How to Balance the 70-90mm Freewing EDF unit Part 1

In this video I will go over how to balance the Freewing 12 Blade EDF unit. They supposedly come balanced from the factory but not all are. Also note that if you are running a custom motor like I am, this must be done when you re assemble the unit. This is part 1 of 2.

What is the fit between the fan and the fan adaptor shaft? Is there any play? What is the alignment tolerance with the motor? I have made some calculation based on standard balancing ISO standards and I get nonsense numbers. At this kind of speed, in order to avoid the balancing process after assembly, the fan would need to be aligned with the motor shaft within about 0.00002" which is totally impossible with an assembly of this kind. There is something I don't understand with EDF.

Hi there. Was wondering how to check the fan and motor in my freewing model , without the radio and receiver. If it hasn't got a ubec can I use a normal receiver battery, connect the lipo to the ESC and plug the throttle cable from the ESC into the servo tester. Grateful for any help.

If the plane has a bec built into it then it will work with just a servo tester plugged in to a battery. Thanks for commenting!

Hey man. Any reason why you didn't just add the required weight to the inside of the spinner and permanently epoxy/CA, rather than grind it? Cheers

Psychosix there is no inside on this style fan. It is a solid piece of metal. That is why I do it as I do for this style. Thankfully these aren’t made anymore....

@@gooniac33 ahhhh makes sense. Solid spinner? Luckily mine are the typical cheap plastic type with hollow centres. Cheers for the video :)

So the problem is the spinner cone? Not the fan blades?

The problem could be any part of the assembly, but you can counteract it by balancing it out regardless.
