Believe in your abilities, be open to change and ideas and listen to your team. Be okay knowing that managers can still make mistakes, but can learn from them!

Thank you. I am a supervisor, but the company's lab does not have a manager, therefore the CEO held me responsible for the lab, but I am not qualified. I do a ton of research, which I love coz I learn new things. Oh and I agree, saying "NO" can be really hard especially because I've know my co-workers since we were all in highschool. I appreciate your thoughts into managing a lab.

Are you a CLS? What education and training did you have before you accepted this task? How long did it take you to move up? There’s not much information online about lab management, I’m currently in the interview process for an assistant lab manager position.

A CLS as in a clinical lab scientist for a clinical lab in a hospital setting? No, I am in agriculture for microbiology and genetics. Graduated in 2014 with my science degree, took extra microbiology and genetics courses. I also have experience with the biology and genetics I did while in college. I also have my degree in nursing. Hired in this department 2016. Was asked to supervise and train pretty quickly after that, not even a year. I was made into a manager end of 2018 into 2019. I used to work as a lab intern in high school into my early college years in this same industry, so that helped. This is not the case for every lab you go to. No there isn’t much info on lab management, I agree with you. From my personal experience, this partly has to do with the fact that they are separate in ways. You go to school for what subject you decide to study in college. You can also go to school for management, but there isn’t a specific degree in college for example “lab management in blank”. You learn the skill sets of management mostly with experience and time. From what I have seen mostly, you a trained and get experience before coming a manager in the lab. If you are hired straight out with a Bachelors as a manager, you will probably be required to get certain certs. Being a lab manager combines so many things, it’s not completely the same as being a restaurant manager for example. In my opinion, it’s better training, and moving up the ranks to becoming a manager because you get to understand the lab, projects and follow of things. You also build your skills as well. Again, this all depends on what lab you go to, not all are the same. Hope this made sense, let me know if you have any more questions. Good luck I hope you get the assistant job it will be great experience!

I’m actually a CLS with a BS in Biology... I definitely agree that technical skills make you a better manager. Why did you switch from RN? There are programs at my job that provide funding for CLS to RN due to shortage. Which do you enjoy the most?

@@vispandex Very awesome, you can go far with those credentials and building experience! I am actually switching to as an RN. I always wanted something in healthcare, but I didn't know Nursing was what I actually wanted to do until later. I love talking to people and caring for them. I always loved science and research because it was analytical, and I was constantly building on my knowledge. It honestly came easy to me when I was in the lab. I think after doing lab for a while now I want a new challenge!

Hi Bronte, I've just seen your channel and I listened to your wonderful tips. I just got a call today offering me to work as a lab manager for the first time, but I already accepted a job offer as a medical technologist in a hospital. I have a bachelor's degree in Biology, Master's in Biotechnology with physiology minor, then studied a post bachelor's degree in clinical science with over 4 years of experience, certificate in public health from HMS, really don't know what to chose now ... Any tips and recommendations, please? Thank you so much.

Hi, I love the video! I'm not a lab manager, but I'm a lab assistant. How can I be a better lab assistant and make the manager's life easier?
@brontefletcher23
@brontefletcher23 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! My advice would be to remain vigilant, flexible and organized. It helps me when my assistants do the "little jobs" that I is not immediatley on my mind, like cleaning, keeping organized, prepping materials, logging data and checking in with each other. Lab technicians and assistants are so vital to keep the lab running smoothly, and efficiently. If you feel like you can handle more duties as you work on your time management skills, don't be afraid to ask your manager if there is anything more you can do to help, or any added tasks they can think of that they can give you to ease their work load.
