As a veteran of 5 weeks mando player, I just worked out a 'bad practise' that helps my small fingers generally. I should have the neck in the V between thumb and index finger. But that leaves the back joint of my fingers very low against the strings. If I do what we call the 'Pipers Grip' on (tenor) Irish whistle, that is essentially the turn of the hand you show here and I also place my thump up against the back of the headstock, mid-point just below the tuners and rotate my hand around, that raises my back finger joints considerably over the strings, and instead of my fingers having to go up, over and down, they just go over and down in a more manageable way. So when I go that and I look at an A major, with pinky (or ring finger) on G6, I don't laugh at the absurdity of the suggestion. Can't pull it off yet, but way closer.
