I'm not a snake breeder, nor do I plan on being one, but I had to watch because it caught my interest. This got my cogs turning. Great business plan, and guys don't forget taxes. I hate taxes, everyone hates taxes, but if you don't want the IRS brown shirts garnishing your wages or taking possession of your house over you not paying them $516 (I just did the 12% tax bracket times the $4,300 for the feds, it all depends on your yearly income, but that will do as an example) than account for your taxes. I hope that I don't come off as a dick, not at all what I'm trying to do, I just don't want people forgetting about their taxes and end up getting into trouble because they forgot to put the money they made off of their snakes down as extra income. Great video, I enjoyed learning about the breeding business, thanks!

Taxes are definitely a thing. It is one reason we leave almost everything in the account until the year, so we can pay them. A good accountant is also worth the weight in gold.

I really enjoy your video's, this subject in particular. I hope you touch on tenacity. Doesn't matter what the business. The difference between success and failure is tenacity. Whether your first clutch going bad or my first holdback pair being both females. 100% of quitters fail.
@OlympusReptiles4 жыл бұрын
@@adrianhoverter7198 I agree. I might have misunderstood your comment as well. If keeping it after the rainy day fund, and bills are all paid etc. Then yeah! Just don't want people selling a snake, putting that in pocket, then not having money for a rat/litter/rack bill etc.
@adrianhoverter71984 жыл бұрын
I believe you did misunderstand. I meant once your snakes are paying for themselves, no longer taking money from me. You now have what used to come out of your paycheck to pay for rats, litter ect , you can save that money or use it for day to day stuff. It feels like extra money. So yes anything coming in from snakes...is their money.

I love that you place emphasis on the real life struggles and financial management when owning these amazing animals. You just come up with an idea, turn the camera on and have a conversation. I definitely want to breed ball pythons (not as a means of money, I just want to produce my own beautiful animals) and your videos have helped me create realistic goals for this future. Thank you. I also have a quick question, I just got a baby ball python and I'm not sure how to go about sexing her (the person I got her from said it was a female but wasn't positive). Do you suggest that I take her to a vet, probe, pop, etc? I don't feel super confident in probing but I believe I have done enough research on popping. I've heard some conflicting ideas on sexing snakes and I just want to know what you personally suggest.

Great content matt.glad you cover these kinds of topics. Maybe a vid or a 2nd part to this vid covering something like this..as always keep up the great work with those balls and content with the videos 😀

I can tell you that if you have the snakes people want it really won't matter whether you're well known or not. Just be sure to make it clear that you will be there for them both before and after the sale and put it in writing. That is probably the only concern buyers have with newer breeders. If you have that spelled out then I don't think you'll have a problem. If you have a place where satisfied customers can leave reviews you can also point to this as a reference once you've sold enough to have customers' opinions. Another thing you can do to gain the trust of buyers is to let them know if the sire or dam is from a well-respected lineage. Many savvy buyers know they can get a better price on lines they know are high quality by getting them from a smaller, newer breeder. (Same quality but they aren't paying for the big name). So for instance, if one of the parents came from Justin Kobylka or NERD, or Royal Constrictor Designs, be sure to include that detail in your advertising. If they want proof be prepared to show paperwork of some sort. Also, keep good records and be sure to let the buyers know how a particular baby is eating, what size, and the hatchling's weight. All this will show that you are breeding responsibly and that you want them to be as informed as possible; not just trying to get rid of the animal as quick as possible.

I did the math on a snake vs a dog and a snake would be a way better idea for a college grad in terms of price and time investment. My mom told me she will buy me a dog and pay its first year of bills (food, vet, toys, etc) after I graduate. I do not want a dog because of yearly vet visits, monthly feed costs, and I would not have the time to spend with it as a puppy if I work a full time job. Ball pythons can live up to 30 years and Kenyans can live up to 20, a dog only lives about half that. I want a pet and I know I could afford a snake much easier than I could afford a dog long term. I love dogs but as a veterinary technician I can’t in good conscious adopt an animal and not be able to give it the best care. I see that too often at my job. For example people don’t do enough research on a certain breed and can’t afford the expenses that come with the breed’s health issues so the animal suffers. Or people don’t socialize the dog/don’t teach it appropriate behavior and they opt to euthanize it for being “a bad dog”. I don’t want to become that person. I think this video kind of ties into that. Before getting any animal people need to plan out expenses for the animal’s life.

I've done some math on breeding and for six hundred you could get a couple of snakes food racks and an incubator
@OlympusReptiles5 жыл бұрын
I think you will find prices vary a lot. Buying used, building, buying new? What snakes? Do the racks prepare for babies as well as adults? It will always cost more than initial thoughts, as things come up. However, this video is made to give realistic expectations of the situation given based on the experience. It isn't meant to discourage, it can certainly be done!
@bobbyjean93235 жыл бұрын
I have a calider right now and would buy a super pastel. There is a rat breeder that owns the rodent barn two hours away. I would buy a five rack from tgr. And have dividers in two of the racks for baby's and I would also buy an exo terra incubator. That ends up being six or seven hundred dollars

Do you have or could you do a video on knowing when to go from hobby to business. Is there a certain number of funds you should be making? At what point should I start filing taxes? do tax right offs take part in that? Should I do or not do tax right offs? Is there a benefit to it? basically I am just a hobbiest. 2nd year, I breed lizard, not snakes. I do not make much at all and like you said it in no way pays for my investments. But I also do not want to cross any lines where I could get into trouble. Last but not least, do trades count in that as income?

This is great! I'm kicking myself for buying $5k in snakes this year, and now my electric bill is almost $500/month. Ouch! I'm curious what I would need to do to write them off as a business expense. I'm assuming I'd need to register as an LLC?

just saw this, don't know why it took that long. Yes. You can't write off your whole bill if it is in your house, but a portion. Get registered as a business (llc, whatever you like) then find an accountant that works with small business. He/she will know the rules, save you on taxes, give you advice how to save more, and keep you out of jail. Someone will say I do it this way and it works just do that. Works until it doesn't if you get sideways with the tax folks. Not worth it.
