If I'm not mistaken it comes forth from Plato's Socrates: "All I know is that I know nothing". It is however not something that was explicitly mentioned, but it could be seen as a summary of a story of Socrates visiting the Oracle (you can just Google the quote to get more information). However in Plato's work this idea applied to "a wise man", not a genius. My first instincts would say there is a difference between the two, i.e. a genius might not be wise and a wise man might not be a genius, yet I honestly have no idea. But we shouldn't just assume they're one and the same.

This is why I've pursued a career of working with children. They're such a huge source of inspiration, and they allow me to work with various aspects of creativity, phycology and philosophy, every single day. Children are so unapologetically honest, always communicating with their hearts, and echoing their unfiltered desires. It's unfortunate that most people leave this aspect of themselves behind, as they get older.

1. " We are the ones we have been waiting for". I love this line by Alice Walker. Wouldn't it be great if we all could have such self confidence? The only reason why we don't have it is this: We desperately want to be loved and we think that for this, we should really be something " special". Certainly something " other than" who we already are! If only we could say these two things, we could lead a totally different life: " I am enough and I am worthy of love" . Because then we wouldn't be so scared of seeming like a weirdo or failing. We would do much more and dare much more. Instead of being full of fear and anxiety, we would be full of enthusiasm and curiosity. This is a choice we still can make. 2. I wanted to recommend three books for this: -Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, by Carole Dweck -Daring Greatly, How The Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms The Way we Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brene Brown - Big Magic, Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elisabeth Gilbert If you want to get to know the writers first, all three of them have great TED Talks you could watch. 3. Ken Robinson says that every single one of us is a unique moment in history. If you want to honor the value of every single human being who has ever lived, you couldn't say it better! There is only ONE you and in a few decades you won't be here anymore... So we must really value our only experience in this world and take our own thoughts seriously! 4. One person I love, who surely did this is a very beloved poet from Istanbul: Orhan Veli Kanik ( 1914- 1950 ). It is such a pitty that he died so young. Here is what he dared to do: ( I added it as a reply to this comment )
@bolivar17897 жыл бұрын
Ottoman poets that came before him followed the 600 years old tradition in poetry: It was mainly for the " elite" to understand, always talking about their endless sufferings either to reach God or to find eternal love. But suddenly, Orhan Veli surprised everyone by telling us about the " corns on the feet of an old" man in a poem! He was criticized very harshly for that. They all hated him. They accused him of being totally disrespectful of such a long and strict tradition. Well yes, in another poem he also said that : " he would like to be a fish in a Raki bottle"! So turning back to the corns; Orhan Veli could touch everyone's hearts with this poem and tell them something about Süleyman Efendi, an old man who could be anybody from any poor neighbourhood in Istanbul... EPITAPH He suffered from nothing in the world The way he suffered from his corns: He didn't even feel so badly About having been created ugly. Though he wouldn't utter the Lord's name Unless his shoe pinched, He couldn't be considered a sinner either. It's a pity Süleyman Efendi had to die. And the following poem is so tender too... I guess I would also have to be " a fish in a raki bottle" in order to get so drunk as to look at my left hand or at any right handed person's left hand and feel so much compassion: MY LEFT HAND I got drunk again I thought of you My clumsy hand. My pitiful hand.. Thank you for this wonderful lesson and for the great animation! Show less REPLY

Besides he is the best " teacher of life" one can imagine:-) His entire work has a life changing quality. You can read his books, listen to his TED talks and other talks, and watch his documentaries too. He has another youtube channel where you can find those documentaries. Just search for the one called " Status Anxiety", to find the channel. If you want to start with one book by him, I would highly recommend " The Consolations of Philosophy". If you search for his name on Itunes you can find interviews with him on several podcasts too. My favourite one is the " On Being with Krista Tippett" podcast, where he talks about his latest book "The Course of Love". That's the most meaningful and profound conversation I have ever heard about love. He also has a speech on love in youtube. To find it just search for: " On Love, Alain de Botton, Sydney Opera House". Many greetings and best wishes:-)

Hello Benjamin. I don't mean to offend you, but it seems to me that as a perfectionist, you should know that this is really NOT the "perfect" way to correct someone's mistake. Not being kind, where you could easily be, is a greater mistake than forgetting one letter in a word. I am just saying...
@billlupin83457 жыл бұрын
Ah, but was his goal to correct? It seems to me he was trying to establish intellectual dominance; sorta like what you were doing right there, but less passive aggressively. The satisfaction of anonymously putting someone in their place outweighs any possible direct benefit of being "kind" to them, I'm sure you can relate...
@bolivar17897 жыл бұрын
Bill, following your logic, you are doing exactly what you are criticising. I have no intentions to " establish intellectual dominance" over anybody. That's a malicious interpretation. Because it is not a big deal to know that we all can be kind. So reminding someone of it, does not show that you are superior or anything. He surely knows that too. As long as we do it in a friendly way, yes we can all correct and help each other to become better and be grateful to each other for that.

Most geniuses are often undervalued for the effort they actually put in. People who master at particular hobbies/fields are often envied because they seem to be people who had better lives or had "natural talent", and so if we wish to become like them, we realise how much time it actually takes to reach their level, and quitting is an easy solution. It is daunting to put in allot of effort for something small that will give you a good appearance. In reality, geniuses excel in their fields out of passion and a little bit of childish attitude (they dont over think things,they like what they do, so they do), they do it NOT to look impressive. The world's best artists put in more hours than they have been at school. The best scientists have 50 times more papers than the ones you know of theirs (have you read one published paper/report? it surprised me how sophisticated and long they are, yet I dont know anyone who reads them like books). You cannot do what they do without loving it, you just cannot. It is easier to become an average at all than a master of one, because to master something requires almost an exponentially increasing effort for each stages of feedback. A Genius is someone who only cared about what they liked and saw a happy end to the difficult road they take. Geniuses are always pushing themselves and are persistent, pushing in an extra 2 hours a day for piano, pushing in an extra 1 hour a day for language training, etc. Also there is this important concept called Compound Interest, you probably heard it related to money, but the idea applies to reality. Very often, the more effort you put in (enough to make you above average at that particular field) then the more likely you will gain better opportunities to improve. 2 examples: say there is a pond of goldfish and they are all the same size, you feed them daily, so theoretically each should get the same amount of food. However by chance, one goldfish was born slightly bigger than the rest, then it will have a higher chance of competing against the other fish for the food, thus allowing it to eat more and therefore grow even bigger. Another example is a kid who starts his first sport. If the kids practices with his dad soccer at home more than most other kids, then he will have the upper hand at practice after school, then once he scores and becomes on of the best players in the team, this will give him positive feedback and makes him feel happy to continue playing, not only that, the coach will give him more field time and thus even improving his skill more. I remember when i was 14, i was in a Rugby team but i was one of the worst, unfortunately that led me to get less field time, so i didnt improve which didnt help me, so this compound interest falls both ways.

My observing is that sensitive caring and generous people will have more difficulties to ever reach genial considered levels. They are often too dispersed through their emphatic being. A narcissistic self centered character, with their deep need of constantly admiring are probably more like tô became genius. And then there are few others: "ewigen Kinder", they never left the children geniality because they never really grown up. Last but not least: that being sensitive, empathic and generous shows a kind of tremendous capacity that could be considered geniality. I think only then our society would turn better ;)

So true. Genius finds true value from ordinary things. They have abilities to 1) view things from wide perspectives (and be comfortable with it) 2) constantly project an idea to the future by asking 'how much impact is this going to bring about?' Being a genius is about self-control and clever management as much as having an acute mind from birth.

Eh, this video is also a little vague as to what "genius" actually is. My own view is that genius comes down to a few key traits: 1. Creativity -- that is to say, the ability to combine previously unrelated ideas into a new idea. (I think this is the trait the video is trying to arrive at, but doesn't quite get there.) 2. The ability to communicate -- being able to express your new ideas in a way that is simple, concrete, and captivating. 3. Persistence -- following through with an idea until its conclusion, or perfecting your technique through continual personal improvement. 4. A bit of luck -- after all, it's other people who decide if you're the genius, not you. If your ideas find the right people at the right time, they will take root and prosper; but that comes down to luck.

and yet, genius is much more than just going along with your ideas (supposing you even have them, which is not an inconsequential detail) ....the world of music is abundant of examples that would baffle anyone, from the expert musician to the neuroscientist....many illustrious musicians would hear another musician by chance, having an hunch about the other's worth, examine the music, and proclaim the other musician a genius. Schumann said so about Brahms and Chopin, for example. And someone like Schumann was extremely hard to impress, as he was a very experienced and imaginative composer himself and an experienced and unforgiving music critic. These people didn't just say something nice because they 'liked the music', to appear nice, or to do someone a favour, but because they found things in the other composer's music that would be impossible to learn or teach, and that they found truly baffling. Haydn proclaimed Mozart a genius, Rossini said the same of Beethoven, Paganini of Berlioz....for any of them, to say that somebody else was a genius, must have been like an exceptional event that only occurred once during their lifetime. It would not have been any different than for someone like Schopenhauer to say of someone else being the greatest living philosopher. The problem is that by 'genius' many people think 'talent', but talent and genius are not the same thing. (Learned that from Schopenhauer's writings, and I completely agree with his view.). I prefer to liken talent to silver and genius to platinum. Silver is valuable, you don't find it everywhere, but platinum is much, much rarer. Jerome Cardan, in his autobiography, wrote that he would get 'powerful, sudden flashes of light in the mind'. One thing is certain: the genius would not give a crap about what other people think about his or her work. No genius was a weak minded pack follower. But not being weak minded or not being a pack follower is not necessarily a sign of genius. It's like originality....you can be 'original' and still be crap. The genius is not an attention seeker, he doesn't 'try' to be original and he doesn't 'try' to not follow the pack. For them, it's all inborn. In fact, for the genius, fame and attention is more of an hindrance than a help. I don't know of any living geniuses other than Stephen Hawking. I think they are extremely rare.

While this ignores the reality of different types of brain stuctures, based on genes and early environment, it's definitely true that most humans have far more useful minds than they often are aware of, due to repressive tactics by (mostly well meaning, but confused) parents, teachers, governments, employers, and other influencial forces on kids. When we encourage kids to explore things in their own way, and come to their own ideas and answers (which may be different from mainstream ones) even with things that are often called "facts", then we get the opportunity for thinking things that no one else has thought before, some of which turn out to be exceptionally valuable. Also, Bucky Fuller said my favorite quote about genius: "I'm not a genius, I'm just a tremendous bundle of experience."
