Depends on what your exact passwords is and what kind of symbol you're putting in how. If you replace an E with a 3, that's literally the first thing they'll check in a Dictionary attack, but if you're having a question mark in the middle of a word that shouldn't have a question mark in it, that's effective.

Just get unique passwords for some sites like email, bank account, steam, some forums you at least slightly give a damn about and that's it. For the rest I don't even use my real email address just some disposable ones I find on google. And I get notices about unauthorised logins to some of my accounts which means that indeed the password got leaked somewhere but no harm done as the important stuff is protected by unique passwords.

3 Things you might wanna look into.. 1) Don't have a notepad file with the word password in it, doesn't matter if it's the name of the file. If the file has pass or password in it.. it'll get scanned if you get hacked. 2) Don't mention the full name of the site in the file. Having "T:" be twitter is sufficient. Abbreviate in an uncommon way. 3) Your clipboard can be logged if you have malware on your computer, but I think it's at least more uncommon(speculation) than giving your pass away by typing them out. I use this system for my credit card number. I have a huge matrix of numbers and 2 halves of my credit card number hidden in it. I had an RNG bot design the matrix around my credit card numbers so it wouldn't stand out.

You could even workaround those problems by having a common last character, which you wouldn't save in the file and add manually. so you can save the password without the common last character in a file, even if it says twitter, nobody knows the last character. for example "Ca5^&ESUzy$B2v3xT" is the password, you would save "Ca5^&ESUzy$B2v3x" in the files, and copy those into the login forms, and then typing "T" to complete the password.

The biggest factor in whether you'll get hacked or not is: "Are you interesting?". Malware won't discriminate, but hackers do. If you go to a lake with an abundance of mosquitoes around you don't run around like a madman swatting mosquitoes. This defense doesn't work well for celebrities like youtubers, but it's the best defense for your average joe/jane. Did you spark controversy in a forum? Did you brag about having money? Unencrypted text files can scanned through in a few seconds. 2) Of course it will when they have a hold of the file, what it's supposed to do is to not hit the radar in the first place. And if you were really paranoid (or cautious as someone worth being hacked) then use password managers but cypher the passwords that are stored there by having a website that generates random characters. Say your first code (because it's not the final password yet) was 3jM+ then assume the random characters in the first time were a=\ b=w c=a... -=n and so on (speaking of capital and small case latin letters, special daily-used characters like ";#)@?!- and numbers (Arabic to be sure, though I don't remember using Hindu-Arabic numbers made a difference)) Randomly pick a character you used, say M, look at what random character generation assigned for M. (Re-generate character another time and change whatever random character in your code to the assigned one (say your history was leaked and that opened page at that time containing that list of randomly-generated characters were recovered, the hacker would know the list, but if you regenerate many times and sometimes you chose random characters to be changed then say you regenerated 7 times and the character paired with M, respectively was: % v * B z 3 9 (ignore spaces) then even if the hacker caught the password from password manager (which is 3jM+ ) then he/she wouldn't know, if you do it manually and not on laptop, if you assigned for M an % v * B z 3 or 9. And so you would have these password in password manager, and a paper containing decryption keys (say you assigned z for M, 7 for + and so on) (or a book if you wish to assign a different decryption keys for every password). So even if that hacker had access to your code, then he/she would have to either guess through all combinations of using decryption keys, or have your paper AND passwords in password manager, which is unlikely, especially if password manager supported reporting a hacking attempt and reported to all registered websites to temporarily block log in attempts from such entered passwords. I thought of physical communication and giving as least info on electronic devices as possible and so, meeting on common places is only applicable in big cities and it would take large balance for agents to be at hundred or thousands of cities to be feasible around the globe, so I think using papers on physical mails would be the better choice, assuming that storing used mailing company is physically a safe place.
