Fly on a Boeing 787 or an Airbus A350 if possible. These planes have lower cabin pressure which increases the humidity level about 5%. This difference on your body is similar to being at 6000 ft as compared to 8000 ft. The air is also filtered better which decreases the odds of you getting sick. They also have larger windows allowing more natural light. Airbus A380 the double decker plane is also a good choice because it's much quieter. On a long flight flying these planes seems to make a difference to me. Also hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and get an aisle seat so that you can walk around, plus you'll need one from all the water you have consumed. :-)

Now that we are talking about international travel again... Living in Australia and flying to Europe, we have never suffered Jetlag. We have been in Germany and then two days later, back at work. A few reasons: a. Both ways, we book an evening departure with a sunrise arrival. (Say 17:00 to 05:00). So we arrive at the start of the day, feeling glad to get out in the sun. b. Departure day is quite active. Walking. Cleaning the house. Walking. Mowing the lawn. Walking. So that by the time we get to airport, we are a bit physically tired. Get dropped off a bit away from the gate. And stand up as much as possible at the airport. c. In either direction our flight is 20 - 22 hours with a couple of hours stopover. Get about 8 hours of sleep in that time. Not necessarily in one hit. No sleeping pills. No special herbs. No meditation chants. We like to confuse our bodies about when is the actual sleep time. d. Importantly, don't get frustrated or angry that you haven't slept, or that the person near you is keeping you awake. This only compounds the problem. e. Arriving in the morning. Enjoy the sun. Be active. Walk a bit. Rest a bit. But don't lay down. Nap sitting up on an uncomfortable chair if necessary. Don't let your body think that it is sleep time. Good coffee is always good. f. Get into bed as late as you can. We hang out until about 21:00 local time, going both west and east. We usually start waking about 3 or 4 in the morning the next day, not enough sleep, but our rhythm is almost aligned to the local time. And as I said, we have left Rome on a Friday night, missed all of Saturday on the plane, arrived Sunday and been back at the work desk on Monday. And no one could even tell...

I took a trip a few months ago from Oregon to Scotland and experienced Jet Lag for the first time.... It's no joke- took me 2 days to recover. I like the idea of arriving at your destination in the evening so you can go to sleep during their night time hours..... I can't sleep on planes so I get absolutely NO sleep while traveling. Hi, Megan! I didn't know there were elephant rides in Canada! But seriously, some of my tips are to get an .mp3 player and tune everything else out. If you fall asleep, let it. Bring breath mints to help your ears from popping and bring some extra for nearby children whose parents don't realize why the child is crying so much on takeoff. Good ideas!

Very good Tips & advice. I do NOT want to be in Zombie mode during the first few days of my trip considering That is the business part of it. I will keep those apps in mind Especially the seat changer ! Not sure if you mentioned this in your 50 flight hacks. ( I will check that out now ) But I always bring a few electrolyte packs/ sachets. To counter the dehydration thing. NOT the effervescent kind ! It will be difficult but I will take your advice and get out and walk in the sunshine . Thank You.

I’ll be flying U.S. to Bangkok, then train to Chiangmai; leaving September 1 and coming back October 31. I’ve taken this trip 15 times over the last 22 years, so I know what to expect. It takes me 3 days to adjust to the 12 hour difference. I’m flying through Seattle this time (because of a cheap fare and I’ll fly there on Southwest points) but I have to fly there the night before and haven’t decided whether to get a hotel or stay at the airport. I’m flying Singapore airlines and they charge for seat assignments on each segment. I can finally choice my seats when I check in at 48 hours from check in but will keep the site that you recommended to possibly change seats. If I decide that I’m in a hurry to get to Chiangmai, I’ll ship my bags on the train and fly, then pick up the bags the next day. At least it sounds like most if not all travel restrictions to Thailand will be lifted sometime this summer. I can’t wait to go!

And eastward flight is killer - when I flew from Oz to Canada I didn't know WHAT had hit me! I'd done the flight from Oz to UK and barely noticed anything! Then I remembered that coming back from the UK had been killer too (but at the time I thought I was feeling like death cos I had bronchitis - do NOT recommend THAT combination). But even coming back from Thailand to East Coast of Oz wasn't fun (I was tired and emotional - I thought at the time this was me regretting leaving Thailand but now I think it was probably mostly jetlag)

Thanks hon. So nice to hear 1 of these travel bloggers actually NOT recommend alcohol for flying. Not only for the points you've mentioned but also because it increases your chances of developing a deep vein clot in flight (which might not sound bad but is actually is quite dangerous - clot moves to your heart=heart attack, moves to your head=stroke, moves to your lungs you could stop breathing). Same goes for smoking (more reasons to quit ppl)

Actually I thought it was interesting what she said about skipping that high carb meal before touchdown. I read an article fairly recently that referenced a couple of studies suggesting you should just fast for the whole flight - don't eat, try to sleep as much as possible and drink plenty of water. Supposed to really help stave off jetlag. I've recently (over past year or so) gotten into fasting and am finding it very beneficial for my overall health so I plan to try this for my next long-haul flight (I never eat on shorter flights anyway). I mean it's not like you're missing out on anything - airline food not exactly a gormand experience.

I am not here to offer tips on how to prevent and or cure jetlag. I am here to offer a simple experiment all air travelers can perform before and during your air travels. Get a weight scale that will easily fit in your backpack. Take an inventory of the clothes and accessories youre wearing and weigh yourself at the airport terminal before you board your flight and write what you weighed so you dont forget. After the aircraft gets to its maximum altitude get your scale out and weigh yourself again and write what you weigh at that altitude. The premise or assessment here is that Earth's magnetic field is more dense at ground level and so people and objects weigh more at sea level and weigh less the higher we get because Earth's magnetic field becomes increasingly less dense the further away we get from Earth. So air travelers are experiencing only partial gravitational forces unlike the astronauts who experience zero gravity at the ISS. So i guess you could say air travelers are mini-astronauts or astronauts in training..So partial gravitational forces being experienced by air travelers may be the cause of jetlag.
