Thanks to General Dan for the photos of his beautifully painted Austrians!
Today we look at the main force for Napoleon's most implacable foes, the Kaiserlicks of Austria. As many of you will know, unit for unit I think these are some of the best units in the game!
If you're looking to get some Napoleonic goodies, (or any goodies for that matter!) please use this link, it doesn't cost you any extra and helps the channel! www.the-outpost.co.uk/aff/93/

Another great video, thanks for this! Could you please break down for me how you can destroy a skirmish unit with one shot in 1 in 6 cases? I though that you still have to cause more unsaved hits that stamina and then they still have to take a break test which fails only on a roll of 4 or less in 2D6 (as for regular batalions)? Do you have some different understaing of the unreliable rule? 13:07

Awesome like always brother. I love the smaller nations ones especially because nobody really makes videos on them...it's all french British and Russian. Got me thinking, just curious really....I know you've talked about British and french and I know the French are your number one. Do you have any other armies in your collection? I took a break from British, I have plenty of units done now and I just jumped in my Prussian army. Once that's done I'm gonna dive into my french starter. The Prussian is just a sound check, the French is gonna be intense lol

Excellent video. The Austrian army was a ponderous dinosaur and until leaders like Archduke Charles took over they were unable to co-ordinate the entire army in the way Napoleon did which meant their attacks were likely limited objectives and often not critical to the outcome of the battle. They also relied heavily on supply depots and slow trains making them sluggish in their movements. Does supply play a role in most rule sets?

It's usually more of a campaign than a tabletop thing, but I guess it's included in the low strategy rating of Austrian generals and their lack of independent movement

Hey I don't know if this is the best place to ask but I'm a little confused on how the Austrian Jager rifle/carbine stats with 2/3 dice works. First I assume that the 2 dice is for the rifles and the 3 dice are for the carbines at least based on the wording of the rule. Second the rule says that the carbines are for close range only I cannot tell if they are being literal or showing flavor text. Does this mean that I cannot use them beyond 6" even though carbines have a 12" range?

Please help, im just getting into black powder and I’m a little confused with the army building rules for the Austrians. Under the infantry brigade it says I can’t have more Hungarian than German infantry regiments, is this referring to the whole army or in that particular brigade, I assume it’s for the whole army though it doesn’t say that even though it DOES say it for the cannon and grenza. Another question how is the author getting 34 points for the Abteilung? The example stats that the two hussar regiments could be replaced with up to four small units each, but with the small units being 8 points but that doesn’t work, nor does dividing the hussar unit by 8 out of 51 points. Any clarity would be GREATLY appreciated
@NapoleonicWargaming

I'll do my best! The army selector is per brigade. So you must have equal or more Germans than Hungarians in each brigade (which will de facto mean you have equal or more in the army). As for the cavalry, you pay the points for the unit, but at the start of the game, you may deploy as 4 small units instead. You can't buy just 2 small units for example, you pay the full cost and have 4 small units or none at all (or keep them at their original size). Does that help?

General Tim, another informative & enjoyable video. I'm still years away from devoting my hobby time to the Austrians but its still fascinating to look at their terrible situation, sandwiched between Prussia, the Ottomans, France and Russia. Pretty much in a state of constant war with one or the other, or a combination of them for over a century. You'd think they'd run out of men for all that. A book that taught me that, was a biography of "Marshall Ney, The Bravest of the Brave" by A. Hilliard Alleridge, which you've probably already read but just in case. Early in his career Ney was in a perpetual war with Austria, all along the Rhine, spring through to Christmas. There were skirmishes galore of just the right size for our tabletops with fairly clear units involved, terrain and so on. Another comment I wanted to communicate to you was about an additional benefit I've found from painting on the sprue. I think I've whinged about my shaky hands before ( a lasting benefit from Vietnam in the artillery), Well, I've found that I can reduce the shaking by half, by bracing the sprue I'm painting against the table, so at least the shaking of the hand holding the sprue isn't shaking. The hand with the brush is still working in the midst of an earthquake but the improvement is quite remarkable. So, thanks again, you're helping even without knowing. Hugs from across the big water.

Extra dice in combat doesn't make sense to me since opposing units would have a similar number of rifles on a limited frontage. The Austrians might have more men but that would mean they could replace casualties making it longer to disorder them. Am I missing something?
@matthiuskoenig3378
@matthiuskoenig3378 3 жыл бұрын
yes you are, both sides are 3 ranks deep, so more Austrians means a larger frontage, meaning more Austrian guns. remember large units are represented by more bases/models.

@NapoleonicWargaming
@NapoleonicWargaming 2 жыл бұрын
I use warhammer sized bases too, so usually either 40x40 for 2 minis by 2 or 60 wide and 40 deep for 3 by 2. General Andy went 15mm x 20mm for his which gives a much more packed (and realistic) look, but I prefer to let my minis be shown off a little so use 20x20
