Greg I had that very experience 12 years ago. I moved here from Washington state. I didn’t know anything about growing onions. I bought those sets from my Feed Store and had a very bad experience with all body and no bulb at the end of the season and was totally disappointed, and thought I would never grow onions again, about a year later I found your website and learned about onions and now I’m like you they are one of my favorite things to grow in the garden because you taught me how to do it, right! I tell my friends about you and your channel that your channel pretty much the Bible of growing in the south! I have several of your tools, including two hand plows that I love. Thank you for a good business and great information!

I started some onions and then planted them in a planter above the ground close to each other, about two inches, and much deeper, about 3 inches. Then I cut the tops sparingly to use them in cooking. They are very mild but the green adds nutrition to soups, stir fry, etc. Then later I pull out the onions and they turn out much like leeks. I have two large planters full of only this set up that supplies nutritious onion throughout the winter and into spring when they become leeks. One soup I make with these cuttings is simply chicken broth, sliced cuttings, potatoes, dried herbs, and meat, delicious!

Thank you very much for the info, Greg. I learned about onions this past Feb. I bought organic onion seeds from Walmart. Right after that, I was researching about growing onions from seed. I discovered there are different types of onions just like you mentioned, long-day, intermediate and short-day. Never knew that. The onion seeds I bought were long day. Took them back because I knew they wouldn't grow right in my hot 8b zone.

My first year growing onions, and I can't wait. I have Texas early grano and Australian brown. Not sure if the Australian brown is short day or not, but It's too late to turn around now. 😂 At least the Texas early grano is short day and I have more of them. I'm in zone 8a Georgia and I started them from seeds in August I think. 🤔 They are about as tall as the ones you have in this video.

We have always purchased our onion plants from a local seed store. Also we have had good luck with them. This year we are taking a dive and going to try planting our onions from seed. We are in zone 7B. So we plan on planting the seeds around the first of December. Doing the trimming and such and transplanting them mid February or early March. We generally harvest our onions late June to mid July. As always Thank You for another informative and fun video!

Sets can be grown in the south. I unintentionally grew some this year. We had some extremely cold temperatures this past Winter, that devastated a large part of our onion crop, so I started more onion seeds, hoping to mitigate some of the lose. Some of them started to bulb then the tops dried up. When it was time to harvest my onions, I dried those small ones and hung them in an onion sack in the barn. I planted them about two months ago and have some beautiful green onions. I never intended to grow them into big bulbs, because sets always tend to have a greater chance of bolting. This proved to be a successful experiment for me to repeat this year. I enjoyed your videos.

In 7A, can I get a long day onion to make it from tray if I plant in ground right after last frost? I have three trays under grow light. They have been going about a month.
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 ай бұрын
Long day onions are best suited for growing at latitudes of 37-47°. Initiate bulb formation at 14-16 hours of daylight. Grown mostly at northern latitudes (Zone 6 and colder). Usually planted in late winter to early spring, but some varieties are suitable for overwintering. This type includes sweet, specialty, and long-storage varieties.

@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 ай бұрын
Intermediate day onion varieties are the most widely adaptable since they require 12-14 hours of sunlight before beginning the bulbing process. Unless you live in far south Florida or south Texas you should have enough daytime hours to make nice-sized bulbs. When planted at the proper time, intermediate day onion varieties mature in approximately 100 days.
