, It would be amazing. I love FL but I feel they need a bit of an improvement in file management so it can be a bit more user friendly. I know this video is from 2018, but yet its good info. I love your channel Michael. Keep being amazing!

The amount of times I've loaded up a project that was fine last time I worked on it and for some unbeknownst reason everything is out of time, missing or freaking out.... It has had me soooo mad I've felt like just giving up on my art. You're so correct about walking away and having a moment lol. Learning how to zip up projects and move them around safely has helped me so much, especially since I reformat my OS every year in a bit of computer spring cleaning. Thank you.

When saving/exporting mixer tracks always, always, always save or back them up as a floating-point (32-bit or 64-bit). This saves your audio at a very high quality and if your audio is clipped, you can simply turn it down and rebalance your mix while preserving all of your transients/dynamics. Please don't forget this!

Hey Michael, Great Vid as usual! Would you mind if I elaborate on some particular points for your subs? Maybe get some things cleared up myself at the same time! IF YOU'RE SEEKING THIS INFO PLEASE READ THE WHOLE COMMENT NOT JUST THE FIRST FEW LINES BEFORE YOU GO JUMPING HEAD FIRST RIGHT IN. 1. If you've been in the habit of simply going to, File | Save As... | OK. Then the most likely place you will find your (probably gigantic amount of) audio files will be in the following location: Windows: Program Files (x86)/Image Line/FL Studio 12/Data/Patches/Recorded Mac: Something similar I'm sure :D Q: If I click and drag (or copy/paste) the ENTIRE Image Line folder from the path above from my PC to my External Hard-drive, simply moving between two open Explorer windows, will that then copy everything across backing it up as it is? Further, if I was to reformat my PC to a fresh install of windows (or simply wished to load a project from the HD itself) do you think I would need to reload onto the PC following the EXACT file path as I copied from? ie. How does FL associate a projects (*.flp) files with the matching audio? Is it through the windows directory and so specific to the file path or does it manage these assets internally? Indeed, I am in need of fresh formatting and I can just imagine a nightmare scenario where I do this, get Fl re-installed and all my files reloaded onto the PC (let's say just bang! directly on C:/ ''master'' folder) and all the midi loads in fine but FL can't find the audio. This is a huge problem because I don't know if you've noticed yet but that default location saves EVERY TAKE even if you have PURGED UNUSED AUDIO... Similarly, VST *.dll's..... will they need to be in a corresponding folder for the *.flp file to recognize them or will a simple Plugin Scan re-link them all nicely? thanks to any who can help!
@inthemix6 жыл бұрын
UPYA the best was to avoid this is to set a new folder location for each project. In the general settings somewhere there is a project folder option. Save each project into a new sub folder on your PC and then the image line folder will not be necessary. In FL studio 20 they have removed the need for that folder precisely because of your problem. If you are worried about losing data, save your projects as Ilzopped loop files and then when you open them, set the folder locator to be the new unzipped folder. That way you won't lose anything
@upya38136 жыл бұрын
Wow super fast reply! That's great I appreciate it! I haven't upgraded yet because I was holding off until I did this PC reformat/re-install windows etc. but are you saying that if I upgrade now, will FL20 reorganise or auto apply the project file option to each *.flp?? I've got literally HUNDREDS and going through them individually, while it may be fun on one hand, will be incredibly frustrating on the other! SAVE ME MIKEY! lol tell me I got that right? -- Also the ''folder locator to be the new zipped file'' that would be prior to updating correct? AND if what I hope above is not the case
@inthemix6 жыл бұрын
UPYA if you zip each project you can unzip then when you install and run fl20. FL 20 won't automatically re organise your files but it also won't delete them because it behaves as a separate program. View it like installating Photoshop and logic Pro. They are different programs. For instance, I have FL12 and FL 20 on my computer and they don't share any of the same files or information :) that means hat updating can't cause any major problems

I did backup all my old songs from 2018 - 2019, I didn't really set the recording in one project folder or export a zip tho... All I did was adding all the folder that is needed to the google drive sync, so it's quite a mess... but all that matters is I got all the files and if I want I can download them and reorganize them later... (then my laptop died, but all my important stuff is safe :D) Unfortunately, I lost all my projects from 2020 - Early 2021 because I'm lazy to set up the google drive sync or do a manual backup, pretty sad... But fortunately tho, I already uploaded my songs to the distributor site (I don't normally do this, usually I wait for all the songs for my album to be finished before I upload them). Also, the more fortunate thing is I already backed up my thesis animation project to my external hard drive :D. So I learn from my mistake and I will just make backups every time I make a new project... (And I immediately set up the google drive sync to secure my thesis)

Hey can I get some clarity on how to save the audio to a project folder? So this folder is basically a folder of your own choosing that you could save anywhere? Like could you create a data folder on your external drive and then just save all your projects in that folder? I’m sorry if that question is redundant. I’ve been having trouble with losing files and I really wanna understand a best practice for file management.
@EminoMeneko7 жыл бұрын
As an IT I can tell you to script your backups so you don't need to worry about them and having a NAS is a plus. Of course a cloud backup should complete these because of fire. Should any fire take place your data is gone forever, should you own a NAS or not. EDIT: Windows 7 and further comes with Robocopy which is a CLI tool so you can script everything. this is what I use to backup my photos on an external drive for instance. How robocopy works is replicate the changes between a source and a destination. For instance Day 1 I do a backup for the first time. I have a ton of data to backup and it will take ages. day 2 I have a certain amount of data edited. Robocopy will compare files and act only on the changes. files removed from the source will be removed from the backup drive which saves space (this behaviour can be changed if you prefer) New files will be created as will edited files be. result of the operation. The backup took way less time. So on the root of my external drive I have scripts I launch at will. Should you go the NAS way you can even tell Windows to backup regularly without you noticing or acting. All you have to do is do your stuff and forget about the backups. As this ensures the backups are regular, they will never take too long (unless you change a ton of data in the meantime of course).
@inthemix7 жыл бұрын
ooo ooo Yeah that's excellent advice, I suppose that's best if you want to back up your whole system routinely? I hadn't thought of that necessarily, I was only really thinking about backing up specific critical data,I guess I am not too worried about my whole computer as I feel comfortable resetting everything from a new machine. Thanks for the advice

@@ManpreetSingh-ek5mb To open a project in a new computer without loss of samples, you need to export as a zipped loop package, like Michael explains at 2:00.
