How to be WISE, MASCULINE & VIRILE? According to ANTIQUE AFRICAN CARVING!

African Sculpture. Top Tips coming up! Here’s an antique African wooden sculpture I bought yesterday. Depicting a seated man in a contemplative pose. He’s wearing a wonderful protruding beard which symbolises wisdom, masculinity and virility. He dates to around the mid 20th century, he’s carved from one piece of timber and he has a lovely colour and patination. I’ll clean and wax him, which will take no time and explain how you go about aging an African wooden sculpture.
I’m going to sell him for £150 (plus p&p) …if you fancy him, do get in touch!

Please don’t put wax anywhere near genuine tribal antiques - you instantly devalue them. Luckily this is a generic tourist piece so no harm done.

Your estimate was “1950” so yes that age is of interest to collectors. It’s probably much more recent - late 20th at best. My comment was intended to discourage others from grabbing wax and ruining what might be old African items they have in their possession. Apologies if I offended.

Long, full beards get girls - historically true. That's part of why all those American Civil War era dudes grew them. Signalling the girlies that there was fun to be had.(LOL) Oddly, he looks a lot like my former pastor (now retired) right down to the beard!
