Honestly for me guys I do find it hard to distinguish certain kpop group members from each other since almost all of them look the same. Especially if you're not into that certain group or if you're new to a certain group and trying to familiarize each members. But there are groups also who have distinguishable face from each other so it's easy to identify them in a group photo.

I dont really care about plastic surgery. I mean, people hate other people who are "ugly". So, they have to get surgery..And when they get surgery, they will get hated *again* for being "unnatural" and they say that that specific person was more beautiful before. Isn't that messed up? Being Korean myself, I also went through self identity issues growing up and wanting to look more western because that was what was more worldly accepted as far was what was considered to be beautiful. Korea needs to be just more into embracing individual beauty instead of being so hyper critical and focused on perfection or a next beauty trend. I have gotten nothing done, even though I wanted to growing up. I’m actually happy I decided not to get any plastic surgery. It would be nice if Korea would start focusing on how to enhance your own beauty instead of how and what we can do to look like everyone else. It’s nice to know there are other Korean women out there that have not decided to undergo surgery and is an advocate of natural beauty.

Full disclosure: I’m a cosmetic and surgical dermatologist, so my career obviously impacts my POV. As for as plastic surgery and noninvasive procedures go, there is a huge difference between doing these to change your looks to fit a trend or standard as opposed to enhancing your natural features to be more confident or refine your natural beauty without trying to fit some predetermined mold. Even for Kim Go Eun, she has had a few minor tweaks to her looks after landing roles that eventually caused her popularity to start skyrocketing. She didn’t do anything that changed her natural beauty, it was just refined, which given her career isn’t surprising. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this. She is still defying the standard of beauty and confidently embodying her own personal features. Having those few tweaks doesn’t lessen the impact she has in defying the normal standard. She is still identifiably herself, refinements or not.

The problem with preoccupation of societal beauty standards is the loss of appreciation for how stunning diversity can be. The constant striving to have the same features will inevitably result in homogenous looks throughout society. Uniqueness should be celebrated, because sameness is bland. Often it's the flaws that make one unique & memorable.

True. Just my opinion but the Korean shows drama and movies my sister and nieces watch they look a lot a like to me that my my sister and nieces can’t believe there are times I can’t tell them apart. Yeah, it's funny how these "flaws" can become beauty standards themselves. Ancient chinese makeup has a lot of facial markings that mimic scars and skin imperfections because a favoured/beautiful woman had it. Or take Marilyn Monroe in western media, the spot over her lip is iconic (where I live this type of spot is literally called a 'beauty spot').

It is very understandable though about white skin, because Filipinos were colonized for so long by White People leaving an impression that they are the standard. That is why Filipinos were confused. But of course, more and more Filipinos started loving our 'healthy' skin. We have more melanin than those with fair skin because we are in a country where we need melanin to protect our skin from the sun.

The most important for aesthetics is that the facial (and body) features are in harmony and all the features creating a pleasing look all together combined - no matter what those features are. Just a few years ago there was a trend about having "bunny" teeth and there's also about having a gummy smile , also there was the head shape trends which I find weird. Though I think the trends these days weren't as restricted than that to what it was years ago and varies more.

I just noticed that the beauty standards in Korea are just too high that it's too much to handle for me because I am not in to be beautiful in the eyes of others, I just wanna be me hahaha. In my opinion on this video, just for me, I think self-acceptance and self-awareness is the key to not having insecurities. Because if you know to yourself that you don't have what others have, and accepted it I think, you could not be easily swayed or be affected by the social stereotypes. It is on the mindset of a person...being yourself, being as the real you, and the natural you are prettier than the beauty standard by the society. It is just like simplicity is beauty. Beauty comes from within Myra-e charot parang PH care lang ni ate Moy.

The older you get, the truer this is. Physical appearance is so much less important than connecting with someone on an intellectual and emotional level. And it is so true that confidence and self-love shine through more than physical beauty. Just don’t tell anyone I said this since I’m a cosmetic dermatologist lol… but that should give an idea as to just how important accepting, knowing, and loving yourself are compared to meeting societal beauty standards.

Living in South Korea can be challenging, as it often feels like you have to compromise your own identity to conform to the unrealistic beauty standards that society imposes. While plastic surgery might seem like a quick fix, it doesn't address the underlying issues. Unfortunately, societal pressures and expectations can feel overwhelming, and it's disheartening to witness the extent to which they affect people.

I mean sure, if you say 'I had plastic surgery' people wouldn't say 'omg really? really? wowwww interestingg' and act as if it's such a big deal. Maybe it's not considered such a huge deal to have plastic surgery, but most people don't have plastic surgery. This is literally as dumb as thinking that every American owns a gun and used it before or something. Do they? No. NO ONE around me had plastic surgery and no one even considers having it, thinking every Korean has it is the stupidest thought ever, idols don't reflect Koreans, idols are idols.

I remember having a Korean friend in school and she suddenly asked me "Did you have double eyelid surgery? Your eyes are so pretty!" and I was so shocked because outside of Korea, you don't just ask someone if they've had double eyelid surgery 😂 I told her I've never had plastic surgery and my eyelids are natural and she kept complimenting me. She also asked how tall I was and at the time, I was 167 cm and she kept complimenting me again, saying my height was considered "beautiful" and "tall" in Korea. What shocked me the most was when she took a few steps back and measured my head and kept counting 😂 and I asked her what she was doing and she kept saying "Your body proportion is kinda good! Your body is 7.5 times the size of your head, I like it!" and I was sooooo confused 😂😂😂 till I researched more about Korean culture and actually finally understood where they were coming from. I think I was just shocked because of the cultural difference and how direct she was, but it's great to know about other people's culture because I think it can be beautiful, too 💜 She taught me more about Korean culture and I taught her more about mine, too! 💜 Thank you for this video, Jessica! 💜

Distinctive beauty is more important than just plain perfect. The reason why people like piccasso's art was because even though they are very complicated to understand, it's still got you curious and interested. Same goes with our looks, I'm not saying that it's bad to have an almost perfect appearance but sometimes when you realize that already it just becomes not so special anymore and being normal will become more appealing than being perfect.

I honestly don’t mind plastic surgery. It really depends on the person that gets it. It’s your body and you do what you want with it. However (I acknowledge this sounds contradictory), I would prefer if people were more open about it. I know you get to decide what truth you put out into the world, but because we’re saturated with images and models of different standards of beauty, I think people owning their surgery will help the masses realize not everyone is born perfect. You can have insecurities and it’s up to you if you want to change it or accept it the way it is. Let’s take the kardashians as an example, they set quite a few trends when it comes to what we should accept as the standard of beauty (some of which are being culturally appropriated, yikes!) but they’re quick to deny going under the knife and saying it was all thanks to puberty and not the help of dr. Zizmor. This concept of “glow ups” and “puberty” puts so much pressure on teenage girls to look a certain way, only to feel disappointed because they weren’t able to look like a kardashian after puberty. I mean maybe if they just owned up to having work done, it would change the way these impressionable teens see how puberty won’t always get you the perfect face or body. Seeing the changes might even help others accept their flaws because they’re seeing their insecurities on their idols. That alone sends out the message that you can change it if you want to, or live with the beautiful features you have.

I don't understand how do they distinguish each other? The Korean beauty standard is complete bullshit. It makes you incomprehensible to the world. Beauty is relative. I don't think the ex-factory faces are pretty or attractive at all. Why do you care so much about being pale white? It's a dead color. It's like there's no blood running through veins. It is absurd to place so much emphasis on external beauty. I think you should let go of these perceptions. The faces of men and women are in the same series as if they were copy-pasted. - _- please love yourself without plastic surgery. You are beautiful (yes you)

90% of Koreans had plastic surgery is a gross exaggeration and misconception. Korea is the plastic surgery capital of the world because Korea has the BEST/most skilled plastic surgeons in the world. There is even plastic surgery tourism (people from other countries going to Korea to get plastic surgery). Of course, your “mileage” might vary and you need to do your research. And Korea has it’s share of “quacks” who don’t know what they are doing but will gladly take your money. If several plastic surgeons tell you “no, they won’t/can’t/refuse to do what you want”, you should listen to them. A search for actual numbers of Koreans who have done plastic surgery (straightening you teeth is NOT plastic surgery), like rhinoplasty, double eyelid surgery, v-line surgery, etc puts the number at around 25%-33% of Koreans in Seoul. Among Korean entertainers (idols, actors/actresses, models, etc), the percentage is higher but not 100% or 90%. Beauty standards are what is generally considered attractive by a society but is not absolute. You could be considered beautiful even if you don’t possess/match whatever beauty standards exist wherever you live. Like, in the USA, having a voluptuous/curvy body, plump lips, big butt/hips, arched eyebrows, tanned skin is considered beautiful. Korean beauty standards are the opposite. Koreans like slim body/butt/hips, pale skin, small face, v-line jaw, slightly curved eyebrows, thin lips, etc. I think that beauty standards also come from body types that generally are found wherever you live. Like western/Caucasian bodies generally have bigger bone structure than Asian bodies. Asians tend to be slimmer and “age” slower than Caucasians. Caucasians tend to show signs of “aging” (wrinkles, weight gain, etc) by late 20’s/early 30’s while Asians can/may look young well into their 40’s. Could be due to what they eat/diet, avoiding sun tanning, genes, etc. Westerners tend to eat bigger portions and fattier foods. May account for high obesity rate in USA and being overweight considered “normal” in USA.

No, forget that shit. You don't need to nor should you ever have to change your appearance to please other people, especially people you're not ever going to meet or meet again. Just stay as yourself and accept yourself. Other people's opinions don't mean shit.

Everyone is uniquely beautiful. We are made differently to each other to have our own identity, imagine if we all look the same? wouldnt that be so weird? What flawed is the perception of society with beauty, so next time someone called you Ugly, know that your not the problem, they are. Because everybody is beautiful

I think the Pali_Pali Culture will not help Korea in the long run. It only focuses on being fast on a certain trend or culture in Korea but does not take to account what is happening in other countries.

i've been watching korean shows for years now, specifically variety shows. there were once that a host said that, "its too rare to see a natural beauty (korean beauty) nowadays".

Thank you. This is the best explanation I’ve heard regarding Korean beauty standards and plastic surgery. I always feel like I’m on self defense mode as we tend to be viewed as being superficial or care too much about looks and appearance. Or whenever someone is attractive it’s believed it’s only because they have had plastic surgery.

I was a dancer for yrs when I was younger until my second child in my 20s a size 8 Australia, more children later, I stopped dancing now I'm a size 18 Australia. I'm so grateful that I suffer from a high self esteem 🤣. I love me! I honestly don't care what anyone else thinks, it does not bother me at all. I'm half New Zealand Maori and half Cook Island. My heart goes out to those who don't feel beautiful, or are told they are ugly or are bullied about their size or look,😭. I wish I could hug 😘 you and tell you you are beautiful.

A weird experience. I do not know the meaning of monolid and double eyelid until recently because I have been watching kdrama, korean variety shows (really funny and entertaining to watch) and idols everyday. Then I checked myself in the mirror and said "Oh, okay, so this is what double eyelid means". In general, everything wee see on television affects the way of how our society thinks. Sad reality. But yes, change is the only constant thing in this world.

I think, media has also a huge role in setting beauty standards. The ideals of beauty being portrayed in media platforms reinforce the idea that "thin and fair skin, etc. is beautiful."
