Absolutely the worst mistake I ever made was listening to "a friend" about the direction of my career over my own instincts. My gut was screaming to run away but I was so eager to trust this person. I'm slowly recovering from that giant misstep but it took me very far down the wrong path.

Thank you for sharing this. When naming my business I considered “is this something I’d want to sell later in life” with that in mind a brand name was more beneficial for me. But I did have this struggle before my reasoning.

Haven't listened to everything as yet, but this question about whether to use a business brand or your personal brand: speak to a lawyer and accountant about this. No friend, so-called expert etc. The reason is that for accounting purpose, business finance and personal finance SHOULD be separate! You can use your own name, but ensure that your finances are separate. For intellectual property reasons, its hard to sell the brand of you if you decide to close the business. Even if you don't want to sell, ensuring your business is sellable makes sure you're compliant. SPEAK TO A LAWYER AND/OR ACCOUNTANT. No one else. Once you understand the pros and cons of both, then you can make an educated decision. Its good to trust your gut, but its also good to actually understand your choices before you make one. Read the two sides of the coin, then work with your gut.

A proper coach should not be giving advice!! They are sounding boards to bounce ideas off of, to explore ideas out loud so YOU can make the decision that’s best for you. A mentor can give advice and they should be people who are one step ahead of where you want to be.

Agree, I am a coach and it's sad to hear what Carrie said about coaches.. Our aim is to ask thought provoking questions in order for a client to find their own answers and make their own decisions. Thank you for sharing!
