I really liked this video because I am a stay at home, homeschooling mom and even though I don’t make money doing what I do, the same principles of boundaries and self care still apply (which I am going to implement.) I am in my early forties, and it never ceases to amaze me how much I learn from people younger than me. I love your videos. I’ve been watching you since 2011 and the way you’ve grown and changed is inspiring. I loved cutie pie, young Ingrid and now I love beautiful, zen Ingrid and all the Ingrid’s in between. Thank you for bringing lightness and beauty to our world. 💕

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given is to schedule my energy. We often talk about how we fit everything in, what’s on our calendars, what do we have to get done today. And that’s important, but it’s also important to recognize how much energy those things take.So for me, if I’m going to have a huge conference call one afternoon that is going to require a lot of energy, I’m going to make sure that I’m giving myself a less intense schedule before and after that call. It’s hard to manage sometimes, but I think it make a huge difference. Just because we can make all “the things” fit on a calendar, doesn’t mean we have it under control from an energy perspective.
@viannapettis50116 жыл бұрын
Sarah Hubler - The Beauty Hub I would absolutely agree with this. I’ve been doing this my entire adult life and I didn’t even realize it until I read this. Lol. I tend to have some mild social anxieties so when I have something I need to do that I’m not looking forward to doing, (even a simple phone call sometimes will take a lot out of me) I’ll schedule it on an easier day and also schedule it earlier in the morning. I try to tackle the hardest thing first that way the rest of the day is easygoing. Thanks for this! It helps when someone puts words to your actions and thought processes.

I love this, that it is such valuable advice. Whether we're introverted or extroverted, we're human beings and we use and need energy - and everyone needs to be replenished. I love this especially because we live in a culture that so often values "the hustle" that we see our limits as failures. Having a limit doesn't mean that you're a failure, it means you're alive and your body is literally trying to tell you to stop. I've never heard it put in this way before where it's so clear and concise, but it's definitely how I strive to live my life and this is something I'm gonna keep thinking about and carry with me. Thank you Sarah!

Sarah Hubler - The Beauty Hub I do the exact same thing! I’m recovering from a hysterectomy so my energy is precious. Physical therapy, chores, and other activities can drain me pretty quickly so I’ve learned to work around them and make accommodations whenever possible so I don’t burn out. SO important to communicate expectations and needs to anyone I work with too!
@Glitterforest6 жыл бұрын
This is an area that I totally struggle with. I deal with chronic fatigue so my energy is extremely limited and I really need to plan my days well because if I overdo it, then I'm out for the next couple days. So it's important to pace myself and take breaks and not feel guilty for listening to my body. Which I'm not going to lie, I feel a lot of guilt about not having the energy to do as much as most people. There is so much pressure to keep up and not just keep up but to over do it. People seem to feel prideful about not getting enough sleep and working more than the average person. I don't really understand it, because I would much rather be in good health than overwork myself. But nonetheless I still feel that judgement for not pushing myself to the edge. It's nice to hear that other people feel this way too! :)

I'd like to see a video on your thoughts of having a creative job. I'm trying to start a career as a creative but am having trouble committing to it. How do you handle taxes? What about health care? How do you stay motivated when friends and family ask you about getting a real job or question your decision to leave another job? How do you network with other creatives/industry people? What are good ways to handle people/companies insisting they shouldn't pay you because they're giving exposure or whatever? I'd really appreciate any advice you could offer to help make committing to it less overwhelming and scary.

Oh I hear you. I'm a songwriter and perform as a filler during intermezzos in political debates and lectures mainly. For me writing the songs is the easy part, it's the networking, collaborating with other groups and organizing my presence on the internet that's so hard to structure because I feel very dependent on the situation and whatever is going on in that specific period.

I would like to address this, listen if you want, ignore if you want. How do you handle people companies insisting they shouldn't pay you, don't do any work for free, honestly feel free to tell them to fuck off. Nothing in life is free, and your talent shouldn't be either. about family telling you to get a real job. Until your creative career takes off its not bad to have a back up source of steady income. One of the best ways to do this is to get an entry level job with a creative company you like or respect. taxes are complicated as you can pull out and pay taxes per pay basis or pay them at the end of the year during tax time with a company like H&R block etc. A good way to network with other creatives is social media like facebook groups. or places where they get work. like upwork.com artpal etc. advice to help you make committing less scary is have a fall back, but even if you fail do it again until you succeed. just take into account you may need a steady income source while starting out. Treat your creative career as a part time career and invest some of your steady income into to help it expand if you wish.

I have worked from home for over 17 years now (not self-employed) so I work a regular "shift" as there is a lot of interaction between me at home and the people who work in the lab and offices. So many things still apply - get on a schedule, get yourself ready for the day, take breaks, don't let yourself work through lunch, set boundaries, and when the work day is over, shut that office down!

Definitely interested in your thoughts on disconnecting as a whole. I feel so compelled to always have my phone and know what’s going in the world, and I hate it. I’ve been wondering what screen time balance even is in 2018. Is it wrong to be away from your phone for long periods of time? What about emergencies? What about txts? Does not be constantly informed make you seem old or lazy? Should I feel guilty about the correspondence expectations of others or should I meet my needs? These are all things I consider as a 29 year old women. It seems so silly to even think these things, but I do really feel like you understand and are taking action to find your balance. I appreciate you, your time and your thoughts. Thank you for this content Ingrid 💜
@ingridnilsen6 жыл бұрын
For me, I look at screen time balance and disconnecting as forms of creating personal boundaries. There are a lot of people who will try to say that boundaries are bad and that boundaries are unnecessary or frivolous. People think that boundaries mean you don’t care, but they mean the exact opposite to me. They mean that you care a lot and that you respect yourself. I really think from now and into the future, we’re going to hear so many more people talking about this!

I am a night owl, and I loved how you shed a little light on how this is our rhythm vs. that we're lazy. I've always felt bad for sleeping late, and seemingly sleeping in because many of the people around me are early risers. I've tried to sleep and wake up earlier because I do agree that more hours would fall into my timeframe to be productive ... but I think I stress about it too much, and end up failing ultimately. So it's going to be a super slow adjustment for me if and when I want to try that again. Very informative video - I loved it!

Great video on working from home. I like your tips on setting up break times, and getting fresh air. I agree so much with getting out, if you can. It’s like a reboot for the rest of your work day. I feel most productive in the morning, but with having kids, I find the easiest time to get things done is in the evening once they are in bed. I will often catch myself over multitasking and have to refocus. Taking a break even for 5 minutes really helps with that.

You can work at your body's rhythm, as you said, mostly only if you're self employed. I've worked form home for around 6 years now, and before besides working at an office, I also worked freelance (from home, of course) and I have to follow the regular working hours from most offices schedule. How I manage to work from home without losing my mind is to wake up earlier enough to have breakfast, I read the paper while at it, and then after work I set myself to go out at least three times a week, I do boxing 3 times a week so that kinda covers it, but since it's always the same activity I try to do other stuff to. Especially if you live alone or are the only member of your family that works from home, it can become a bit lonely, since you spend 8 hours of your day by yourself, so I think going out to do whatever you like to do it's a great way to both, leave the house and interact with other people. I think it's really important to actually take the time to lunch, even if you work in an office. Totally agree about not working in the bedroom, I also have an office for the only purpose of working, to keep the professional and the personal life separated.
@NickaPaulo6 жыл бұрын
It's not about the time you work but about your focus so you be as productive as possible. There are days that I work 12h and I don't see anything done because I'm splitting my attention and when the deadline kicks in I'll have work days that count for 2-3 normal days because I stay focus on what I need to do. I also work from home and I never work in my bedroom and rarely work in my living room because it's like you said each thing has it's vibe/energy. I always get more done in my office. But said that my last place didn't have space for an office so I worked from my living room. You/me/we need to work with what we have and it doesn't matter that most people do it like this or that, if it doesn't work for you don't force it because if you go with the flow you will be happy and produce greater work. (I know what is best for me at the moment but I'm always trying new stuff because we change and there is always space to improve just be careful if it makes you happy or more stressed =D) Loved the video

I've tried to make it a priority to relax and eat before starting and this has definitely helped my productivity. Thank you Ingrid!

Yes I’m the most productive early through to late night time. And I always felt lazy because I wasn’t doing any work through the day. I wake up late morning and spend the day not doing much ( like what most people would do at night) and then the later it gets the more I wake up and I can become a lot more focused. I particularly love the hours of 12-2am because everything’s so quiet and I’m far less distracted. In the past I’ve always enjoyed night shift jobs rather than day jobs too!

Girl, this was such a great video! I see a big difference in the videos you've made over the last six months and I have to say, I love it. You seem grounded, confident and sure of yourself and that is beautiful and inspiring. Excited to see more from you in this season.

As a small business owner that works from home or my office (alone) this is super helpful.

Thank you so much for sharing this; I’m still learning what kind of work schedule works for me and what helps me to stress less, so hearing someone else talk about it is so helpful!

I had to move back home into my old bedroom so i rearranged furniture and bought shelves to block off my bed and my desk area like in a studio apartment. I was really bad at working in bed in college but I haven’t since rearranging and i feel much more productive!

I don’t ‘work from home’ but I am homeschooled. My teacher is also a teacher at a real school, so my lessons are always after 3 or 4 pm. I use my mornings for homework, but I’m so bad at just getting on and doing it. I feel like my days are so unproductive. A big part of that is that I don’t eat breakfast and I usually get dressed just before my lesson starts. I’m going to try some of you’re tips ❤️

I really love this video. I’m working from home more and this has been really helpful for me. I follow a lot of the same tips but I really appreciated when you recognized that working late doesn’t mean that you are lazy. This has been such a problematic mindset for me that I am trying to break and I just need to accept that I work better in the afternoon/evening! I also really related to when you said that changing out of your clothes, even if it’s into loungewear is important. I’ve been really loving the direction of your videos lately and I feel like I can connect with you. Keep up the amazing work!

Wooo Ingrid, I remember the video of a productive morning from a few years ago and I never got the opportunity to thank you, that video LITERALLY CHANGE MY LIFE! I was on a non productive face of my life and your tips and mindfulness help me a lot! So, once again you've come with this amazing bag of tools and tips and I appreciate it immensely! Thank you and BTW I miss your cooking videos! Kisses from Orlando 😘❤️💕

This is helpful! I work from home part time and am a stay at home mom so I need to work during nap times and that is tough because you need to make every second count!

Same here. I have learned to start "prepping myself" before naptime, eating together with my daughter, drinking a cup of coffee, pick up the house as much as possible, so when she falls asleep i can start working immediately. I have to take business calls, that can be tricky, but people usually find the baby noises cute and understand :D

bridzs333 I do the exact same thing!! And I try not to let myself do any cleaning or cooking during my work hour or it will be gone before I know it!

This is a great video. I work for a company as a remote employee. I punch and punch out, working 40 hours. It’s not glamorous, it’s a job and though nice. You can get sucked into bad routines. Even be over working.

Thanks for the inspiration Ingrid :) you always help me remember how important balance is. In graduate school, I often get so wrapped up in my studies that I lose other parts of my self. Thanks for reminding me to take a step back and reflect sometimes.
