Man, these videos are great. I self-published my debut Fantasy novel, The Brewmaster's Nephew in September and have been struggling with the concept of success and what that means to me. I finally decided that if I can just break even on production cost and sell a few hundred copies (mostly to people in my community) that's good enough, and what is important is hammering away at my craft and continuing to create new stories and build on the fantasy world ive created. Your videos are helping to remind me of that, and they are like chicken noodle soup for my soul. Best wishes from British Columbia, Canada!

The meaning of success is very personal. Also, you might be successful in one way and not in another. We have a 5k+ audience of readers/listeners online, but we often struggle to bring food on the table and that's all our parents and close friends know and care about. Only one person we know personally has bothered to read our novels. But writing brings us joy. My point is: don't let others define what success means. Congrats on publishing your first novel! You should be proud! Don't feel embarrassed about self-publishing. This way, you keep all the rights, and no publishing company can temper with your content. Traditional publishing is not what it used to be. I know enough writers who were asked to pay a four-figure sum to get published by a traditional publisher ("for the marketing"). These ‘big name’ publishers play it safe so they only accept what chases after current trends, and they can be quite meddlesome when it comes to your content. Wish you many more novels and a lot of joy writing!

I think I just want something out there that someone will like. I don't need NYT approval, or a Hugo award or anything, but if i don't get it out there i'll regret it. I don't think i want this as a job, just maybe something out there.

This is a great goal. Do you have a specific someone in mind? That might help with the writing, too. You can write it just for them!

I want to write a book but the subject is frowned upon in my language or the people who speak my language and i want to do it in English but i don't know how to start , my English isn't that good i learned it through movies and songs
@tjsmith5276Ай бұрын
Maybe write it in your language and then have it translated into English. You might be able to find ways to translate it online.
