If you are a new ferret owner this video is for you. If you’ve had ferrets previously, this is valuable content too, you may have forgotten old tricks you used in the past. I did and this content poster reminded me of those tricks which I am excited to implement again. OP: Tip of the hat and kudos to you for this, firstly enjoyable content and secondly the comprehensive tips you learned and have been kind enough to share. You’ll save me hours that I typically spend answering questions; I’ve become the go-to for my friends whom have gotten the ferret bug. Potential Ferret Owners: All that said, ferrets aren’t as easy as a cat, dog, or a bird, that is if you are providing the same level of care across these three breeds mentioned. Ferrets should have their litter boxes and cage cleaned twice a day. They need a few litter boxes in their roaming area. They should be housed in a large multi-tired cage, the environment they are allowed to explore must be proofed because they can, and will, get into any and everything. They are social animals and must be integrated with the family. They are biternal (not sure if that’s spelled right) meaning they are normally up twice a day (dusk and dawn) and should be allowed to roam at those times. I clean their cage when they are exploring at those times. I have two ferrets currently and have never had more trouble jab that at one time. With more you may have to clean the litter box more often. They will often gain interest and resist you messing with their home. So, don’t take ferret ownership lightly, especially if you have only one. Their diet is specific and counterintuitive to any other pet you have owned. For example, peas are deadly to them. In adopted my current ferrets. Initially, they would only eat the freeze dried meat pellets when they were dry as they come out of the bag. This made them drink far more water. Now they love their flash frozen meat pellets rehydrated. I fill their water, they consume only filtered water, to a lower level which keeps it cleaner. Their water is also more clean because they started dipping their pellets in their water dish like raccoons. This made a heck of a mess on the floor as well as the water bowl. They depend on you for all their experience and quality of life experience. All that said, they are very rewarding pets and often do better than you in new experiences. Be well!

I got a ferbear about 5 weeks ago and have given him 7-8 baths at this point with the oat method (placing plain oats into a sock and squeezing it in the water for a natural/safe remedy). He had a raging order when I got him, it’s gotten 75% better but I just could not get the last bit of stink out. I ended up using a natural lemon scented soap from Trader Joe’s that finally removed the odor. Save yourself the time.

Put a towel in the bottom of the tub while bathing. Mine loves to get in the shower with me🙂, so I shampoo her up then. She loves it. I use a heating throw to hold my ferret while she’s drying. It’s one of the only times she is calm enough to hold. Then, she runs around rubbing her little body all over the carpet. Dooking like crazy. I don’t mind the way Olive smells. I just wash her bedding in detergent-free laundry soap. Gave up on litter box, even tho she taught herself to use it. I’ve switched to pee pads. I cut them up & place in corners of her 3-story habitat, and in the corners she likes to use during the times she has run of the house Ferrets are like kittens. So much fun❣️

Thanks so much for watching and commenting! We are working on one regarding ferret diets but (as you may know) it's a complicated and highly debated topic so we want to take our time. As far as overweight ferrets go, I believe we had a vet tech comment on Moose as a baby saying he was borderline 'overweight', but now after years of having ferrets, I really think he just had a combination of baby weight and winter chub.

I also found in my years of having ferrets, that they seem to stink less when they are free roam. Their whiskers also stick out more. We did have to spend time in the cage for the first few months at my mom's & I noticed their whiskers seem to be pressed against their face more, while when they are free roam, the whiskers seem to stick out like a cats. But I got distracted, back to my point. Keeping them in the cage seems to make them stinkier. This is probably b/c of the bedding. I have spent entirely too much $$$ on ferret/cat/dog beds trying to find something they really like. But for the most part, they sleep in different places when out of the cage, while in the cage, they all sleep in the same beds, all day, so part of their scent gland stink rubs onto the bedding. From what I understand, here in the US, ferrets are descented as kits, but they also have scent glands under their eyes, which is why they do that adorable thing where they rub their little faces. That's cleaning & squeezing the scent glands a bit. Wash bedding weekly, if not by weekly, depending on how many ferrets you have. I bought 3 sets of cage liners, 2 off Etsy & the other one is the blue & purple set made by ferret/critter nation. I also bought 2 sets of bedding/hammocks/sleep sacks from Etsy as well as the set that matches the rest of the ferret Nation theme. I recommend having multiple sets. You can make them yourself or help support other ferret owners & even ferret rescues. If you read some of the different stores on etsy, some donate part of what they make from selling the liners & bedding, to ferret rescues. If you're anything like me, you want the cage to match the holiday. So in an attempt to make them less stinky, you can decorate their cage. And every pet store has holiday themed toys & bowels & whatnot, you can buy the bedding in different themes of buy your own fabric to make it yourself. And, my favorite, you can make outfits for them, so if you have company over for Xmas, 1 ferret can have a Santa hat & scarf while another has a sweater or the little dragon costumes for Halloween. They are so fun. But 5 mins after you put the outfit on them, they'll run under the couch & weasel their way out so get your pictures quick! Lol. That was a long rant but it really comes down to the scent glands in their face. Because it's so close to the eyes, removing it isn't practical. The ones in their butts are very similar to skunks, they can spray. So be thankful they don't stink worse than they already do. And again, if you love ferrets, you don't care what they smell like, or you don't notice it anymore. Ferrants don't care what their fuzzies smell like. To me, their roses. Lol
@TheModernFerret4 жыл бұрын
Crystal -thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts! I think the point about the scent glands in the face is really interesting. Do you have an article you can link that I can read about that? I TOTALLY agree that spending a lot of time in the cage, in the same bed will increase their odor. I think buying bedding from passionate ferret owners on Etsy is a great way to support the community! Even if they don't donate to a shelter, they are still contributing positively to the community and that is just awesome. We hope to do a cage tour at some point -but I think we need to get some fun cage items first! Feel free to share the Etsy shops that you like.

Uve inspired me to wash all 4 ferrets today. When I bring ferrets to beach at a lake they walk right into the water on their own. The baths at home tho are not by their choice so they hate me for it. 😀 I happen to love their natural smell. Well, their natural descented smell 😐. I think a lot of ferret owners grow to love their smell. Edit: so I did the bath for them. I was wrong. The girls can’t jump out when a few inches of water is in the tub. A dry tub they can get out of

I have been trying to find out how long a ferret should spend in a bath when it comes time to bathe them. I have found lots of resources saying how often to bathe them but none saying how long they should be spending in the bath. Thank you for all of your helpful videos!

Love the video. My two recent ferrets are terrified of baths, and I look like I was attacked by a mountain lion. lol But seriously, none of the ferrets I’ve had over the last 20+ years ever panicked like this. One is only 5 months old and recently purchased, and the other is a rescue of which the vet said is about 2 to 2 1/2 years. His fur was, and is, extremely yellow (He’s an albino), and he was , and still is, scratching a good bit. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong with his skin. There didn’t seem to be anything I could do to calm them down so just dried them off and let them calm down and burrow in soft towels. The youngest I used only water, and the other I used a little ferret shampoo, which I won’t do anymore. So what do you suggest that I can do so they’re not terrified of baths? I’ve never had one that was afraid, so this is new. Lastly, my albino (Fable) was a rescue/surrender and appears to not have ever had a bath. I’m at a loss and don’t want to traumatize them again. I am also only able to use the sink to bathe them due to physical limitations that make it impossible to kneel.
@DJPOLONESHKA3 жыл бұрын
Etsuko (My lovely Ferret) does like nor hate the bath time. I clean her in the sink under running water... I check with her the temperature she likes and she is calm. She is like "ok, if I stay calm we will get over it quickly" But she starts to escape if I take to long to clean her 😂 . . The reason I use the sink and not the bathtub is that the bathtub is her "punishment corner" (Easy to clean if she poops and she can't get out)...(+the sink is higher so I can clean her without stressing my back) Though she is a good girl and the "punishment corner " Was used only like 5 times and only when she was still learning, she wasn't put to the corner for 3-4 years now 😅. Oh and just to calm you guys down, it wasn't harmful or anything. As the experts advise, when she would missbehave I grabbed her by the backside of the neck (like cats) and keep her on the ground saying she did bad (it's actually what mother ferrets do as well) and then she was put for few minutes to the corner.

A video on how to furnish a good cage for ferrets and on methods to provide them with stimulation and safe spaces to climb and explore would be cool. Also the tube system in your backround seems super interesting, a closer look at that would be very interesting.

Great suggestions! We plan to do a cage video very soon. And yes, stimulation/enrichment is so important. We will start looking into those topics :) And hopefully do a tube video soon!!

Mine love to just shower with me and play and I pick one up at a time wash them and the wife dries them. I use baby shampoo and they love it and they don't smell at all. But I have 8 free range ferrets and they shower every 2 months and in winter months they get a real bath with oatmeal in a sock..

Hello. Help me please how do I persuade my parents to let me but a ferret for Christmas. Also if I bathe it I'll just sit my self in the bath as well 😌
