Good evening. My onion plants arrived today. I thought they would need to be planted in January as I'm in zone 7 but mountains sometimes make our weather like zone 6. I'm going to cover with straw. Hope for the best with us. Any tips for colder weather success? We've already had 7 nights at 20-25°. Will try your suggestion of containers for a few that I can keep in the greenhouse. Your wonderful customer service said not a good idea to delay planting.
@gardeningwithhoss2 жыл бұрын
Most varieties are hardy to 20 F. (-6 C.) What matters more is how long the temperatures are below freezing. A cultivation prior to a hard freeze results in a layer of moist soil at the surface that acts as insulation. This holds the day’s heat in the soil around the bulb and root. Also, watering plants in well prior to a freeze will also serve as insulation around the bulb.

Sulfur is abundant in the atmosphere, in the form of sulfur dioxide from man-made and natural processes. It's also found in organic matter (compost, manure and decomposing plant matter), organic fertilizers (cow and pig manure) and mineral fertilizer.

Honestly I'm used to seeing onions being planted in spring the seeds having been started in trays or pods early on so their ready by spring and grow through out the warmer days of the year never have I seen winter planting of onions garlic maybe but not the beloved onion do they not suffer from the cold temperature levels or the frost an snow ? I live basically smack dab in the middle of Kentucky so our ground does freeze in winter felt like a rock last winter my fingers I thought would fall off so one can understand my hesitation on this so I gotta ask is it possible to still plant onions in my area and is there any preparation I need such as covering them with a mulch or a mini hoop house style thing I just don't know
