Ahoj! I'm Jen, Native Californian, living in Prague, Czech Republic for the past 9 years with my husband and our rescue dog Tobik. One fateful night, we drank a bottle of wine, threw a dart at the map, and bought one-way tickets to move our entire lives to the center of Europe! Everyday we learn something new, about Czech people, Czech culture, Czech history, Czech language and how to battle the Czech bureaucracy. Dream Prague started as a place to share what we learned with other foreigners living here.

Will there be an episode about trams? I saw americans scared of them before. "The evil thing which took our freedom to drive automobile everywhere!" And it can be quite historical too, since we had trams back in the day when they were pulled by horses. And ecological, because before everyone had V8 engine, it meant one horse pulled the weight of 20 passengers, if you replaced cobblestone with railways. Same stays truth for fuel efficiency. And it is an opportunity to visit tram museum in Prague.

I actually do carry a photo of Jan Masaryk in my wallet so I was like Yay! until I saw the mistake. Nevermind. They were both cool in their own particular ways. Jan was more of a YOLO guy, partying and drinking and having good time while still being a wise and witty man. His dad was more of an intellectual, also much more religious and ascetic. Of the two, I've always liked Jan more. I would've loved to meet him!

Well, you can report your lost health insurance card whenever you like (if you did not went to the police about it), since nobody else knows about it. I once forgot where I put my wallet for more than a month and I have survived :-) However, from general point of view, it is better to report lost IDs promptly for your own protection, especially if you are certain your wallet was stolen.

I think the website is a handy thing, but nothing official. Actually, when you need any kind of doctor, you just have to go to your insurance company and they're required to find you a doctor that would take you as a patient. Usually used for cases, when you can't find a doctor that's taking new patients...

@@miroslavantonin9354 Strictly speaking, the ID card itself is not mandatory, but it greatly helps if the police wants to control your identity. If you're unable (or refuse) to provide a valid document proving your identity, you can be taken to the police station and held up to 4 hours so they can actually verify your identity. If you don't provide documents or still refuse, the district attorney or a judge can authorize the police to take your fingerprints and photos. If you refuse to have those taken, you can be fined up to 3 750 € and risk three months in jail. Once the verification is done, they give you a police report :)

My wife often complains that it is so hard to dig up information about goverment services and that usually people are confused because many have contradicting rules. She is often surprised how easy is to find similar information for the US system (if you were an immigrant, you would know that USCIS requires notification of change of adress 10 days after the move) and how easy is to submit this information (in person, mail, online or by legal representative). But in Czech they like their notarized stamps...

No need to sweat too much about that HI card. If something happens to you, you will be treated, and then they will ask if the bill will be sent to you or the insurance company. What matters is if you are insured at the time when it happens, not if you have that card on you. It is also quite often enough to just know your insurance number that is on the card... be sure to have it on you if you know you are going to the doc´s, though. Generally speaking though, it is a good idea to have some kind of ID with your photo on it with you, and that HI card does not take much space either.

Foreigners have been denied health care service here before (sadly even in the ER which is a big no no), so they should definitely carry their cart to be on the safe side. I am actually glad to hear that there is such a course. Many things come naturally to people born in the country but can be very hard on immigrants.

I did not know that to behave decently and intelligently on the tram, bus or metro is a Czech specialty. Can there be a civilized country where the boarding passengers don´t let the arriving ones to get off first? Is there a country where a healthy young person will not let an old grandmother or pregnant woman sit down?

Doporučuju vám raději ani nezjišťovat, jak nějaké tradice slušného chování vznikli :D I apologize for the Czech language.
@breznik1197
@breznik1197 2 жыл бұрын
A princip fronty by jim dnes už mohl být povědomý i z IT.

Totally off topic but.. when I heard Czech weapons were going to Ukraine I thought there was something I should remember and then it hit me that Czechoslovakia was one of the few nations willing to provide weapons to Israel after WW2. Made me wonder if it was purely for profit or perhaps a bit of ideology. I know almost nothing about the Czech republic.

This is a question to which there is no clear answer. Both and something more. Profit has certainly played a role as it always has, but I would say that rather than ideology, which is certainly in there as well, it's a completely irrational sense of a certain kinship. Anyway, the Czechia is close to Israel for some reason and always has been. Even Tomas Garique Masaryk was close to the Jews, and he was later followed by Václav Havel. A Slovak Jew developed the krav maga. Before he went to what was then Palestine, he was winning czechoslovak national boxing matches and international gymnastics matches. Before the war, he protected the Jewish quarter from the rising Slovak Nazis. So there is a concrete belonging. Someone we can connect with. Someone who connects our two/three of our nations. Perhaps it is also that this nation must fight for its place on earth. It's a small nation, surrounded by enemies, just like we were before WWII. We were the last democracy in central Europe surrounded by the Nazi and Soviet ideology. While they were Jews surrounded by Muslim ideology. Or, we wanted to help them in their struggle because we knew all too well the price a nation must pay when it is abandoned by all and forced to surrender. Like its happened to us in Mnichov. Or our Islamophobia, which has been ingrained in us since the Habsburgs fought the Ottomans, and a kind of notion that the Central European states are the guardians of Europe against the Muslims, plays a role in this. Although this idea is much stronger among the Poles and Hungarians. Anyway, we have always been close to Israel and it probably has nothing to do with rational reasons or a particular ideology. But who knows.

Actually, big politics and reality of the Cold war was at play here. After the WW2, large part of Israel's population was on the leftish part of the political spectrum and the leadership of the Soviet Union (read Stalin) hoped the newborn Israel could become another communistic state and, as such, become its satellite. But the Soviets didn't want to be directly involved so the armament program of Israel was sort of delegated to Czechoslovakia. Later, when SU realized Israel chose democratic trajectory and would not end up in its orbit, it ordered Czechoslovakia to stop the program (but at that point most of the ordered stuff was already delivered.) This change of policy was afterwards also reflected in many political processes during 1950s in the Soviet Union and its satellite states where the antisemitic card was played to a degree. In Czechoslovakia, the process with Rudolf Slánský in 1952 is a classic example of this. I won't cry for Slánský, he was one of the principal builders of the communistic regime in Czechoslovakia and was co-responsible for the violence it produced so it can be seen as karma, but many innocent people were victims of the said process as well and were executed with him. Stalin's purges at its best.
