How to balance wheels using the Snap-on balancer.

How important is the offset distance? I have a similar machine but the measuring device is missing? Does it make a big difference to the final wheel balance results?

The offset distance is just for the machine to know where the wheel itself is positionned. I have the exact machine. The other machines seems to measure the wheel's offset instead.
