I'm wondering as to the cost of each of the glasses, I would imagine the Georgian wine glass was (and is) much dearer (in today's money) so if one glass in a hundred was broken or stolen, what would that cost (factored in) to the then glass of wine?

Good thinking, but that’s hurting my brain!

I can tell you enjoyed making that video! Taking inflation into account, I wonder if a comparable bottle of wine would have been cheaper or more expensive in 1774?
People were cheaper drunks back then; they were smaller! But wine had to be more expensive. It was all picked, bottled, fermented etc by hand. SHipped by wagon and horses, and then by ship. That said, a glass or two of the Georgian period wouldn't get even a lightweight like me loaded. I'd have to go down to the pub for a pint of cider like normal folk.

Could also drink Gin if you were on a budget…cheaper than water!

You're forgetting your beauty spot, they were all the rage too with the 1774 trendies.

But a pound in 1774 was worth alot more than it is now, not many lower classes even saw a pound so it wouldve been twice as expensive to keep the lady's drink alive. But also the amount of energy required to put into making wine was alot more cos it was all hand made, wine now obviously still has to be matured the same way but they can produce alot more of it with modern tech than they could back then so people can drink more wine cos theres alot of cheap wine now, in 1774 there was no "budget brand" you could either afford to be drinking wine if you were higher class or you couldnt drink it at all if you were lower class.

You could also drink Gin of course…cheaper than water and three times the strength of current Gin! Kept you warm, kept hunger at bay and helped you forget the problems of 1774!

@@DavidHarperAntiques Ah right was it? I guess the lower classes were all drinking gin then, I'm sure they didn't let lack of wealth stop them getting drunk one way or another. As you say for most it was about blotting out their hardships which were way worse than we can imagine these days with our relatively comfortable lifestyles even for lower classes.

@@Jeremy-f3s Very true. We don’t know how lucky we are compared to the lives of our ancestors. Being drunk most of the time was a good solution for many !
