Different attitudes, approaches and methods of animal training to this day vary depending on the mental state and underlying intention of humans. It changes over time and as we discover new, more effective ways we need to bear in mind the saying “The past is a very different country. They do things differently there” Sadly a very few, specific groups of people just have serious issues and need to control that means they deliberately set animals up to fail with absurd and unfair expectations. It allows them to feel justified in dishing out punishment and abuse that follows. I learned as an 8yr old kid that the worst, most dangerous thing you can be is someone a horse neither likes, trusts or wants anywhere near based on previous meetings. I saw exactly what that meant in reality when a nasty bastard farrier was almost kicked to death by a shire horse who had an old score to settle. I also learned how dogs will follow, protect and do more or less anything if you don't expect or force the issue. I now own and train / help with rehab and re-training of border collies being the the most fascinating breed that demands respect and for the most part you cannot force, bully and abuse. When abusive trainers or handlers are challenged with asking for a simple behaviour and without touching, seething, shouting or threatening they very often have no idea where to even start because all they do know and have ever done is throw their weight around. There's no skill whatsoever in using force and fear to have animals do what we want. We've done that for hundreds of years and we know it has immediate effects. That's not training, it's merely teaching them how to avoid being punished and assures they will grow to dislike and distrust you by the day. When things were going right and training was still in its infancy at SW, being an orca trainer must have been the best job on Earth. I don't care for nor support captivity overall but in the same breath I don't have this blinkered notion SW is the devil either. It's a shame they're still behaving like petulant teenagers having the world's longest sulk mind you but the skills, experience, knowledge and most superb craft SW trainers mastered I would hate to see lost forever. The two opposing sides even with entirely opposing views can still find a way to meet in the middle.

Animal training get a bad rap sometimes. I think of all the good that people like this guy have done to educate us all about animals. I have no problem with places like Seaworld, etc. Good for everyone.

Because dogs and cats would do so well if "freed" into city streets and wilderness...Just imagine some Toy Poodle or even a Golden Retriever encountering coyotes, or hunting enough wild critters to survive, or even being able to avoid being run over by cars, or live longer than a few years before they die in cold winters or of rabies. Cats being released into the wild is not good for the birds, either (or good for the cat, they don't live that long). And if anyone tried to liberate my dog, they would regret it. But I do have serious doubts that Orcas can live happy lives in concrete tanks, even large ones. Orcas are not domesticated pets; they are huge, fierce predators; they need more room...

Humans are vile. In 1916 a circus elephant dubbed "Murderous Mary" was shot then hung from a crane in front of some 2,500 people in retaliation for killing a trainer. The only consolation is that she was shot and killed by the circus owner before they strung her up but that still doesn't alter the fact a baying mob demanded her execution and the law allowed it.

Again, about the pony tail.... That's just crock!!! People who were there, eye witnesses - who aren't or haven't ever been paid by Sea World - have stated he pulled her in by the arm, not the pony tail!!

How many zoo animals do uou see in concrete cages? You keep these orcas in plain cement cages instead of a natural setting.
