Solarpunk is a subtle movement. I think we'll eventually figure out the MetaCrisis and eliminate bad incentives in the system. So many people are worried about AI alignment but never think about how corporations are misaligned with human flourishing. I want my Star Trek/Solarpunk future!

@@TSBoncompte no, capitalism did. especially the part where it develpps towards online markets. if the world outside was healthy, why would anyone spend whole day in virtual realities? it's convenient to make people think there are many dangers and only enemies outside, so you better go inside, put on VR headset and buy Zuck's digital fantasies 🌚

On the point about AI, I'm less concerned about a Terminator-like uprising and more on corporations using it as a new excuse screw over artists and writers (which is one of the major demands of the current writer's strike in Hollywood).
@falconJB
@falconJB Жыл бұрын
Its just showing that soulless art churned out by the corps is no different from a car or a lump of coal, few people, other than those directly impacted, mourned the loss of automotive or coal mining jobs to automation and now we see that few people will mourn the loss of corporate art to automation. But automated art doesn't stop people from being able to make real Art, Art with a soul, and with the internet Artists are more capable than ever of sharing that Art with others and even getting people that love the Art they make to help fund it. The hollywood writers should get fair pay, as all workers should, but don't think they are defending real Art, they are defending the profitability of selling out to a corporation.

Growing up in a village, and now living in a busy bustling city that is Singapore, I cant wait to have a house of my own so that I can start to grow my own plants and always have cooked food in the fridge to share with my neighbours, I really miss the days when neighbours will help each other and the strong sense of community when i was growing up, people shouting for others to keep their clothes when it starts to rain, when people could just walk into eachothers houses and talk to eachother, those were better times to my little child brain, and solarpunk really reminds me of those times.

Yes! I would love to start an earth-ship hobbit town somewhere in my home state of PA where we have a centralized village commons, become part of the "Land Back Movement," and foster a truly green self-sufficient city-town. Elders teach how to live in unison with the land and don't push capitalist agendas, children move freely and safely in their community and are looked after and taught by the all adults within the community, and everyone contributes something. Incorporating bio-hacking would be pretty neat too. I think the biggest limitation would be medical facilities and this innate American requirement of health insurance to get any type of care.

I live one mile uphill from a Motorway. Every peak travel hour I see tens of thousands of commuters travelling long distances to work. My neighbour lost 3 hours to traffic after a nursing shift. I always think of commuting/housing affordability as the first sector to improve in a better future. Trains are nice you can meet folks and sleep and not be legally liable as a driver.

Oddly. Black Mirror's San Junipero was one of the most hopeful futures I've seen in fiction. The "real world" is seen as a peaceful and kind place. People are seen helping each other. Even the male nurse is selflessly helping the main character gain freedom from her abusive family. People are allowed to choose when to die with dignity. We see rolling hills and quiet vehicles. Then there's the whole San Junipero system where it's literally heaven on earth and you can choose to upload to it and live in your happiest times with your friends and family for as long as you want. The company running the servers isn't depicted as having ulterior profit motives, it seems like they just made it because it would be good for people. The only tragedy being those who passed before the system was invented. I like finding hopeful speculative fiction!

I'm an aspiring fiction writer who plans to help refine the movement, not just as a genre, but also as the best possible future in reality. Thanks for the video. When I showed my mom solarpunk, she said "futuristic hobbits," though not in those exact words. If you have any advice for me, I'd be happy to listen.

My advice: set a manageable number of words a day, and stick to it. 50 to 400, you choose. Anything over your daily quota is a cherry on top. You can edit A bad draft, but not a blank page.

and even going further: its a universal law, like physics, that it takes less energy to break smth than it takes to repair or build it. thats applicable to physical things but also politics. politicians who dont wanna change things for the better jobs are much easier when people are scared, bc they can just keep on pointing fingers at everyone else and harnessing that fear to stay in their offices
