NOTE: This video still applies to winches with the new style solenoid box that the #63139 winch comes with! It uses the same style solenoid and wireless receiver as the #61840 shown in this video.
A VERY simple modification for the Harbor Freight 2500# Wireless-only winch that is a must. By following the video, you can add in an ON MOMENTARY-OFF-ON MOMENTARY switch in parallel to the wireless receiver and effectively add a hard-wire connection to your winch for added dependability. Losing your remote or a dead remote battery is a thing of the past.
---
WARNING :: PERFORM THIS MOD AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Be sure to follow safety procedures; disconnect the battery before doing any service to any electric components. Always wear eye protection when welding or grinding. Keep fingers out of moving parts.
THIS WILL VOID ANY AND ALL WARRANTIES ON YOUR WINCH.
---
For this mod, you will need:
On Momentary-Off-On Momentary switch
14/16 gauge wire
5x female blade connectors
3x male blade connectors
4x #10 ring connectors
Wire stripper/ crimping tool
Wire cutters
Philips head screwdriver
Silicon/ brush-on electrical tape
Paint markers or something to identify wires
Method based on this tutorial: www.hondaatvforums.net/forums/...

I bought the 2500# Badlands winch to use with a Brimley Box Blade I already have for my John Deere X300 Lawn Garden Tractor. Since the Brimley Box Blade swiveled 360 degrees, and was hard to use snowplowing in reverse to see what you are doing. So I built a front frame mount on the JD x300 for the winch to mount too and the Brimley to connect together, so the winch was used to raise/lower the Brimley as a snowplow. I made the snowplow 21-inches height x 48-inches wide, by using a plastic barrel. The Brimley Box Blade is only 15" height x 37" wide normally. I then added a (2) 4" wide x 48" long scrap 1/4 plate steel to the plastic barrel for a snowplow cutting edge, which worked great. This is where I then followed the instructions in this video to add a momentary toggle switch to the dash of the JD X300 to use to raise/lower the plow blade. When I did this, I kept it wired so both the momentary toggle switch and the wireless remote both worked on the winch, but was sluggish or not enough power to operate winch. Note: I did have to rewire the red (+)/black (-) #10 wire from the battery to the winch [for more power] using an old jumper cable wires to carry the load easier to the winch. Then it work flawlessly. I live in Washington, Maine currently, where it has handled the winter 2017-2018 snows on a 300-foot long driveway; plus other areas. His video for the modification works very well and give 5-stars otherwise for his innovation. I hope this helps others. ShaRon K. kellysharon7579@gmail.com if you have any questions on my build too.

Exactly what my dad and I talked about this morning. He has a rhino 660 that he is putting a snow blade on and was worried about wearing gloves and using the remote. Now he can have both like you have it. Thanks so much and using a marker for each out put helped big time! I will update when we do the mod.

This was seriously a perfect how to video. I followed the steps you showed and everything went perfect. I will have to change out my switch. The one I got is just an on/off/on switch. Not a momentary. Guess I wasn’t paying attention when I bought the switch. BUT everything worked great. Thanks for an awesome video.

This was a lot easier than it looks in the video. I bought a KFI winch switch for $15 from Rocky Mountain ATV. Took me about an hour. I removed the rubber bushing and ran all through that hole and used silicon to seal it. Awesome video thanks

Thank you so much man, thank you for showing us how to do it step by step. I put the same winch on the back of my 4 seater RZR but I been through 2 winches because the wireless part goes bad every time, so I bypass it like you did and bought the same switch from tractor supply, so now I don't have to worry about the wireless part because I have the switch now.

Just wanted to say a big thank you for the great tutorial! It stopped me from having to continue to beat my head against the wall. Don't worry about the video being long. I hate it when someone has a video like this that's way too short to be any help to anyone. Those people seem to get too excited to post a video that they forget that they can retry it and get a better video.

i guess mine is different... when wiring up the switch, i discovered the wire that goes to the middle leg on the switch...on my winch was a ground wire, not a power wire. so i tried using a jumper off the red power wire, it worked...once then did nothing untill i disconnection the wire from the switch and reconnected it, it worked again ...once, then i had to disconnect / reconnect the wire again.. so yeah, im going to stick with the remote for now.lol

Thanks tons! Had read up on this winch after seeing the cheap price and was discouraged to see that a lot of the remotes were failing. I will probably set mine up (F150) with those quick disconnects, and place one switch set where I can use it for dragging stuff in, and also build me a 12' cord (as a back up for the remote) for loading motorcycles.

+billmcgraw1959 I actually rewired this winch to the front, and put a new winch on the rear (this position) and made a remote for the new one. I found some small plastic boxes on ebay to hold the switch so it looks "professional", braided the wires and wrapped them in shrink tubing.

I mounted my winch on a trailer hitch "stinger" extension with step. I never plan to use it for anything really heavy, mostly raising a 22 ft, 90 lb sailboat mast, which is a bit annoying to do without a second person to put in the rigging pins. Having the extra switch at the winch will be handy.

Thanks for an informative video! My follow-up comment has nothing to do with your installation here, but it IS important. I couldn't help but notice the spring clip on the hook at the end of your winch cable should be on the INSIDE of the hook, not the outside. The purpose of the clip is to keep the hook on whatever it's hooked to. Again, thanks for a good video! :-)
@KeystoneMotorsports
@KeystoneMotorsports 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the clips on these are kinda cheap and it ended up bending out of shape and wouldnt grab the hook anymore.
@fhuber7507
@fhuber7507 6 жыл бұрын
The safety clip bends first time you actually put a load on the winch. From then on its just annoying. I cut the rivet and removed it. If you do your rigging correctly, you don't need the clip.

Im doing the same thing for my atv.i was disappointed finding out they are wireless now.i bought the 1200lbs about 8 years ago to pull cars onto my tilt trailer worked great.the wireless was a separate option you had to buy if u wanted it back then.i did so i could be in the car as i pulled it on. what I found was that the signal was slow to connect n disconnect from the receiver so a bump would somtimes make it run to long.not good so on my atv i want a hard wired connection.also batterys in the remote will go bad or corrosion will get it.you may not realize it till you need it miles from help.

Every time I would take extended ride in ATV I would test my remote and this winter it finally failed. When I press power the remote does not illuminate, now I do not have power to winch, unsure if it gets feedback and the light is the pairing, if so perhaps I do not have issue, anyhow I would like to have option to manually use the winch and this will help with that taking the testing phase from the project. Found set of 5 switches for $15 shipped on Amazon so will order those and start my project when they arrive. I had already bought some relays and if there were any distance involved i would recommend installing the relays close to controller and using a ground wire to trigger relays so no worries that the wires going up to switch could cause any issues with there being live wires, possibly unfused, that could touch a hot engine component, get bound by suspension or steering, get whacked by debri etc.. so since my winch and switches will be within a foot of each other I feel safe without those relays, but if others have distance, such as your using switch on cowl, I would recommend a pair of relays, 1 for in, 1 for out, they can be had similar price 5/15 off Amazon as well.. I use those to power on headlamps, fog lights, and other devices that pull current at distances or past hot components, engines/exhaust, of through sheet metal, firewall, cowl..

Actually the 2 relays, if large enough could replace entire controller... and an inline ANL fuse, or similar would protect circuit...

Nicely done, Doug. I wouldn't want to rely on a stupid remote for this. One, Odds are good you're stting in the seat while winching- steering and keeping the throttle pinned so the charging system feeds the battery, and two- wouldn't it just SUCK to buried up to the floorbords in mud and have the remote battery go dead, or lose the damn thing in the mud? No way. I'd just set fire to it and walk away... :D

You'll find you don't need to do all that. You can control the winch by using the white and yellow remote receiver wire connections on the contactor with a momentary single pole double throw switch and connect the common to 12 volts. This also makes it easy to put limit switches in the system. For instance, I use the winch for my plow blade. Having put a limit switch on the retract keeps from overloading the winch and possible damage to it. You don't need that big of wire either nor a higher current rated toggle switch.

I'd have to see the switch, and do a couple of tests with a voltmeter to be CERTAIN I expect the 6 lug switch is a DPDT vs the one used in this video is a SPDT. (DPDT = Double Pole, Double Throw, SPDT = Single Pole, Double Throw) If that is correct, you can just ignore one set of 3 lugs in a row. 90%+, this is what you are looking at. There are some interesting things you can do with a DPDT, but none would apply to this project.

@KeystoneMotorsports

You need to replace the wireless solenoid as well, the remotes run on 315mhz but are coded differently so multiple winches can be used within the same area. You can contact Badlands to get a new one. You can weatherproof the switch buy coating it and the connections in silicone in conjunction with a rubber cover for the toggle. In your case, you may want to modify a dry box from Home Depot (about $8) to house the switch and/or remote next time.

So you had three wires for that momentary switch the power and then you're in and then you're out there's no extra ground cuz I seen you only have 3 wires coming out of that plastic box and also did you have to purchase a winch plate so your rollers on the front of the winch has somewhere to mount it to you know where the hook goes up and stops I don't know it's called kind of like a guide for your winch cable how does that amount must be out on a plate right cuz mine didn't come with a plate for that so you have to order that separately.
@KeystoneMotorsports
@KeystoneMotorsports 7 жыл бұрын
Yup, no ground as you are just making a circuit and not powering something. I did start buying winch plates. The roller guide, or fairlead (hawse if using synthetic rope), mounts sooo much easier.

I removed the remote box last weekend. Just unhook it and wire in switch leads as shown.
@ThunderDivine
@ThunderDivine 9 жыл бұрын
you dont need that big of wires cause its just signal power that goes from the switch. - the heavy power goes thru the relays inside the box only.

No. You will be hard pressed to find a waterproof switch. Most are only water resistant with a rubber boot.

I have this winch with the remote. The battery in the remote seems to have died. I took the remote apart but only see the circuit board. I'm assuming the battery is behind it? Do you know how to change the battery in the remote?
@KeystoneMotorsports
@KeystoneMotorsports 7 жыл бұрын
With the buttons face down and screws up, they should be on the back of the board. They are about the size of a nickel, and under two holders. You may have to bend a tab up and use a small screwdriver to slide them out. It uses two 3V CR20132 batteries.

how do you get the hook through the roller piece
@KeystoneMotorsports
@KeystoneMotorsports 7 жыл бұрын
Ronnie Huth Remove a roller, or cut the hook off and put on a hook that's removable. I'd suggest the latter, cause if you accidentally suck the hook through the fairlead you have to do more work to get it out. You can also buy a stopper and put it on when you replace the hook.

Mine doesn't have a green antenna wire coming from the wireless unit. It has black, red, yellow, & white. And each of them are connected to the main unit. Can someone tell me how I need to do it?

Single Pole Double Throw I believe SPDT in electrician speak.

That would be correct; single pole double throw. If it had 6 terminals on the back it would be DPDT; double pole double throw, which would also work as long as it has a momentary function.

The remotes arent water resistant, so they are extremely prone to water contamination if left in the elements or submerged. This eliminates that possibility.

I lost my remote. I will buy the remote from anyone who converted theirs.
@KeystoneMotorsports
@KeystoneMotorsports 8 жыл бұрын
This conversion does not delete the remote. And from what I have seen, the remotes are on different frequencies to allow multiple winches to be used in the same area, so you would not need just the remote but the wireless reciever as well. My suggestion would be to do as shown in this video or contact Badlands to arrange for a replacement assembly.

Keystone Motorsports so after the wires are out of the box connect 2 sets? Also is there any reason not to swap the winch to solenoid cables with the solenoid to battery cables? I would like to mount the solenoid closer to the battery than to the winch. Last question. All things being equal assuming the price difference is $50 after coupons would you rather have the Badland 2500 or 3500. I think my cost difference will be closer to $25-$30 after additional switches and wiring on the 2500.
@KeystoneMotorsports
@KeystoneMotorsports 5 жыл бұрын
You could either pigtail inside the box and run 2 sets (6 wires) out of the box, or run 1 set (3 wires) out of the box to your switch and then run another set of wires off that switch to your 2nd switch. If you want to get fancy, you can get/ make a terminal block to make splitting easier. You can switch the cables around inside the box to have the longer leads to your battery no problem. I've done that and then used large zip ties to hold the solenoid to the winch motor housing itself. Standard price difference between the 2500# and 3500# is $75 before coupons. The wireless adapter for the 3500 is $40 on its own. By the end of the day, the 2500# modified is still about 2/3 the cost of the 3500# without the wireless adapter. So it's really a matter of deciding if
