Very insightful, Bronte! Nice to meet you. Subbed! I was a Research Associate (not assistant) in biotech with a M.Sc in Biomedical Science, before taking on a PhD 3 years ago, in order to go back to biotech on scientist level. Greetings from Belgium!

There are professional master degrees in laboratory management, rare to find but they do exist. It's a combination of the business aspect of a lab and the lab work itself. I'm enrolling next year after finishing my Bs in CLS.

can you please breakdown the differences between lab tech I, lab tech II and lab tech III? also, what differences are there between lab techs/RA/lab managers in academia vs industry?
@brontefletcher233 жыл бұрын
Levels of lab techs are based on experience. Lab tech I are usually entry level, while level II and III techs have a higher skill level. You will probably be seeing these levels perform tasks that are of greater skill level. They may also be participating in research projects on top of their usual activities. The term research assistant and lab technician are used interchangeably at times. A research assistant can be found helping in research projects, clerical and administrative duties. Lab technicians perform perform a variety of tasks in the lab setting, while maintaining equipment, sterility and keeping the lab organized. Lab managers oversea the lab entirely. They are in charge of understanding what projects are occurring, ensuring quality standards, reviewing protocols, staffing, and securing that the lab is running efficiently.

What is above a lab manager in academia? Does promotion end there?
@brontefletcher23 Жыл бұрын
Depends on the company and how you look at it. you can move forward in being a director or shareholder in a company

I am a lab tech now but my friend told me about a lab management position but I feel WAY UNDER QUALIFIED because I don’t have a college degree.
@brontefletcher233 жыл бұрын
Hmm this can be a tricky situation, but I do believe those without a college degree can work their way up in the system. I always tell my technicians if they want to be considered for something higher to never give up

hi there bronte! I'm an upcoming university student and majoring in chemistry i just wanted to ask somethings are there laboratory jobs where even with lots of experience or if you worked for a long time you wouldn't end up being a manager or something like a boss/leader i guess ? or like an advanced position but still your more focus on i dunno research or science or something more technical like that rather then managing people ? its just that i dont see myself as the type of person that would fit him to be a manager or you know the one who inspires people i guess lol i guess im more of a support sorry if this sounds stupid XD its more that my goal is actually to be a scientist in R&D at a company or something like government research im okay if that dosent happen though as long as im in something more technical its just i dont think im the maneger type of person ^^' but if it happens ill just do it lol
@brontefletcher232 жыл бұрын
So you are asking if there are positions available other than being a manager?
@darkmage40502 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly like dealing more with science rather then managing people if this makes sense ?

@brontefletcher233 жыл бұрын
Hi, I am unsure about a good book about laboratory technician jobs. The internet has some good advice on that. I don't think you have to buy a book about lab technician jobs. If you want a lab technician I would apply to labs around you, a lot of the time they have a job title "lab technician or entry level technician" jobs out there.
