No harm to black powder because it has done a lot for the period. But I would strongly suggest looking up the fan home-brew changes to the rules. There were put out by a club in the UK and are free. Why? Because I have seen a lot of things happen in black powder games which just shouldn't happen in this period. Like French cavalry bouncing off Austrian infantry in line, and getting badly beaten at that. I was in a WAB (Warhammer Ancient Battles) game, and just nipping out for a smoke when they failed to form square in the face of the French cavalry. So I stopped to see them get hammered in a potential game changing moment the French player had managed to pull off with some good command rolls. Then instead the cavalry get beaten back, and the Austrian infantry are still stood there in line. In the home-brew rules, they would have had to fall back. And if the cavalry still have enough movement, they are routed or otherwise removed from the table, or broken. It basically boils down to infantry in line v Cavalry = bad times, lol. I can't remember the exact rule offhand, as the files are on my other PC. But if you or anybody interested, looks up border reivers wargames society. You will find some good info on making your black powder games more reflective of the period. If nothing else, it's something to try out for a few games, and see how you feel it affects your enjoyment of the game.

If you're brave enough and they dont go for your flanks and rear, you can definitely meet a cavalry charge in line. Its risky, but doable, and some units did do this and succeed.

Please help, im just getting into black powder and I’m a little confused with the army building rules for the Austrians. Under the infantry brigade it says I can’t have more Hungarian than German infantry regiments, is this referring to the whole army or in that particular brigade, I assume it’s for the whole army though it doesn’t say that even though it DOES say it for the cannon and grenza. Another question how is the author getting 34 points for the Abteilung? The example stats that the two hussar regiments could be replaced with up to four small units each, but with the small units being 8 points but that doesn’t work, nor does dividing the hussar unit by 8 out of 51 points. Any clarity would be GREATLY appreciated

What do others make Austrian Regiment sizes of ? I have been making 2 Battalions of 24 and Grenadiers Battalions of 32

My friends are doing 32 to a battalion on the basis that this is a third larger than regular-sized battalions of 24. Actually, they might be doing 30, with a mounted officer in the space of two infantrymen. Anyway, a footprint a third larger than a normal battalion.

An actual regiment has 2 Battalions of 6 Companies plus 2 Companies of Grenadiers

The organisation of the Austrian Army changed a number of times throughout the Napoleonic period but I'm assuming that you'll be gaming 1809 as that seems to be the most popular campaign. That means German regiments still in helmets and Hungarians in Shakos some Grenzers still in white jackets but some in brown. BTW the O'Riley Chevaux Legere wore white jackets at this time too. Austrian regiments fielded 3 battalions each composed of 6 companies of around 160 men or 960 men per battalion equal to 2,880 per regiment at least in theory. There are 3 great books on the Austrian Army by Enrico Acerbi that I would recommend but anything in Osprey by Dave Hollins would be good too. For the 1809 Campaign the John Gill trilogy can't beaten in my opinion. You can get them all online. More of a General de Brigade/AB miniatures man myself but enjoy Black Powder and your Perry/Victrix figures it's a great hobby.

The Austrian army does not necessarily use a line formation. After all... since 1809 the infantry can use the "attack column". I wonder if the French army in Black Powder has any advantages and advantages over the opponent. In addition to the fact that an infantry regiment can field a free squad of voltigeurs / grenadiers.
